First up from the God Machine this week is a look at TV preacher -- and prominent GOP activist -- Pat Robertson, who assured his followers that Republicans would win the White House and Congress in 2012. Robertson knew this with certainty, he said, because God himself told the televangelist what would happen.
This week, Robertson suggested there may have been a divine miscommunication.
For those who can't watch clips online, Robertson conceded, "So many of us miss God. I won't get into great detail about elections but I sure did miss it. I thought I heard from God; I thought I had heard clearly from God. What happened? "You ask God, 'How did I miss it?' Well, we all do and I've had a lot of practice."
The next time Robertson claims to speak for God, and to receive special messages about the future directly from Heaven, the televangelist's followers may want to keep this incident in mind.
Also from the God Machine this week:
* A federal judge reached a tentative ruling this week, blocking officials in Santa Monica, California, from incorporating Nativity scenes in state-sponsored holiday displays this winter. Nativity scenes will, of course, remain legal on private property.
* It took longer than expected, but in Tennessee, the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro opened its doors last weekend. Local anti-Muslim activists had gone to court in the hopes of blocking its construction.
* With Thanksgiving having come and gone, it's time once again for conservatives to complain incessantly about a "war on Christmas."
* Leaders of the Church of England this week rejected an effort to allow women bishops, despite the fact that women already represent a third of the church's clergy, and hold senior positions within the church, including canon and archdeacon.
* And a Florida woman was caught this week going 100 mph in a 30-mph zone, but the motorist defended herself saying she was speeding "because I was letting the Lord spirit guide me." For some reason, that didn't prove persuasive and she was arrested anyway (thanks to R.P for the tip).

Like many prominent Republicans -- Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh, et al -- Pat Robertson is just a con artist who will say anything that he thinks will cause other people to put money in his pocket. The fools who follow him will learn nothing from his failure at "prediction."
i'm surprised he didn't bring up voter fraud.
i mean, maybe god got it right when he told pat that romney would win.
it's easier for them to believe that President Obama won the election due to voter fraud vs. pat robertson getting it wrong.
pat robertson heard what his self-serving greedy little brain WANTED to hear. his god probably has a strong connection to fux news.
no wonder he got it wrong.
I feel a little bit sorry for Pat. I saw a few of his shows before he went bat-dung crazy and he is not an idiot. I am bothered when somebody lets there own ego destroy their mental capacity.I am bothered more when such people lead others into the fantasy they have built up.
Oh well mankind has always had cults of some kind with varying degree of success. and at times the loons actually hit upon a truth.
Actually Pat got it wrong, and when he continued to use God's name to convey an incorrect message, God sent Hurricane Sandy just to get everyone's attention. I mean, after all, in some GOP corners, isn't Sandy given credit for costing Romney the election?
(s/o)
(Okay, the above goes way beyond good taste, but I remember all the claims about God visiting disasters upon us for whatever 'sin' the Republicans think we should be punished for. Then we had the storm that was prayed away from hitting Tampa during the GOP convention. Seems appropriate to bring up Sandy in that context...)
speaking of talking to god and conspiracies .You all have probably seen this vid. It would never be taken seriously by the MSM , but I hope the meme propagates. When our elections are turned over to computers , you know they can be hacked. Just passing this on in case . Normally I don't buy into them but this one made me take pause. I would love to be able to verify the events of 2004 in Ohio.
As with all the rest of the fundamentalist scum, Robertson is guilty of the Sin of Hubris, that he presumes he can speak to God. They'll all have a very interesting experience when they get to find out if there is indeed an afterlife, and what their position in it will be as a result of the choices they made in life.
I'm reminded of one of the Twilight Zone episodes written by Earl Hamner, Jr. (later creator of "The Waltons"), in which an old man wakes up in a forest with his old dog he was looking for. He finally understands that he and the dog died when they went into the freezing river. and this is the afterlife They walk along and come to a big beautiful gate, with beauitiful grounds and buildings beyond. The property owner is at the gate, a friendly glad-handing guy who is just happy as can be to invite the old man inside. But when the man asks if his dog can come along, the man tells him they don't allow "dirty animals" in. The old man allows as how he'd prefer to stay with his friend and heads on, with the property owner telling him "you'll be sorry!" Further down the road he finds an old broken down wooden gate. The property beyond is overgrown, and the buildings are tumble-down. The owner comes to the gate, an older gent, and he too is friendly. He invites both man and dog inside. As they go in, the old man comments about the place up the road not letting his dog inside. To which the older gent replies, "Of course, that's hell. What self-respecting dog would like that place? He's (the devil) always doing something to impress people with what's there, so long as they don't ask too many of the wrong kind of questions."
Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggart, Newt Gingrich, and all the rest of them would have had no problem choosing the right place, since it looked just like where people of "their sort" belonged. Which is true.
Of course, Maddow must not have actually READ the story of Santa Monica - what the judge DID was to dismiss the lawsuit brought by CHURCHES to REVERSE Santa Monica decision (made by the city) THAT NO RELIGIOUS DISPLAYS WOULD BE ALLOWED ON CITY PARKLAND.
Nailed it! This is a charlatan of the highest order, right up there next to Gawd..
God has a lot more going on than Mitt Romney or Pat Roberson, even if they happen to think different. Real equality escapes them, especially regarding their own equality in comparison to the poorest person on Earth... Had he been correct (just about a 50-50 shot in most GOP thinking, except, of course, Mitt Romney was never ever mathematically ahead, or able to be, for even a single second, despite wishful thinking) we never would have heard the end of how connected Pat is.
@put a fork in it, you are correct. The city's second decision was to forgo inclusive Christmas/holiday scenes on public property to avoid the property damage and unrest it created last couple years.
Initially, I thought the Santa Monica officials handled the complaint by atheist Damon Vix a few years ago well. They offered a real solution. They offered the public lot applications for Christmas/holiday scenes, hoping to be culturally inclusive of their population diversity and what the season means them.
However, the compaintant Vix campaigned for atheists applicant flood for the lots, with atheists winning a vast majority (18 of 21?), only for some to use their lots for religious belittlement. So, in effect, the lots were no longer about what the holiday season means to a diverse people, but rather the right to show contempt for the holiday and others' beliefs in a public sphere. Just another case of the attitudes of a few ruining it for everyone.
Anyway... it was a good try Santa Monica.
--------
=/ I've spent much of my adult life ignoring or pretending Pat Robertson was obsolete by order of what he says. And still, I can't seem to shake him.
Lockinpost, I wonder if Damon Vix does any Christmas shopping? Does he stand in line on Gray Thursday to get the right CHRISTmas gifts?
Candace, why would it matter if he did? Do you honestly think that taking part in the second biggest retailer shopping drive in the entire calendar year (after Black Friday of course) negates a personal non-belief in a god?
Do you really believe that CHRISTmas has anything to do with an actual belief in Christ? It's long since lost any religious overtones to millions of people and I'm not even counting those to whom Christmas has NEVER had a connection to Christ or god or religion. I grew up with a kid who was a forced Jehovah's Witness and his misery over the holiday had nothing to do with missing out on a religious holiday but in all the good new stuff the rest of us got.
Do you recognize that beyond insulting atheists you're also insulting Jehovah's Witness', Jews, Muslims (though, I'm guessing you don't care so much about that), Hindu's, Buddhists, Native Americans ... any adherent to any religion that doesn't equate CHRIST with their god who also buys gifts at Christmas? Or do you just not care?
I so wanted Pres. Obama to win again that I prayed to my God for a win & that She protect our country from the RWNJs. My prayers were answered at 10:12 pm on 11/6/2012, when Rachel Maddow announced Ohio was awarded to POTUS assuring him of the 2012 win. My God answered my prayers. Perhaps She gets so few from me, praying only when it is very necessary that She listened and agreed that my prayers should be answered. If Pat Robertson or the other right leaning ministers would actually follow the teachings of Jesus, perhaps they would have been praying for an Obama win.

God sure is needy. Just can't seem to get what He wants and as George Carlin said"... has a lot of trouble with money...just can't seem to handle it properly...or get enough of it..." And that's when Pat steps in huh. Desperate people looking for somebody to save 'em...many indoctrinated from birth.
Why would anyone believe God would speak to the likes of Pat Robertson (was spelled Robber-son) and what kind of God would do so?
@Candice, If you're asking if I think Mr Vix participates in the commercialization of the Christmas holidays, I'd say it's probable. Most people do engage in gift giving as part of their season celebrations. I do. Though I avoid the holiday shopping rushes because I prefer to make the gift seeking part of positive holiday experience.
@tune. The most substantive part of that video was the misplaced anger issues that chap has. I try never to argue with one that angry, one so consumed with denigrating a class of people during the holidays as to be impervious to the concept of "good will toward men" for everybody of every non/faith.
The vandalism didn't surprise me. It is not unusual. Too often unattended public displays suffer from opportunistic vandals. We just don't hear about it. But it is also possible some were angered by the ill will of the atheist displays and retaliated. And that is unacceptable.
I was actually more concerned with the damage to public property.
I thought I would share it because people were discussing the situation. I was mostly referring to his information about the circumstances. He explained that the issue of the city wasn't religion, but that displays were getting vandalized. I thought he gave some good commentary, but I can understand your position as well. I respect that.
On a side issue: on another post you had warned me about how my central view point was clashing with another blogger here and his particular view point as a Native American and his own religion. At the time I wrote you off, but after having a second exchange with him it became very clear to me that even when I was defending him he seemed to interpret my statements as hostile. So to you I owe an apology for my more flippant treatment. The next time you see something like that try to explain to me exactly how I am miscommunicating because the first time I do not think I understood you. I believe that you are correct, but that perhaps next time you can point to the specific statements I'm making that are coming across in ways that I'm not intending. Anyways it's a point in your corner and I was hoping I'd see you post again so I could formally apologize.
Hello Cartoonthenews, Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving. Very few posting tonight.
I can accept that Pat Robertson and many others believe that God talks to them. What I find really interesting is that whenever God talks directly to someone, God only ever tells them things that they already believe.
Heya India- how've you been? Hope your turkey day was good!
People who believe I talk to them are nucking futs.....God
@Haddie nuff : iif you believe your post went beyond good taste , then your parents did too good a job bringing you up; you shouldn't be looking at the internet ! :-). Seriously, if we could imagine a shift in the storm's track such that the weather suppressed voting in Democratic precincts in VA, PA, OH etc so that Romney had won, does anyone doubt that Robertson, Romney, and the whole of the religious right wouldn't have declared Sandy to be Divine intervention ? Forget the elecorate, Romney, Ryan, and Boehner would have annointed themselves with manifest destiny, 21st century style.
toon, no apology warranted. I was difficult to understand because my posts were riddled with emotion.
RE Santa Monica: That chap did have something valid to say. But he reinforced all that is viewed negatively about atheists. I am discouraged that the identity and mission of most atheist organizations is strictly based on assailing religions and those who hold a faith; which, ironically, means they are nothing in the absence of religion.
That Santa Monica thing held great promise for breaking barriers to community unity. It was a chance for atheists, as well as minority faiths, to participate together and share positive messages for the season. But... that is not the route some atheists took. They went negative; a bitter failure primarily because it was a lost opportunity.
I'm sure most atheists do not view it as a failure for their "all or nothing". They view it as a success. This confounds me.
Atheists don't give a rip if you want to stand on the corner and spout religious beliefs. Put up a billboard, if you want. We don't care if you say a silent prayer before class or before a public meeting. We're not trying to stop you from being religious. It's when you start to try to force that stuff down our throats that we object.
And rightly so. The very first amendment to the constitution supports us. Want to have a religious display on public property, property owned by all of us? Not legal. But if it's going to happen because people are stupid, you better make space for mine, too. It's OUR land, not yours. There's plenty of private property to display such things. Why do Christians feel the need to use OUR common lands to promote THEIR, and ONLY their, beliefs?
Paul, do you have any idea what my belief system is? If not, then I suck at forcing it on you.
Pat Robertson feels he didn't hear what God was telling him. If election results reflect God's will, one might interpret that GOD VOTED FOR OBAMA. It will be a challenge for Mr. Robertson to talk his way out of that one.
i diagree god wants all of us to vote in our morals that are closely to the bible . the first one that comes to mind is ( thou shall not kill) . homosexual lifestyle is a sin and will not go to heaven . dont belive me ok it is the bible . pls read it could really help you .
Go back to wackworld and pee on the fire hydrants there. You're too stupid to even be able to write right, you moron.
Are the words in red in the bible included in the ones you think people should use as a guide in voting, or just randomly cherrypicked excepts from Leviticus that make you feel superior to other human beings / voters / tax payers.
HALFbaked? Live by your buy-bull if you wish. I find it merely a collection of anecdotes written down by a bunch of ill-informed bronze age FOOLS
Yeah, lawbaker? Your demure yet under-educated opinion is the only sin on this thread. Well, maybe I'm wrong... I haven't read the entire thread yet! Certainly, you have a superior sense of sentence construction and punctuation. Oh yeah, and go @!$%# yourself with the good book!
I find it very interesting that normal people don't need to be told what moral behavior is like. They instinctively know that all morality is treating other people as you would want to be treated if you were in their position. But then there are individuals like lawbreaker who needs to have things spelled out for them and aren't capable of figuring out things for themselves.
Something to ponder on this Saturday after Thanksgiving: Those who write with care and correctness can notice when others don't. It's kind of abrasive when errors are pointed out.
My favorite author is Richard Mitchell, who wrote several books and authored a monthly collection of essays called The Underground Grammarian. He says that writing isn't for saying what you think, it's for making what you think. Because whether it's a grocery list or The Brothers Karamasov, it's a permanent record, such that you can go back and see where you've been foolish and change it. I hope to see more thoughtful posts here, ala RM.
@ lawbaker - Based on morals, President Obama IS the right choice. Romney has none. Oh, and btw, being homosexual isn't a sin, unless God created sin.
@lawbreaker
Homosexuality is no more a sin than fornication and, according to Leviticus, eating shellfish. None of these sins, however made it to the top ten like adultery.
Where's the push for constitutional amendments against these sins? Or does the need for legislating against sin only arise when you personally find them repugnant?
@lawbreaker interesting name for yourself.
If I am to vote according to my morals, then my morals dictate that marriage should be for all, equally, that all humans are created equal, that there should be no religious test to hold office, that all humans should be able to make critical decisions about their bodies, their health and their reproduction, that destruction of the environment to satisfy consumers is wrong, and that the gross inequality of income and wealth in the western world is a social evil that is killing the soul of America.
Not everyone is a christian, America is a nation of immigrants from diverse backgrounds, and no one group, by which I mean you, has a right to dictate the behaviour and rights of the whole based on your specific religious doctrine. That is the meaning of the constitution, that is the principal upon which America was founded.
Neuroscience tells us that free will is as much a myth as God is. So did "free will" really tell us how to vote? When Union workers listened to their Free Will and voted for Reagan, did they hear "Free Will" wrongly? Or are we participating in a collective delusion call the religion of Free Will, where the forces really in charge is our tribal affinities, collective narratives as parroted in the media, and the behavioral psychology used by the Obama for America campaign.
Maybe the idea that we drive our bodies around and are the prime mover in our affairs is nothing more than a primitive myth.
Not to get all biblical or anything, but divine Law also describes how to deal with those whose prophecies do not take place (e.g. Deut 18:20-22). Go ahead, @lawbaker. We'll wait.
Oh he will manage, none of his chats have ever come to fruition, but he keeps hoping. Wonder why anyone or a Diety would ever bother with him time & again.
I'm with lawbaker, everybody should read the whole bible. There'd be many fewer fundamentalists if that were the case. The bible is the single best piece of atheistic propaganda that there is.
Unlike Pat, I do speak with god and she told me to tell him and his fellow bloviators that she warned you not to take her name in vain and to STFU!
There is an OLD joke, about the test pilot (yes, THAT old!) who flew higher than man had ever gone.
When he returned to earth they asked what was up there.
"Well," he replied, "I saw God. First of all, She's black. . ."
that one was also attributed to a seance with George Wallace...
Is it just me or does it seem like the people who try yearly turn the holiday season into a political war zone never seem to actually try and celebrate it. To them the season seems to be all about where to put plastic baby Jesus and the placement of the word "Christmas" in advertising rather than the the ideals of "Peace on Earth, and Goodwill toward Men"
Good point. To most of these worshippers of Mammon, how much profit Wal-Mart makes is more important than paying a living wage to their workers.
'Tweren't god..'twas his pollsters that led us unto them dark pastures, and gave us false hope.
Cryin' won't help you. Prayin' won't do you no good.
Actually, I was favorably impressed with Mr. Robertson's humility. I expected that he would explain his false election prediction as God's mistake. Robertson (and God) got the forecast right, but God messed up on the execution.
I think God wanted Romney to win, but couldn't pull it off because Democrats kept driving people to the polls with their chariots of iron.
As a retired medical coder, I often see people's actions in terms of the diagnoses that appear to have caused them....so, FYI, the diagnosis code for a pathological liar is 301.7, and 297.1 is the code for systematized delusions. Not that he's actually being treated for his self-serving delusions...
And FYI, Pat, Jesus was a liberal. Probably even a socialist. Suck on that, Pat.
There is a word that is commonly used to describe people who hear things: crazy.
Re: #7
I totally agree with your last sentence.
I am not a biblical scholar, but I don't think there is anything in the Bible where Jesus talked about maximizing profit. There is no "Thou shalt ask "What's in it for me?"".
BTW - Would Jesus wear a Rolex on His television show?
From Mark 10 (NIV):
The Rich Young Man
17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.’d”
20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”
21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
If everyone gave what they had to someone else and they did the same it may never end...I guess we could just exchange gifts.
Potlatch?
Thank you onlyjoinedforaccess. I was force-fed Pat Robertson as a kid... what I see now is an empty shell of what was once a decent man, pathetically trying to muddle his way through. Reminds me of my mentally afflicted great uncle who used to be a renowned archeologists but spend the final decade of his life with outbursts of firing rifles in the air & covering himself in mud and feces because he thought the Koreans were going to attack.
Yes, Pat. Jesus was a liberal JEW. Deal with it.
BTW - Would Jesus wear a Rolex on His television show?
lol , great post maphi thanx
re: Pat... anyone that claims that they know the mind of God, or has heard directly from him, automatically goes on my ignore list. Whether they are priests, evangelists, politicians, or they saw Jesus in a tortilla.
If you believe in something so strongly that it causes you delusions and/or hallucinations, you are not someone to take seriously.
Why doesn't God get a Twitter account like everyone else?
He doesn't need either, they're too boring and they smell like radioactive waste, smells like cancer. Sorry, cell-phone Zombies, I'd rather skate pools or build a fort in the woods.
He's too busy worrying about the outcome of football games . He's getting a lot of traffic from Alabama and Florida
He does! @TheTweetOfGod
Sick n tired, don't forget Texas. We send Her more pleas for victory in football games than the whole rest of the US put together. Think how many high schools we have and then the two professional teams and then all the college teams. And then consider how a dimwit like Goodhair gets elected by playing the Jeebus card and you get some idea of what She has to put up with. That Dallas just lost to Washington may have been Her statement about being bothered so frequently.
god doesnt tweet because he knows all tweets become the property of twitter and no corporation should own the word of god.
God already has a Facebook account:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/TheGoodLordAbove
He's funny.
what's facebook?
Pat Robertson gives a bad name to hallucinations!
His are daft-laden nincompoop utterances percolating through his pharm-filled brain, out his pie hole and into the airwaves! Where, Americans of confused faith eating canned dog food on the couch in their living rooms, (because they can't afford eating anything else as they've sent all their money to Pat Robertson), are consuming his blasphemous tripe!
And the circle of faith for the weak-minded among us remains unbroken! -Kevo
How could he have heard God, when God is silent. He never talks with words, what Robertson felt was more like, we just don't want to hear other people voice their opinions about all religions,he wants full ownership of God for him and his parishioners only, if you pay him real well, he'll believe just about anything you want him to. I need to know about all religions, so I can 1 by 1 exclude them from my presence. I am of no religious affiliation, and never will be. We don't need to be right we just need to be heard. Church's should be solely and strictly reserved for worshiping our Father and that's all. Now, why should we have to pay for that? Why all these MIddlemen? Ka-ching!
in the latest development concerning the aca's birth control mandate...
A federal judge denied Hobby Lobby's request for an injunction against the Affordable Care Act's contraceptive mandate on Monday, ruling that the arts-and-crafts giant must cover emergency contraceptives in its insurance policies even though it believes the pills cause abortions.
U.S. district judge Joe Heaton rejected both First Amendment and Religious Freedom Restoration Act claims by Hobby Lobby and its well-known evangelical owners, the Green family. Heaton ruled that "secular, for-profit corporations do not have free exercise rights."
"The Greens do have such rights," Heaton's ruling stated, "but are unlikely to prevail as to their constitutional claims because the preventive care coverage regulations ... are neutral laws of general applicability which are rationally related to a legitimate governmental objective."
Hobby Lobby has appealed to the Tenth Circuit for emergency relief.

They're just mad because they can't use children to make money anymore. Were they all on the assumption, that they could adopt these unwanted children and get a kickback from Uncle Sam, when you adopt a dozen of them, lots of free stuff you get when you adopt children. Another scam exposed. They can afford the luxury of a Nanny for their kids, the average Joe or Mary cannot even afford the ones they have. They really need an arithmetic lesson. And a spirituality check-up, it's separate from the body.
Angel#77
i'm not quite sure what you are saying, but i'm an adoptive mother. We didn't get any free stuff. In fact, sometimes I have to remind myself that I did not go through labor.
You're a wonderful human being. I'm talking about people who foster a lot of kids, it helps lower their taxes, they use the children to get money from government programs, that we know nothing about, believe me they have found every loophole there is out there and mastered the art of greed, so well disguised by pretending it is charity work, who do you think was minding the store when Bachman wanted to become President. It's just 1 synopsis, it doesn't pertain to the majority of adoptive parents.
well alrighty then ... and just so you know adoptive is different then foster and not all foster parents abuse the system
i do know you mean no harm, but fact is there are thousands and thousands of children in the us who need, and i mean need, someone to take them home and raise them ... you might consider trying it yourself; these kids can bring you as much joy as "you own"
I would love to adopt, but I would probably not be approved.I'm already expecting a baby in Late June or early July.
I'm sure glenn bleck made similiar pronouncements about how gad was going to vote,, gad shewn upon hym his finger,, afterall..
So how is gleen taking this election?
that "finger" was the MIDDLE one...

Victory in my backyard, Santa Monica. If the right wing had not gone wacko on a god binder the last decade, I doubt this would have been an issue. For my entire life I remember the cheezy series of dolls and stuffed animals put on display with chicken wire and old plywood, and it didn't bother me a bit. Over the last several years people tire of the incessant in-your-face attitude of the religious right, and the pushback is starting.
On an unrelated note: RIP Larry Hagman... We have lost the most approachable and gracious celebrity I have ever seen. This man was simply the people-person of all time, a man who made the day of thousands of us westsiders whenever we were lucky enough to run into him at the market.
I will miss my Master, back to the bottle I go.
Not only was Larry Hagman the exact opposite of J.R. Ewing, he was a good enough actor to be completely convincing in playing The Role Model Of All Republicans to prefection.
This story got interesting last year, in part because it provided a great example of clear skewing of information. Here are two reports from 2011:
First The Blaze! http://www.theblaze.com/stories/calif-atheists-successfully-nudge-out-offensive-nativity-display/
And then, Democratic Underground. http://www.democraticunderground.com/1230416
Take some time with The Blaze, and check out the differences in the photos. TB used source images for the nativity shots, so they're face-on, well-lit and show no cages. Then the same article included as much cage as possible in the atheist TJeff shot. (There's also plenty of skewed wording, but the comparative images are what I'm talking about here.) To contrast Vox's handpainted sign, they even included a detail shot from one of the Nativity scenes, fully-printed.
The first commenter at The Blaze says it all. He remarks on the cage, and even questions the validity of the Jefferson quote. Pictures really do say a thousand words.
Meanwhile, over at the Democratic Underground, there's only one picture - showing what you would see if you walked past the Nativity displays. All three comments discuss the fact that they're not looking too good in their own cages - they don't translate that comment into a question about the validity of Christianity.
I'm truly pleased that the judge didn't allow the nativity. My reason: there are other faiths that are finally feeling they have the ability to demand equal time, and during this high holy time for so many that needs to be honored. This is what the banner said that was torn down by vandals last year:
"At this season of the winter solstice, may reason prevail."
The church group's lawyer has said, "Traditions like the Nativity displays in Palisades Park, religious tolerance and common sense can always look to tomorrow. But, I fear, in my naïve way, not before the gravitational pull of society's regressive 'progressive' movement has tired of battle." I don't think he really understands what "religious tolerance" is. It applies to ALL religions - and the choice to not follow one at all - not just Christianity. It truly is a shame that so many people are so unable to see the world outside their eyes.
R.I.P. Larry Hagman, you wonderful man!
I just saw a sad story about Larry Hagman and how badly he got bilked by the financial industry. Makes me wish he had been a little more like JR:

pew offers up stats on the religious makeup of the next congress.....
Catholics hold just over 30% of the seats, Jews hold 6%, Mormons hold about 3%, and Protestants hold 56%. Roughly seven-in-ten Republicans are Protestants, compared with fewer than half of Democrats.
Protestants, Catholics and Jews each make up a greater percentage of the members of Congress than of all U.S. adults. The same is true for some sub-groups of Protestants, such as Episcopalians and Presbyterians. By contrast, Pentecostals are a much smaller percentage of Congress than of the general public.
Due in part to electoral gains in recent years, Buddhists, Muslims and Hindus now are represented in Congress in closer proportion to their numbers in the U.S. adult population. But some small religious groups, such as Jehovah’s Witnesses, are not represented at all in Congress.
Perhaps the greatest disparity, however, is between the percentage of U.S. adults and the percentage of members of Congress who do not identify with any particular religion.

reuters reports that south carolina has seceeded again...
A majority of parishes in the conservative Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina voted last Saturday to leave the U.S. Episcopal Church over disagreements on issues including the national church's ordination of gay clergy and acceptance of same-sex unions.
The vote at a convention in Charleston followed the U.S. Episcopal Church's certification last month that South Carolina Bishop Mark J. Lawrence had abandoned the church's doctrine, discipline and worship.
Steve Skardon, a member of a Charleston church that, contrary to the action of its statewide branch, plans to remain in the national church, said of the majority: "They want to tell gay people they're wrong."

Now they can go back to preaching that slavery is ordained of God. Further proof that James Pettigrew was right in 1861 when, upon hearing of the vote for secession, he said "South Carolina is too small for a Republic and too large for an insane asylum."
TC in LA, I love that expression. So true!
I am a great advocate of the southern red states leaving the union. I would help them pack their moon pies.
I am sick of their illiterate BS, their racism, their fundamentalism, and their rabid political ignorance. I don't even like their accent.
Goodby, I say.
i wonder if in moments of silent reflection whether robertson and those like him who got their messages from the almighty mis-deciphered, ever consider that they've also blown it as to the mind of god on other matters such as gay rights, religious tolerance, and the right of a woman to exercise sovereignty over her own body?
jim filyaw: let me put your wondering mind to rest. the short answer is NO!
Pat should stop and look around to realize he's been missing God for years now. He just made up for God's absence with his own ego.
and some fairly big catholic news i'm a little late on......
On November 12th Australia's prime minister ordered a federal inquiry into allegations of child sex abuse in state and religious institutions and community groups following a string of sexual abuse accusations against priests and claims of a Catholic Church cover-up.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard had faced mounting pressure to order a wide-ranging investigation after the New South Wales state premier last week ordered an inquiry into allegations of a sexual abuse cover-up by Catholic priests in the Hunter Valley region north of Sydney. Victorian officials are also investigating a separate series of priest sex abuse allegations in their state.

Hopefully, these sick people will leave the Catholic church. I think these horrible men are starting to be exposed for what they truly are, perverted pedophiles. They hide as coaches, priests, teachers, and even Santa's helpers, (watch when placing a child on one of their knees.) There are some seriously scarry looking Santa's out there. The ice cream man is another one to watch out for, steer clearly away from white vans. Eventually we will catch them all.
God & I used to have regular conversations with each other. However, I had to stop admitting this after spending time in a looney bin. If only I was a televangelist, I would not have to deny this.
You could have made a nice fortune, if you had played it right!
God isn't what he used to be.... First Rick Perry now Robertson, perhaps he inhaled too much smoke from the burning bush!
if god's a sports fan, he must have loved this...
earlier this week the faith baptist bible school basketball team played grinnell college [who was running a gimmick offense] and watched grinnell's jack taylor put up a college record shattering 138 points...
"Before his squad took the floor Tuesday night, Taylor met with a few teammates for a pregame devotional. It was the first time that Taylor, a sophomore at the Division III school, had ever read Bible verses with other players prior to tipoff.
They focused on Matthew 25, a chapter that features a parable about the value of talents.
'I gotta thank the man upstairs,' Taylor said. 'I was able to multiply my talents tonight.' "

Too bad all the out-of-joint evangelical fundies don't give a chit about the war on Thanksgiving with people rushing out after they eat to save a couple of bucks and fight with other people. Funny how there's no outrage about that war.
INDEED!
