Last night the twitters lit up with word that the New Yorker had highlights from Rachel's Sunday appearance with Tony Kushner at Joe's Pub in New York City. The Public Theater is doing a series called Duets, in which two interesting but not necessarily related people talk to each other on stage. (It kind of reminds me of Sundance Channel's Iconoclasts show.) So last Sunday is was Rachel and Tony Kushner.
As I said, the New Yorker piece has highlights of what was discussed and a nice photo of the two of them on stage and it's a quick, fun read. But also worthy of note is that artist Michael Arthur was in attendance and did a drawing from the audience. Above is his in-progress picture. Click through to the Joe's Pub Facebook, which hosts a lot of his work, for the final product. Also check out his site for more galleries.
This is going to sound weird, but that is the best, most authentic rendering of Maddow's hand and gesture that I've ever seen.

This event sounds like a wonderful meeting of the minds...would loved to have been there. Anyone in attendance like to fill the rest of us in?
Michael Arthur's illustration is quite clever and, yes, Rachel does have very expressive hands...I had my camera set for 1/200th sec. per exposure when I photographed her in San Francisco this year; the pictures were just lovely (for an amateur), but I still had quite a few discards due to the speed and flurry of those hands... Her level of energy is amazing.
She has lovely hands - one of the reasons I love watching her.
I think of the body mind connection and how deeply passionate Rachel is
and how her hands speak volumes... gives us an opportunity to reACT to her words and then we tell on ourselves. Life is so good!!!
A light that shines and even opens hearts like mine to politics.
Someone i would love to have a drink with and we both could wear our best coloredSneakers
I thought Maddow didn't believe in a living "God". So why did she say this?
If her next ambition is to spearhead a movement to insult Smokey Bear, we're gonna have words.
I wouldn't pick those exact words, but he understands exactly what she meant. Smokey Bear is on the job. God has a sense of humor, which outshines all of us.
Wrong, she's a practicing Catholic.
I don't know or care what her beliefs are. I think a lot of people do, for some reason, and a lot assume that just because she is an intellectual, well-educated lefty that she must be a fire-breathing atheist. And it's not just the wingers who assume that. But it's obvious that, whatever her beliefs are, she is not hostile to religion as religion. Her background (related to nuns, AIDS activist) suggests that simply cannot be possible (and the fact that she makes a consistent point of always introducing the Baptist clergyman she often has on the show--whose name I can't remember--as her friend).
And if she is a practicing Catholic, then she's gotten good enough to work without a net. (I have to be honest: I have no idea what the hell that was supposed to mean.)
Well then I guess you thought wrong. Not sure where you got your idea besides buying into right wing hype that all liberals are athiests. She has often spoke of being raised Catholic and has used God references in the positive in the past. Frankly, liberals practice Jesus teachings far more than any of the buybull babblers ever have.
Footnote: Believing in a higher power doesn't mean buying into a 2012 year old book written 60 years after Jesus death by 150 men. Just sayin...
I am now of the mind that she was just poking fun at someone, because I find it funny now.
Her shoes are going to be her signature. Wouldn't you like to be in them maybe, for just an hour. I think she's a workaholic who loves her job way too much. She's a raven.
Why aren't MSNbc hosts talking about their meeting with the Pres??? I really really want to know what they talked about.
I really like the art.
And a bit a different slice of insight into Rachel off TRMS.
Trying to find the right segment to reply to is difficult, but if the right people or software sees this, you'll know.
Dear Wayne
I have asked this many times with no response. So, maybe you can respond.
Do I have a right to own a bazooka, a RPG, or hand grenades?
Thank you for the response I'm sure you'll give me.

This may not be the proper forum, but Here goes. The Republican Plan to rig elections via electoral vote changes is suicide for Repulicans. There have been thousands of men and women have died for our right to vote in a fair and honest way, was it in vain? Does the Republican Party realize that when the families of the ones that have died in service, and the surviving veterans become aware of these efforts I suspect there will be a large amount of backlash. It will take an organized effort to show people how their vote is being tampered with, and by whom, along with a huge voter registration effort for new voters, and then maybe the Republican Party will really see the error of their policies. As the old saying goes "you can put lipstick on a pig, but it is still a pig".
