With congressional Republicans and President Obama nowhere near one another when it comes to the ongoing fiscal talks, the likelihood of failure at the end of the month is quite high. Who would the American mainstream hold responsible for the mess? According a new Washington Post-Pew Research Center poll, it's not a close call.

By a nearly two-to-one margin, Americans would blame GOP lawmakers for the failure to reach a bipartisan agreement. Though it's common for many to reflexively blame "both sides" for every political misstep, in this poll, only about one in 10 people would hold both Republicans and the president responsible.
What's more, these perceptions seem pretty stable -- a similar poll was conducted three weeks ago, and the results were largely identical.
The question is whether any of this will have a practical effect.
Chris Cillizza reported, "Republicans are well aware of where the public seems ready to put the blame if no deal on the cliff is reached. It's why House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) offered a counterproposal Monday to the one President Obama laid out last week. Simply letting stalemate stand for the next 10 to 14 days is unacceptable to Republicans who know they have to do everything they can to avoid the cliff -- and the blame for it that seems likely headed their way."
In recent years, GOP officials have generally ignored public pressure, but it's worth keeping in mind that both Obama and Republican leaders have made an effort to persuade the public, and at this point, only one of those sides is winning.
There's obviously an enormous amount of time before the 2014 midterms, at which point lawmakers will face the public's judgment, but between now and then, how eager are congressional Republicans to explain why they decided, on purpose, to shrink middle-class workers' paychecks, not just through income taxes, but also through payroll taxes?

Yeah, their internal polling must be reflecting poorly on them, but all our House Republicans need to look at is the fate of three companies that have publicly disrespected the vote of the people:
Applebee's, Papa Johns, and Denny's have paid the price already for meddling in politics not popular with us, the American voters! Take heed o'Teapartyers! -Kevo
It's not that simple. Congress is a hydra with lots of heads you can't just attack it as one thing and they know it. Thanks to redistricting most of the GOP house is safe in their districts and likely to stay that way for a while. The only real pressure they will likely face is the threat from Grover Norquist and the Tea party of being attacked from the right in their primaries.
They can afford to piss off the american public at large as long as they can keep 50.1% of their district happy.
What Dragoon said. And Republicans won't hear about this poll unless it makes it onto Fox. Their bubble remains intact.
Plus the fact that they are responding to their base , you know the ones that ponied up a Billion dollars ....there are payoffs to be made . We paid for legislation favorable to us and god damn it we want it .
here's the top ten
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0812/79413.html
The people being protected from paying more tax....
Yes, and all of them see results every day when the till is counted, every week when they make payroll, and every quarter when they report earnings.
The House Republicans won't be held accountable until November 2014 at the soonest, and in districts like mine (Schweikert) they're guaranteed re-election until the next redistricting: 2022. The only things that matters for the next ten years are:
Let 'em go over the cliff. After they've fallen down it will be easier to kick them repeatedly.
it looks like President Obama has them by the short hairs.
hope it works.
i guess we'll find out.
And the 20-25% who would blame President Obama are, very likely, from the same small Faux news crowd who subsists on rumors of Kenyan Socialism and other evils and would always blame Obama, no matter the circumstances
And NOT the failure his four years have been?
On the contrary Scotty, despite unprecedented obstruction by the GOP, President Obama's 1st term was very successful. And I look forward to the next 4 years of continued success.
You remind me those WWII Japanese soldiers who refused to believe that the emperor surrendered and continued to fight in the jungles of east Asia for decades after the war had ended.
You people just don't get it. But, just as it happened to those Japanese soldiers, it shall happen to you and your kind - time and progress will sweep you all into the dustbin of history.
Sadly, this will all be forgotten in 2014. The Republicans will likely sail through reelection and continue to screw over the middle class.
Explain how the rich "screw over" the poor and middle class. Do they take things from them? Do they steal from them? Do they pay the lion's share of the taxes so that the poor get their entitlements? Do they pay for most of the infrastructure in this country although according to dem talking points, they only use about 1-2%. (Remember, the rich are only the upper 1-2%.) Without the rich, who will pay the bills? Dems sure want all the freebies handed down and want to make sure that the rich are paying even a bigger chunk than they are now. I don't see how the middle class is getting screwed over.
Here's an example how the rich screw the middle class: Hostess execs awarded themselves massive bonuses despite running the business into debt, cut the workers pay, then they raid the workers pensions to the tune of over 180 million, then declare bankruptcy so they don't have to pay the pension back, then decide to liquidate the company because the workers went on strike because they got screwed over. Then to top it off, the execs are getting another big bonus.
And that's just one example out of many.
Do you think it's fair that a billionaire pays much less in taxes than his secretary? If you do, then you're an a$$hole
How much money does the Walton family make in profits? How much do average taxpayers have to pay in welfare subsidies to help Wal-Mart employees who do not make enough to live on, cannot get full-time work or medical benefits?
How much money is getting taken out of a small community like mine in Southwest Colorado and sent to Arkansas to support the Waltons in their no doubt lavish life style. (And don't tell me not to shop at Wal-Mart. It is fifty miles to the next town and they just have a bigger Wal-Mart.)
The wooden toy soldiers. Rove,Nordquist, and Koch, maybe Trump, Crazy Right extremists, the list goes on and on and on, And you'll tell 2 friends, and it goes on and on. Group paranoia, social disorder. Insanity, you name it, The Blame game, The Right has no idea what the left are doing. They can only see themselves in that mirror. Fear is probably to blame.Rumpa bum bum, me and my drum. Come shake my hand, let us begin.December presents are coming early.
Why would you think conservatives wouldn't press on, when all you have to say is "Gimmee!"?
Here you are demonizing fiscal conservatism because it believes debt have to paid. Apparently the left doesn't believe debt has to be repaid. Who here is really on board with taking other people's money with the intention of never paying it back. I'd be interested to know.
Blanks - Fiscal Conservatives don't believe in Fiscal Conservativism with regards to the top earners. It's all 'give us money, screw the poor.'
The top earners pay most of the income tax, what else do you want?
And no, nobody gives the rich money, and no, nobody takes it away from the poor.
C'mon, people. Ignore hemorrhoids.
All this hemorrhoid is is the equivalent of the kooks on the street wearing "The World Is Ending" sandwich boards. Do you stop and chat with people that do that? That's all this guy is.
Look, the hemorrhoids needs your attention as oxygen to remain relevant (even in their own minds). Don't give it to them. He even told people on this board he was going away till after Christmas because he couldn't deal with the post-victory stuff. But he was back 10 minutes later. He NEEDS your attention, and without it he shrivels.
These buffoons die from parental neglect when you pay them no mind.
Whatever you say......son.
Sorry DWIA. I need to learn to ignore Blanks.
it believes debt have to paid.
By cutting taxes even more , LMAO ...AndI pay twice the rate of romneys 11% , more falsehoods from the gop

What? This fact free, intelligence free, lowest common denominator, reference to anal medication, is your version of pithy repartee, or devastating counterpoint?
Or perhaps you've had you head up your posterior for so long, your world view has shrunk to seeking relief for painful itching?
More likely, you're a HS dropout taking a break from the grill at Hardee's and are taking a stab at other people liking you - if you're just vile enough to impress them.

Your posts are "talking points" with no backing in reality, yet we're supposed to take you seriously? Your posts are one long insult - to our intelligence!
Must really p*ss you off your guy didn't win!
Good.
The chart is encouraging, but bear in mind that Republicans next year will have 55% of the Reps in the House, yet only got 49% of the total votes for that chamber. During the run up to this last election, it was obvious that the GOP was primarily responsible for congressional gridlock - and I wouldn't doubt that public opinion was pretty much the same then as this chart says it is now. While this may have paid off in terms of total votes, it had little effect on the GOP's strangle hold on the House. What's important to a GOP member of the House is not what the majority of voters think, but what the majority of Republicans in THEIR district think. And, based on the election results, overall, these more narrowly defined groups in red districts weren't unhappy enough to switch and vote Democratic.
And in other news we see once again the typical right wing accusation that everyone does what they do. Reality is only right wing sources repeat that lie when in fact it has been shown that when Obama agreed to do things the GOP wanted to do and all of a sudden the GOP were against those things that they wanted. You know like their loser candidate who was against everything he was for.
I am shocked by the polling numbers...I wonder how they would look if Mr Boehner was out campaigning like President Obama versus being in Washington doing his job?
If the Obama supporters believe that he has a mandate, I would suggest to the President, stop campaigning, go back to Washington, and sign a bill.
Thankfully, the forefathers made this government a democratic republic not a democracy, where the majority rules. The President understands constitutional law and that he needs the congress, a GOP majority, to help him with his "mandate."
YAAAAAAAAAAAAA They're breeding.....the name and 7 number trolls. Like friggin zombies I tell you , like friggin zombies.
Maybe it's their troll camp ID number
What? You mean people would ACTUALLY have the nerve NOT to roll over for Bammy? And after he's been SO SUCCESSFUL on the economy....LOL
stick-n-effin-tired,
Let me understand this...having a "cute" blog name makes you more credible?
Wow! Try to respond to my posting in mature way or is it you do not have a response because you agree with me?
Obama has met with repubs over and over again...remember the debt ceiling negotiations that Cantor and Boehner walked out of last year? As for "campaigning"...it's called the bully pulpit. If you object to the president going out and talking to people to convince them to pressure congress to pass his bills, then you must have been apoplectic when Bush was doing the same thing in order to sell his idea to privatize social security. Boehner is welcome to do the same thing...if he can stay sober long enough to keep from falling off the podium.
Bob M ....just look through the trollery on this site Those who repeat faux talking points for entertainment
scott-3860658 We suspect you are the same person
Uffdaguy,
When you run out of ideas, refer to Bush or go attack Boehner personally, nice debate strategy.
sick-n-effin-tired,
You got me. I am scott-3860658 and I am troll. Let me guess, you are smarter than trolls?
I'm sure the false-equivalencing MSM will think it's their duty to point out to their foolish reader subjects just how it most certainly would be both sides' fault. Indeed, since Obama certainly knew beforehand how intransigent, stupid, and obnoxious the Republican proposals would be, it should have been incumbent on him to go ahead and be mature about it and assume the position.
Make no mistake about it: the WP, NYT, David Gregory and all the other Serious mediocrities are preparing their arguments to that effect.
You mean BESIDES the "argument" of his four years as an unmitigated failure on the economy that may lead the American people to believe he is raising taxes in the midst of terrible economic times (made worse by HIS policies) all the while American business has came out vehemently against his policies?
What economy are you living in? The one I live in is improving, albeit slowly, under the Obama administration, and is doing so in spite of overwhelming obstructionism on the part of Republicans who didn't care if the economy ever improved as long as they could get rid of the black guy in the White House.
Ignorant Fox-educated wingnuts are just having a hard time dealing with their new found irrelevance.
I laugh at them and fart in their general direction.
(PS: Ignore them, Freddie. That stuff has been discussed ad nauseam everywhere. Somebody that doesn't know it by now will never know it whether it's because they can't understand, they won't understand, or they persist in getting their information from sources whose purpose is to misinform them. These people are simply a waste of time to engage.)
Failure on the economy? You mean the economy which has largely gotten better over the past four years and has crawled out of the worst recession since the Great Depression?
That failure?
I give up.
Does REAL NUMBERS count? Over DOUBLE the number of Americans on food stamps. Yesterday it was announced Manufacturing contracted to it's LOWEST POINT since this failure took office. Welfare rolls at all time highs...Do you just NOT read newspapers so "you don't have to know"? American Business HATES this failure...you people ignore the facts...and to what end? WHY?
YAAAWWWWNNN.
You are one of the more pathetic trolls out there.
Where as you are one of the more blinded Butt smooching followers. Nothing is EVER Hussein's fault...he's ONLY been there 4 years....
Hey everyone check his facebook .
Used to be a hippie but he got better.
I would love to know the source of the dissconnect
And 2014 is going to be a very big year!
Dems like the government to pay for everything. They haven't figured out that it takes money and they obviously think money appears from nowhere. Maybe those Cherry blossoms in DC drop dollars instead of petals in the spring. They see nothing wrong with out of control spending, high taxation and continuing programs that don't work or are bankrupt. Business as usual.
Hey jes33 - Your observation is? Or are you a house painter with the largest brush you can use? Dems? who are the ones you wish to address specifically? They? how many? and just who by name?
You've provided ineffectual sound and fury (muted moans and vanilla ice cream), meaning nothing! -Kevo
What's up yuppies makin' less than 40K?!? Macy's is kickin' off their Fiscal Cliff Sale starting this Friday, and it'll be goin' long and strong for the remainder of this very 2012 year. So, get pumped up and stocked up for the season while you still can afford to do so. Items marked "MY2K," including brand names, Levi's, International Concepts, and select Calvin Klein, will be 50% off until the ball drops! Once it hits rock bottom, sadly, auld middle class fashion shall be forgot, but don't worry, we'll all see each other again this spring at Kohl's or Walmart, expecting great things and of course, lower prices!
Jes33...have you followed the comparison of incomes over the last 30 years between the rich and the middle class? Do you know the distribution of wealth in this country? Do you know the ratio of tax to income paid by the upper quantile vs. the lowest when you figure payroll and other federal and state taxes? If you did, you would not make the statements you made!
Let's see, 42% of the "lower Income" pay NO income tax and the top 5% pay approximately 40%....you were saying?
He was saying...that while GDP continued to grow at a substantial rate between 1973 and today, median individual income has stayed flat (even declined a bit). All this while economic policies brought top marginal tax rates down from 90% to the mid 20% range, trade and tax policies made it acceptable and profitable to off-shore jobs, taxes on capital gains and carried interests were slashed, secure pensions were traded for insecure 401ks, and the banking regulations that kept Wall St. from gambling away those 401ks were repealed (including prohibitions on mortgage-backed securities and the merger of investment and commercial banks). The result of all this was the erosion of a strong middle class. When the 40% you speak of don't pay federal income tax, it's because they don't make enough money, so why not direct your patronizing tone toward their employer (they do pay other taxes, including state and local income taxes, by the way)? Those who work for a paycheck have seen their wages go nowhere while those at the top, who often live off of investment returns and interests, have seen gains of 500% over the past 40 years, mostly due to policies that have redistributed wealth upward. That's what he's saying.
I have come to believe, those who blame the President for all this are the same people who believe and say, Obama was the one who tanked our economy. We should know how the economy got so messed up but it seems twenty five some percent of the people just haven't a clue to what had happened under the Republican watch?
You mean that under GWB the stock market was at 14100, Unemployment at it's lowest level EVER and then Fannie/Freddie crashed the countries economy. Now....WHOSE idea and WHO supported Fannie in unequivocal terms?Take a guess Lupe.
But you don't seem to realized how long those things lasted...it may look good at first, then suddenly it all came falling down. You cannot hang your laurels on a broken hook. Nor can you blame Obama or the democrats for tanking the economy., of which you just did. Who gives a crap about Fannie? I mean all you have is that ONE thing? Because we all know what really happened, except for you and a handfull of Fox news want-a-bees. But we all know what Republicans think of fact check, now don't we?
http://articles.businessinsider.com/2012-01-23/politics/30485008_1_unemployment-rate-obama-election-day
What are you talking about?
President Bill Clinton had 5 months in which he got unemployment below 4%: from September to December of his final term in office unemployment was at 3.9% and briefly in April of 2000 unemployment was at 3.8%. In terms of overall lowest employment number seen during a presidency for any given month that makes Bill Clinton one of only a handful of US presidents to see unemployment drop below 4%. President George W. Bush never achieved a number below 4% during any month he was in office as president. The lowest unemployment number he had was for 4 months- 2 in 2006 and 2 in 2007- in which unemployment got to 4.4%. The overall average of unemployment for President George W. Bush was 5.27% and the overall average of unemployment under Bill Clinton was 5.16%.
Clinton's years in office average unemployment rate by year:
1993- 6.9%
1994- 6.1%
1995- 5.59%
1996- 5.4%
1997- 4.69%
1998- 4.5%
1999- 4.2%
2000- 3.96%
Every year Clinton was in office the unemployment rate average went down to achieve a rate of below 4% (the first time a modern US president dropped the year average unemployment rate below 4%).
Bush years in office average unemployment rate by year:
2001- 4.76%
2002- 5.78%
2003- 5.99%
2004- 5.54%
2005- 5.08%
2006- 4.60%
2007- 4.61%
2008- 5.8%
Under George W. Bush the unemployment rate raised from Clinton's 3.9% year end average and then continued to raise to it's cap of 5.9% in 2003. Then it began going down until 2008 when it began going back up again. Between 2007 and 2008 President George W. Bush achieved over a 1% increase in unemployment making him the only modern president in US history to see unemployment increase at the end of his presidency instead of decrease (even Ronald Reagan saw a decrease, albeit small).
Bill Clinton started with a year average unemployment rate of almost 7% and yet was able to bring that average down below 4%, yet George W. Bush started with a year average unemployment rate of 4.76% and only managed to- in his best year- bring that number down to 4.6%. Total net change between George W. Bush's highest unemployment year average number and lowest unemployment year average number: 1.3%. Total net change between Bill Clinton's highest unemployment year average number and lowest unemployment year average number: 2.94%. Bill Clinton lowered unemployment by almost 3% under his presidency while Bush, given his best numbers, only lowered it by 1.3%.
Source: BLS Labor Force Statistics from Current Population Survey
Also you're bragging because Bush had the stock market at 14100....you do realize that the stock market is at ~13000 now, yeah?
Corporate welfare canceled and rescind Bush Tax cut on top earners to balance budget. Top earners made the decisions to fire workers(ala Bain capital) now on unemployment and food stamp recipients. Not only do they fire just to add $ to their own pockets, but also want workers to starve into virtual slavery for substandard wages, while calling for raiding SS paid by workers. To them, return to $1 per day wages with no SS, medical, or other benefits is the order of the day. Any working person voting republican is against own self interest and USA.
One payment to corporate welfare would pay 1000's of SS. Halliburton no bid contracts alone would have made a big difference to US debt. Lets see how much Mr Dick C takes with him on his ultimate journey.
I have a suggestion as to how the Republicans could keep the tax rates low for the wealthy in a way that would grow the economy and reduce the deficit without hurting the middle class and the poor. Put the minimum wage on the table. Get them to vote for raising the minimum wage to $10.00 immediately and to $15.00 withing two years. That would pump a lot of money into the economy and broaden the tax base. And many of the jobs affected could not be sent overseas because they are mostly the fast food workers and Wal-Mart workers. The Democrats might just go for that compromise.
I have written to just about everyone who works for MSNBC to talk about how much money (unneeded) "tax exemptions" cost us. For some strange reason not one person from any new agency will talk about our nation's need of getting rid of tax exemptions? Why is that? There are so many tax exemptions we could do without. Hundreds of billions of dollors could be used so to lessen our deficit overnight. If we would only get rid of them? Did you know there are tax exemption for nearly 95 percent of all overseas profits we never touch or see being used to help rid us of our deficit? Really; look into it. Please.
balloon-juice pointed out the percentage who will blame Obama is 27%, which makes it a firm floor - the absolute minimum possible are blaming Obama. That's impressive.
Hey Maddow I never would have written anything till I listened to you for a while. Now I have Opinions! http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=2349003120638532906#overviewstats

If Republicans are ignoring the election results, then why does anyone expect them to pay attention to public opinion? They do not care about public opinion because they see it as a minor obstacle to their agenda. Republicans have told so many lies that worked and they believe that opinion can be turned around with more lies. They have not yet figured out that the only people who believe them is their base.
A mess is a mess is a mess, with plenty of blame to go around. Lincoln was blamed for a lot of things which were not entirely his fault either. Of the one who preserved the Union it was being said:
And that was the praise among his friends!

I agree with you 100% Rich, we in the Middle to lower income brackets do pay more, through unemployment and state/local taxes than the upper income groups. We are more aware of it due to our budget constraints. We also contribute more to donations, than ever deduct because they are spontaneous on the most part. Or we cannot deduct them without receipts. We usually give through our pay to non-profits which can be deducted since they are payroll deductions. However we consider them in our weekly budget so we can balance that budget. Paying a gas tax is crazy, since we have to use the car for work, and should see a reduction which would bring gas prices down! Having to pay more than $2.50 a gal is ridiculous. We pay taxes/interest on our vehicle and insurance premiums. That should be enough! These cutbacks should be considered here in NJ since we pay the highest rates in the US!
GOP is under fire on petitions.whitehouse.gov! This is your opportunity to raise your concerns and have the President hear them! I put one on there to cut Congress salary to 100k from 174k and use the money to pay Military and teachers a fair pay/benefits package! No Bills, No Pay! 4 week vacation per year. Stop the Lifetime Pay (which they just got an increase. That's why the Repubs didn't care that they lost all of those seats. They were getting paid anyhow! Hopefully by Dec. 31st I will have 2,500 signatures for the President to sign it into law! Sign and Pass it please! They also have one to impeach the tea-partiers and charge them with Treason against the American People for Obstructing Votes! The Repubs voted down the Disabled Vets bill today for the lame duck session is still in effect? Just Saying they refuse to do anything for even Bob Dole (R) who was a vet and came out of the hospital to advocate for this bill! Let's get rid of them so We can move Forward!
Why the GOP is still so cocky after Nov 2012, and/or the Gop’s secret weapon of stealth.
* They knew that after Romney’s 47% video and that women can block a pregnancy when being raped, they had lost. But they should have lost by much bigger numbers than what resulted. Therefore they still won. Also their final secret weapon is that the lazy opposition will not be voting in the coming mid-terms of 2013, 2014, and 2015. This they are just as certain of as that women enjoy being treated like cattle.
We just need to make certain that their predictions are wrong. GOTV for all elections, local, state and federal. Work on taking back the House in 2014.
