George W. Bush delivers Oval Office address on immigration in May 2006.
Mitt Romney's campaign manager, Matt Rhoades, appeared at a forum yesterday and conceded that he regrets how far to the right Romney went on immigration. At the Harvard University Institute of Politics, Rhoades added that the campaign team adopted an extreme position on immigration to outflank Texas Gov. Rick Perry, but in retrospect, it was unnecessary and ultimately counterproductive.
It's against this backdrop that the last Republican president's remarks seem especially salient.
Former President George W. Bush stressed the importance of immigration on Tuesday at a speech in Dallas, throwing himself back in the ring as the debate over reform heats up in Washington.
"Immigrants come with new skills and new ideas. They fill a critical part in our labor market. They work hard for a better life," Bush said at the event, hosted by the George W. Bush Institute and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
His brief speech introduced the groups' conference, which focused on the need for immigration reform to bolster economic growth. "Not only do immigrants help build our economy, they help invigorate our soul," he said later in the speech.
This, obviously, bears no resemblance to Romney's "self-deportation" rhetoric. It's also a reminder of how and why Bush was able to be vastly more competitive when it came to Latino votes.
Looking ahead, if there's one issue in the next Congress on which we might see some progress, it's immigration. Bush isn't exactly an influential figure anymore, but when reform proponents make their push on Capitol Hill, it probably can't hurt to have the former president helping make the case.

Shorter Rhoades: Romney would say anything to win. Principles were irrelevant.
Shorter Bush: Immigrants work cheaper and are not protected by labor laws. That should be the ultimate principle of the Republican Party.
Tastes bad. More filling. Tastes bad. More filling.
Shorter Rhoades: I hate having to admit I am an incompetent moron, but that's all Republican campaigns hire today, and we mentally-challenged folks should have employment opportunities, shouldn't we?
["Bush isn't exactly an influential figure anymore, but when reform proponents make their push on Capitol Hill, it probably can't hurt to have the former president helping make the case."]
Yes it can. In the larger picture, Bush is hideously unpopular with everybody, including his own party.
The Republicans are not going to give much in the immigration debate because they do not want Obama and the Dems to get credit. If Dems get credit, Republicans fear Hispanics will be lost to the Dems. At best, the Republicans will agree to some tepid bill that does little or nothing.
I get the impression this is all about promoting Jeb.
"Immigrants come with new skills and new ideas"
Ya know what they don't come with? Papers that prove their legitimacy to be here legally.
If a person breaks into your home, would you send him to college or jail? If you answered "jail" then the country is your home, right? And people are breaking in to your home and going to...college?!
What's up with that?
["Ya know what they don't come with? Papers that prove their legitimacy to be here legally."]
Actually, troll, most immigrants *do* have those documents.
And simpleton right wingers like you actually wonder why you keep losing elections. Ignorance like yours is the reason why.
Future prez? I doubt that, but you're dumb enough that you could become a temporary primary front-runner.
Wrong. Stop right there. You own your home; you do not own the country you live in, no more than the founding fathers did. They took it. Non-indigenous people co-opting the land from its native inhabitants. Sound familiar? I don't expect you to understand the nuance involved in mitigating a problem that has no 100% solution and turning it to an advantage, but your analogy is over-simplified and short-sighted.
Future President of LaLa Land. You moron.
So if being "illegal" gets you upset, let's just change the law to make immigration legal. And heaven forbid that you should exceed the speed limit or DUI or bounce a check because that is more illegal than being in the US without papers.
You tell them GW. After all without your illegals who would mow the yard? Then there are the ones who taught you how to tie your shoes last year. Yes sir you tell them.
Here's the thing, you made sure to use the word immigrants in a good way without touching the hot button illegal issue. Clever. Clever of you to talk of amnesty when you knew your party would never allow it through congress. Now you are back in Texas which is dependent on an open border. The militiamen are no deterrent to Texans crossing into Mexico to get their stretch limo all reupholstered in leather by cheap Mexican labor. They do not stop the Mexicans from entering and shopping at Wal-Mart or Cosco in a safe environment.
Now if you would get Texas to secede so the Cartels can take over, you might become their armadillo czar?
This may be a stretch, but is there a chance GW will go out and try to improve his image to help Jeb overcome the stigma of being related to him?
Jeb told W what to say!
I guess GW knows those immigrants are just trying to put alimentos a sus familias.
The trouble with ignorance is that it picks up confidence as it goes along.

Former President George Bush doesn’t reside in the real world, or do most of the hierarchy of elected politicians who govern us. George Bush is stating that we should approach immigration “With a benevolent Spirit”. But he lives in his own Shangri La and is not menaced by illegal alien drunk drivers, criminals, drug peddlers and a reciprocating cost of supporting these people? A large majority of presidents, elected legislators, and judges are isolated from the illegal alien invasion as they live in gated communities and are never have to look for a job. Many of the illegal alien hordes don’t come here to begin a new business or new ideas… they come here with their hand open saying “Gimme” or demanding the same rights as citizens? Building contractors, who once earned a good living, must contend with companies who use cheap labor and outbid the honest businesses. This is especially so where immigration regulations are broken every day, because these building entities must compete against each other, using an illegal workforce and making huge profits for owner? It is the same with unions who are also benefiting from a wide array of unauthorized labor and being illegal ask no questions about the subscription dues.
It’s not the new law associated with the “Dreamers Act” but the chain migration that will follow its progress. Chain Migration points to the young people originally illegally coming to America with their parents, and then sponsoring their relatives. The issue with that is that the sponsor must sign an affidavit that they will financially support the family members that come into the country. So if it’s anything like the 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) finding passage, those who gained a path to citizenship in the millions and then sponsored Mom and Pop and others, dropped their promise and financial cost laid on the taxpayers once again in supporting their elderly family members. The 1986 the law was sterilized from the beginning anyway and millions more free welfare treat hunters gained entrance and the whole thing was a Carnival of errors. The politicians involved in this charade never funded properly a secure fence, or interior enforcement as special interest groups had already declared the ultimatum, which was in fact do next to nothing? Underfunded, the back door remained open and the unconcerned employers got cheap labor and to hell with the working American stiff. Since then we have had a poorly guarded border and the brave undermanned U.S. border Patrol men and women, threatened by drug cartels had to deal with the mess. I knew from the very inception of immigration law, that there was no intention to hold back the hordes of illegal foreigners, when the crime of entry didn’t add up to a class one felony. NOT ONLY ARE BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES IN SOME WAY OR OTHER PANDERING TO THE ILLEGAL ALIENS, BUT NOW THEY WANT TO RE-ACCESS OUR CITIZENS PRIVILEGES, BY STATES LIKE ILLINOIS GIVING OUT DRIVERS LICENSES? What George Bush talks about is LEGAL immigrants, not illegal alien paupers that benefit from our welfare state?
You will not get any true news support from the press or airwaves, as it full of propaganda about the true meaning illegal immigration. Americans have been buttered up for years by the lying establishment and have shown no real intentions of enacting mandatory E-Verify, known as the “Legal Workforce Bill” to at least stop the massive influx of illegal aliens looking for work. Another deciding factor that makes literal sense is passing The “Birthright Citizenship Bill”. A quick amendment that would stop pregnant women from conceiving a child to procure automatic citizenship, that once again is unfair to the U.S. taxpayer. Only the babies of a U.S. citizen would have the merit to gain citizenship and not the three or four babies, which alien mothers require us to support. These are bills that are sitting gathering dust and neither Political party has the gut to pass. Not that there is any chance of being read on the House floor or in Sen. Harry Reid’s Senate, as he doesn’t allow them to gain Cloture? If these mostly bunch of old decrepit lawmakers as Reid, cannot pass a reasonable budget in four years, what chance do two rational bills have of passing to discourage the influx of impoverished illegal migrants or immigrants, whether from across the borders or flying into this country masquerading as visitors?
We, the American people who suffer this costly indignity, not the Politian’s, not the employers, but the taxpayer. It’s inevitable that honest people are going to get skewered by those in power at the time and nothing will ever change while the same incumbents and robots of big business, unions and radical ethnic groups hold the reins of government. Nearly all 50 states are financially suffering because most legislators have ignored the major problems, except for a few that have placed their feet firmly on the ground. As little as 5 states are openly against the Democratic progressives who strongly believe that a path to citizenship for all illegal aliens will materialize as votes in coming years in their form of Socialist behavior. That it’s been seen in Socialist run nations that the more government gives, the more is expected and eventually turns into riots and civil disobedience and obscene deficits. Today I learned that President Obama has borrowed more money, then all the previous presidents combined?
Unless you're 100% Native American, you too are most likely the result of "chain immigration".
Immigration laws were enacted durnig the early 20th century for exactly the same reason today's Republican Party is so batsh&t crazy about Hispanic immigration - they don't look like us! "Us" being whites of Anglo-Saxon or western European descent, of course.
One could complare today's GOP with Canute striving to hold back the waves; except Canute knew he couldn't. Today's GOP, however...
This guy is as reasonable as a nail in the shoe. Pull it out and throw it away before you take another step! I can't think up enough insults to throw his way so I won't even try.
There will be those who get all bent out of shape because "what about illegal don't you understand?" So the solution to that problem is to change the law and make immigration legal. "So what about legal don't you understand?"
And that doesn't even touch what the gripers and complainers are doing that is technically illegal but they can get away with.
All I can say about it is " Mission Accomplished"
They will never get the Latino vote. Rubio is way too young to run for President. He isn't thick skinned like the rest of the Republicans. He is immature when it comes to stepping on toes. He's smart enough to realize, that he will not be their poster boy. It's whats on the inside that counts.
Let the Liberal progressives do what they want in the next four years, such as tax and spend and whatever issue they have in mind? Then sit back and watch the raging Socialist agenda implode as the general population sees their country being taken over by bloated government, reducing energy supplies of oil, national gas and the closing of the coal industry. Then after this Liberal Socialist financial tidal wave is exhibited, let the wrath of the average American tear through the ranks of these fools that run this country. Watch as the hard core Democrats cut funding to border enforcement, and instituting a new illegal alien amnesty and you paying for everything. The U.S. Constitution was written long before food stamps, (WIC) Women, Infants and Children, including numerous other free food programs, plus many versions of subsidized low income housing (Section 8), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Child Tax Credits (Illegal alien fraud of child tax credits is very prevalent nationwide, to the estimated amount of $7 billion dollars, excluding EITC), Medicaid, free emergency hospital visits, and giveaway cell phones, which is attracting even more impoverished people to our nation. Prior to the current 80 programs now accepted as public assistance immigrants or anybody who came here received nothing, only what a few charities could offer.
After the stock markets shake with fear, more small businesses will be going broke and large corporations sending out feelers for less taxed countries to set up shop. Even more involvement of government in influencing our freedoms, the joke will be on the American people, with even more unemployment, closing businesses and the distributing of even more entitlement; even more welfare for illegal migrants, even more grand “Rules and Regulations” to stifle the creation of small businesses and a sky rocketing deficit at state and federal level and this country on the edge of a even larger red ink abyss. California, the state once associated with progress, has ended up with the last fiscal year with a cash deficit of $9.6 billion. As of November 30, that cash deficit totaled $24.9 billion and is being covered with $14.9 billion of internal borrowing (temporary loans from special funds), and $10 billion of external borrowing.” Billions of these dollars are being spent on illegal aliens turning up here with children, whom become instant citizens. How much does your state payout to mollycoddle foreign nationals who don’t respect our laws and who want something for nothing? There are even organizations advertising in foreign lands to bring their babies here to gain citizenship. Then in most cases they return to the country of origin, but they have the paperwork for the child at a later time to receive a U.S. Passport, and gain admittance for the parents? That’s we so drastically need the passage of THE BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP BILL.
The American worker whether Democrat or Republican should do the right thing for the huge jobless population and demand that the temporary tenant in the Oval office, and all the sub tenants in Washington that thrive on the misery of citizens and honest green card holders pass “THE LEGAL WORKFORCE BILL”. E-Verify is not perfect, but it’s all we have to eject the millions of illegal labor from job market? Throw out Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada as he is like death dealer of any bills in Congress and refuses to allow any reasonable compromise. Stop the massive national theft of Social Security numbers, and install an official ID with a fingerprint or retina scan for all citizens. Approve an amendment to the 14th Amendment, “THE BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP BILL” to sever the growing problem of millions of pregnant women arriving here with unborn babies, to intentionally steal the public assistance programs from our own children, our elderly and homeless. Illegal aliens are stealing our future, the rising need for more taxes and our way of life. Both political parties are entirely to blame, driven by greed, big labor, big religion and the never ending hunt for more votes. States that had no election restrictions on absentee ballots, voting stations was very likely compromised by non citizens voting and now our future is open to expectations.
Study: Obamacare sales tax will cause premiums to rise by up to $10k over 10 years
By Stephen Frank on www.capoliticalnews.com
Obama is a sneak. He told us that under ObamaCare we would be able to keep our doctors if we liked them. He never added, “and can afford them”.
“Obamacare “imposes a new sales tax on health insurance that starts at $8 billion in 2014, increase to $14.3 billion in 2018, and will continue to increase each year,” AHIP explains to introduce the study on the Health Insurance Tax (HIT). Although the government taxes the health insurance providers, the Congressional Budget Office acknowledged in 2009 that the cost “would be passed on to purchasers and would ultimately raise insurance premiums by a corresponding amount.”
Seniors health care was sold out by the AARP—the rest of us sold out by Democrats that believe private insurance and doctors should not exists. Add $10,000 to the cost of health care—how many businesses will be able to pay for that? In less than ten years private insurance, hospitals and doctors will disappear from America.
