Just my opinion :
Traditional America is disappearing ? Really ? You mean this Traditional America ?
The Traditional America that was populated by American Indians ( before Europeans got here ) who have been fighting racism and genocide for hundreds of years ?
The Traditional America where African Americans, who were brought here against their will, have been fighting racism and genocide for two hundred years or more ?
The Traditional America where women have been fighting against women-haters and fighting for their civil rights for over a hundred years ?
The Traditional America where the LGBT community has had to hide behind the scenes in Churches, Politics, Education, and Society until recent history in this country ?
These are all traditional groups of people here in America and they have been a part of America since its inception.
The only thing that is actually disappearing in America is the tradition of oppressing people who do not look, think or act like radical Right-Wingers and their tradition of lying about engaging in this kind of hate.
Wake up and smell the truth AND the voting Right Wing America . . .
The only ' Traditions ' disappearing in America are those of Radical, Right-Wing, Racist, Homophobic, Women-Hating, Religious Fanatics who use God as a weapon and Jesus as a mascot.
The REAL Traditional America that has always been here will continue to survive and thrive !!
Republicans are intent on blocking and obstructing the senate, and if anyone attempts to prevent them from blocking and obstructing the senate they will have no other choice than to block and obstruct the senate.
When are you people going to realize that Rachel Maddow talks to you like a preacher or a teacher as if we don't understand the point she is trying to get across? She talks to you like you people are a bunch of dummys. Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot she is talking to DEMOCRATS ! DUH !!!!!!
Your attempt at shaming is like pouring water through a sieve. Liberals don't have a problem with learning new concepts and norms. It's definitional. This is why libertarian laissez-faire types were called liberals(now classical liberals) in the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The rise of the merchant class and the destabilization of the gentry was not fitting with 18th century norms. Those liberals won and became the conservatives of the late 19th Century into the 20th.
Your attempt at shaming is like pouring water through a sieve.
I can't believe that Maddow preaches and talks to you people like you are a bunch of morons. And, no one ever complains about her. She is always treating people like they don't understand anything....When are you Democrats going to wake up and see the truth ? Oops, i didn't mean to be racist !!!!!!
One doesn't "mean to be racist"... they just are. As to the remainder of your comment, it's time for your medication. You are obviously ranting codswallop with not a hint of reality.
I hope that when it's time for Governors elections come up for the Republican ones gets those same Governors out of office if the states that they are in really want to get anything meaningful done in those states. Those same Governors tried to suppress the vote in their states and are still trying to do so. They are trying to de-fund planned parenthood by still stating that women should not have the right to be able to get Birth Control without some idiotic man allowing them to do so. I'd like to know how many of those same guys have ever been raped or gotten pregnant. I'd like to see if they have both genetalia that even gives them a clue on what most women would really like to do with their lives besides be some man's slave and not think for themselves. They don't want their churches to be taxed, but they keep on involving religion in politics. What happened to Separation of Church and State? If we want to really be a country that is strong, then we have to stand up to these people who seek to make women second class citizens, keep minorities who are also citizens from voting, and seek to keep all of us who haven't stolen others livlihoods away from them in a poverty state and don't want any of the working class to be able to retire so that they can steal our Social Security funds and use it to pay for their mistresses and illegitimate children to live on.
Brilliant, love the show.
Lets look at gerrymandering. There is no way to gerrymander the U. S. senate. The state lines are fixed. But, the house is different. At some time in the next 2 years the house districts need to be analyized by the Democratic National Committee. Someone like Nate Silver needs to be put to work.
Lets briefly review what we are pretty sure of. We know that 22 states have republican governors and legislatures. Two years ago we did a census and house districts were open to revision. We know not many were revised. But the capacity to revise has been there every 10 years. How many districts have been gerrymandered?
The senate is slightly democratic. It can't have been gerrymandered. The house is slightly republican. Every seat could have been gerrymandered. The question is "How many have been gerrymandered?" I think it should be independently investigated.
I am watching your "Burn Notice". The most important thing in the next 4 years is the filibuster rule. Ignore Coburn. Obama should have nothing else on his platter. It is the only way his next 2 and perhaps 4 years can amount to anything. In this case the senate can pass Obama's ideal legislation and some of it must survive conference. If enough does he can sign it. If not he must veto.
The show smart , informative and funny (the Republicans).
When are you people going to realize that this woman is nothing but a preacher and a teacher and she thinks we are all fools. She talks like we are all stupid AND she has NOTHING to report !!!!!! She needs to go back to where she came from and hopefully not teaching our children!!!!! Maybe the Democrats are so dumb ,they need someone like her because they can't understand the real truth ?
I think you kind of outed yourself by posting your reply three times... Did you learn the tactic in remedial classes while you were growing up? I did myself in language classes, but without "immersion" in an environment where one tongue is spoken exclusively, I don't see an alternative.
BTW, I'm a former teacher, and yes I find it a bit irritating the way Rachel dots every i and crosses every t, but then I realize there are people who need it...
Some like you, however, don't realize it, and worse, you never learned that the sort of process comments you engage in are considered rude in many social circles.
Rachel Maddow....You are poor excuse for a woman ( or a man ?) And, you are a poor excuse for a reporter, teacher, person, etc. !!!!!
Mesababy, you are going to learn very shortly that personal attacks, particularly on the hosts, are not welcome at Newsvine.
Mr. Emerson is correct regarding the filibuster rule; as you pointed out in your show, no governing is getting done. The term "lawmakers" now borders on a joke. What is really important is for people to realize that rule by "super-majority" is actually minority rule. We as a country are held captive by a minority of those lawmakers who need only be 41% to stop any law no matter what the will of the numeric majority or "the governed" may be. This is simple arithmetic, people--41% of our "lawmakers" are determining what does not become law, which is the same as determining what the law is. That is minority rule. We are so proud of our "democracy" when in fact what we have is tyranny of the minority.
Rachel Maddow is my absolutely favorite person on television. She is bright, funny, fantastically intelligent, and a miraculous antidote to news shows that favor the right wing point of view. I can not think of a stronger or more beautiful role model for women (and men) in this country. Thank you, Rachel, for being such a magnificent soul! You bring great joy to your viewers! I love Chris Matthews, too, as I am in total agreement with everything I have ever heard him say. Thank you, both!
trolls are embarrassingly dumb... kind of hilarious. they don't REALIZE that this particular audience is so far out of their league
The President should do well in his second term as long as he pursues issues that he ran on, because, that is why he was reelected. I don't think FDR ran on amending the Constitution to expand the Supreme Court. I know Reagan didn't say anything about fighting a proxy war in Nicaragua. And, for damn sure George Dubya never mentioned anything about privatizing Social Security, at least, I didn't hear it. I was still looking for all those mushroom clouds/smoking guns. LBJ's is the saddest case. His only elected term was ruined by bad advisers, even though he had passed the most significant legislation since Lincoln and FDR.
Just so you know, there is nothing in the Constitution that says we must have 9 Justices on the Supreme Court. All it says is that: Congress sets the number of federal Justices, the President gets to appoint them, the Senate confirms them as fit to serve, and the term is life, resignation, or impeachment and conviction(removal?). The number has been 6, 7, 9, 10, 8, and 9. When circuit courts were set up with their own judges right after the Civil War, Congress set the number at nine where it's remained. Roosevelt proposed a bill that would have let the number float up to 15 as the justices aged. For each justice over the age of 70 1/2 years, the President would get another pick. To allow the old codgers a break in their duties, y'see. No Constitution juggling needed, just a Congress willing to break with tradition.
@mesababy: If you would like to have your comments taken seriously, you might want to consider something other than ad hominem attacks. We suggest that you look up "logical fallacies" so that you do not make similar mistakes in the future and can present a tenable argument.
You apparently have some problem with a program that aims to be informative and fact-based in regard to politics. You probably find this post offensive, since I have taken the liberty of trying to impart some small amount of wisdom. If you are not willing to learn or you resent those who try to inform you, just walk away. You do yourself no service with posts that are meant to be unflattering to others but instead paint you in a negative light.
RE: Filibuster.
The last actual filibuster that I can recall occurred in 2005, when then first term Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) opposing the DOD Appropriations because it contained language giving the DOE authority to "fill and caulk" three radioactive dump sites, including Hanford, WA, and therein removing them from Superfund, held the floor for hours and refused to give it up regardless of immense pressure from both sides of the aisle, include Sen. Harry Reid who was obviously livid because of his stance on Yucca Mountain which at that time its use hadn't been determined. It was a true "Mr. Smith" moment and because of that incredible act of courage Senator Cantwell became a heroine in my eyes.
I may have picked the wrong thread to leave this post but here goes.
Can we have a serious discussion about online voting? With all the Republican attempts to suppress voting and subsequent long lines, even with early voting, wouldn't it be much more convenient if we could vote by computer or smart phone. I have written on Huffington Post several times and gotten push back. It seems to me that if banks can solve the security issues and Facebook has solved the volume issues of a billion users, our government can make this available as a Plan B. Plan A is to keep the voting booth open for those who don't trust pure electronic means. Yes, there would be problems to overcome. One of those is that it may compromise the "secret ballot compact."
In Presidential elections every four years, it is higher turnout. In between, like 2010 when Republicans won because they turned out and Democrats did not, low voter turnout is in the rural favor. If we had people voting from their iPhones and Blackberries, these mobile voters would take the time to turn the red tide blue.
