Tea Party Republican Senator Jim DeMint announced today that he is resigning next month to run the conservative Heritage Foundation. Slate picks up this part of the Wall Street Journal report about the South Carolina Republican:
"This is an urgent time," the senator said, "because we saw in the last election we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections." Mr. DeMint, who was a market researcher before he entered politics, said he plans to take the Heritage Foundation's traditional research plus that of think tanks at the state level and "translate those policy papers into real-life demonstrations of things that work." He said, "We want to figure out what works at the local and state level" and give those models national attention.
For Republicans now, it does seem that the states are where they're going to try to figure out what works and how to get their policies in effect. The movement began after the 2010 elections, when Republicans swept to power in state legislatures -- giving us two years of Republican governance marked by anti-abortion, anti-union, make-voting-harder legislation. It made for tough sledding at the national level in 2012, as Republicans picked up only two more states in the presidential election.
But at the level of governorships and state legislatures, Republicans picked up more seats. Both parties consolidated super-majorities in new places, but it is Republicans who emerged with complete control of 24 states. If they want to experiment in the states in the way Senator DeMint describes, they have a wide, wide field.
We got the same kind of news this week from billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who tells the Wall Street Journal (paywall) he intends to double his $100 million spending. As the Journal reports, Adelson intends to funnel that money "especially to state-level, antiunion initiatives." Look out below.

there aren't enough expletives in our language to give this POS a proper send-off.
I'll be more than glad to help you to make up some!!
There is some really creative cursing on this episode of the Smartest Man in the World podcast. Between Deadwood and a letter about cursing in turn of the last century baseball there are combinations that I have never heard before.

The people who wrote our Constitution risked everything, including their lives, to reject the 'Divine Right' of kings, the rule of the many by a wealthy few. It is cruelly ironic that the Taliban/Teaparty chose to name itself for an act of rebellion against what it stands for. Sheldon Adelson, Rupert Murdoch, Donald Trump and a few other wealthy, short sighted, self-serving individuals are trying to buy the US government, from local school boards, state judges and legislators all the way to the Presidency. (Murdoch tried to buy Patreus as president.)
The richest 1% have made this country one of the most corrupt countries in the world.
One does not have wonder any more about if the the rich control our government, especially the Republican pae rt of it.
Had Patreus agreed to be Murdoch's boy, he would have been the Republican presidential candidate answering to this mean spirited POS.
DeMint's resignation is a great sign that, maybe, just maybe, the Koch Brothers hold on the Republican Party is weakening. Resigning the Senate when you have four years left on your term says that someone or someones wanted you out. The Heritage Foundation job is no promotion. Boehner's purge of some of the T.E.A.s from committee positions is a sign that he has the votes in the House to do what he wants to do and not what Cantor and Ryan (as dictated by the Kochs) want to do.
With a strong, well funded campaign, DeMint's vacated seat could go to the Democrats. Many of the recent special elections have gone to the Democratic candidate.
I would add to your list of expletives PUTZ (Yiddish) and PUTO (Spanish). No need to confine ourselves to English.

he's such a total loser and yes indeed a complete POS, but all these angry bigoted, sexist white guys can't get over the fact they're no longer relevant or "In Charge".
I'm reading some more PTSD Poetry only this time it's one of mine...
Go Rachel..!!
Demented only exists because we let his traitor ancestors off easy 150 years ago.
As for Meyer Lansky, er, I mean Sheldon Addledson, he's probably not that long for the planet, and will soon turn himself into a "good Republican" pushing up daisies out in the desert.
Finally we will be rid of Jim Dementor! No more sucking the happiness out of everything.
"..."because we saw in the last election we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections..." DeMint.
Yes you did and they were soundly REJECTED. What you really plan to do is indoctrinate and fool people into thinking your ideology is something different than what we are rejecting.
We the people are sick of being dominated by a minority through 'legal-eaze' put in place by the very wealthy's bribery. We know that without "redistricting" the Dems would quite likely have retaken the House. Just keep pushing and you will soon discover why unions came together in the first place. Enough is enough and money won't save you.
As far as Adelson is concerned he is not coming to Washington to try to buy the next election...he is coming to bribe officials to curtail investigations in to his activities of bribing Chinese officials and others to get his gambling organizations going in their countries. He stands to lose Billions if not having to end his businesses entirely. Maybe jail time too. He spent over a $150 mil on this election to try to get a new DoJ to stop the investigations...which is nothing compared to what he stands to lose if found guilty. 50 yrs ago would a Casino owner donating $150 mil to influence an election go unchallenged.
Frog better start noticing the water is getting too hot after 30yrs of Reaganomics before we get a corporate oligarchy as a government. People are arming not to rebel against government control but to stand against corporate control...polluting the planet and the economy.
NO! You go down to the People, those who vote, those who are governed, and you ASK THEM what works!
We don't need more manipulative market research on on how to herd people. That's just the political equivelant to putting milk in the back of the store to get folks to Buy More Stuff.
This nation needs human beings listening to the human beings they are supposed to represent.
Spoken like another doomed humanitarian! I like it!
Sounds like just another excuse to get a free meal. There are way too many foundatiions out there. Is this a new religion, or something. The Foundation is having trouble finding itself or defining itself. Who do you hate? is their topic of choice. I think they're out of bedroom tricks. We will never be bambuzzled again. Once bit twice shy.
Well said, my friend.
Needsmore - And why do you expect that republiCant's would honestly talk to the people to see what it is they want? We just had an election 4 weeks ago and the people said exactly what they want - however, the GOTP'ers are deaf to our answer! No, the forced ultra-sounds, the "forcible rape", the attempt to define a fetus as a person, the hate for immigrants, the opposition to "gay marriage" - all of this was answered by our votes!
No, Mr. DeMint is going to the Heritage Foundation to find out what buzz-words will work to bring people over to the batcrap crazy side - cause its not as though the GOTP are going to change their policy positions! And for those states that voted conservatives to the majority good luck with that, cause I'm thinking that you all will regret your decisions - I know I do!
dumfukistanis are very proud of their ignorance.
Right as usual, ZR.
Wingnut welfare at it's finest...but as others have speculated , there is some serious shMitt going on behind the scenes.
A senate seat is a license to print money , so it ain't about the pay.
Ahhh . . . DeMint leaving the US Senate is some of the best news I've heard in long time. One less turd in the Republican punch bowl!
Saying good riddance would be too kind.
Wow, I didn't expect so many people who aren't sticking up for this "man"!
Saying "good riddance" misses an underlying point. This is the beginning of the Teahaddist campaign to claim that Myth Romney lost because he wasn't
psychoticfanaticalideologically pure enough. That's actually what they mean when they say they failed to adequately communicate their message and ideas (sic). "Personhood" zealots like Mike Huckabee or Governor Vaginalprobe of Va. (personhood for a zygote, though not for a grown female person) are not far behind. Huckabee has the money, organization, and media platform to make himself a formidable candidate in 2016, and aside from Rachel's followers, no one is thinking seriously about recalling Gov. Vaginalprobe.TeaVangelist Whackos, get elected because teavangelist whackos vote for them. This election was not nearly the landslide that many of us like to think it was. Right wing theocrats revel in notions of martyrdom, and I see a cataclysmic showdown on the horizon, for which we'd better be ready.
Why don't they just give it up. Americans stand United against any kind of a party that doesn't sell beer. It's sad and gloomy, it's just not fun anymore to be standing up for World inequality, after the human Rights intiative was passed in 1964. They should just stop complaining, get a starbucks' and go get your nails done, maybe they'll feel better. Some of us get dirty at our jobs. Some of us are not welcome on your elevators. Some of us prefer the elevators that crash through the roof. Yes, I'm still after that everlasting gobsucker. At least I have the ingredients.Number 4 sounds good.
Except Monsanto has now taken over the market with GMO sugar beets and carrots that we have no control over or even the right to know where they are used, and your gobsucker is now toxic.
Shop at the healthfood stores. We do have friends in high places too. Avoid beef. Monsanto is being exposed right now. Their seeds are manufactured too. no nutritional value whatsoever. We no longer accept the role as guinea pigs, let Wall st. eat that crap. I'm serious, it's worth it to pay a little more it fills you up faster and you end up spending less and eating less than with the generic grocery stores.Let the rich buy their food there. We demand healthy nutritious and real food. Monsanto,is going down they've already been ousted from other Countries. Monsanto causes health risks to our temples. Very unbalanced.
Oh, if Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring" were still alive, she would be once again writing about the evil deeds of Monsanto. Please read "Silent Spring" if you haven't already done so. I really think you'd enjoy it, Angel777!
Did I get my wings yet?
I think I'd rather he stayed in the senate. Something doesn't smell right with this at all...
It does leave me with the feeling that there's another "shoe" still to drop.
The trouble with ignorance is that it picks up confidence as it goes along.

;-)
This is the best quote ever for the right wing nutjobs!!
Doesn't smell right? It totally makes sense. Did you see what Dick Army was paid when he left Freedom works? $8 Million. I'm sure the heritage foundation is paying at least as good as that. Follow the money. :-)
Just a spelling error. Heritage Foundation, a right-wing stink tank...
I have no doubt God told DeMint to do this.
To be clear tough, I mean the God from "$ In God We Trust $."
DeMint is a "poor" Senator. He has two 30 year mortgages and no outside money. This is all about the money, and it likely will lead to even more strife on the right. DeMint is the King Liar IMHO of the entire right wing, he once said that medical marijuana was in the ACA. The Heritage job is a huge microphone upgrade from elective office.
South Carolina loss
One good thing: whoever replaces him will not have the power and position in the Senate that he has, so whatever trouble they come to cause won't be as much as he can do.
I've seen suggestions that one possible replacement could be S.C. State Senator Tom Davis, who would be my pick (if only for the amusement I'd find at having both a Sen. Al Franken and a Sen. Tom Davis).
Franken & Davis XMas Special
Franken & Davis as the Rolling Stones
The trouble with ignorance is that it picks up confidence as it goes along.

When a Democrat gets elected as South Carolina's US Senator to replace DeTurd, then something good will finally be happening in SC.
Did you see Colbert running down who might be eligible to replace DeMint?
http://www.nbcchicago.com/entertainment/television/NATL-Stephen-Colbert-Angles-for-SC-Senate-Seat-182531551.html
Jim, the reason you "were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections" is because there is no way to communicate this kind of nonsense truthfully and win. Hence, I presume you will be formulating your lies in a new way at the Heritage Foundation.
There is the possibility that his party's ideas were understood by voters and rejected on this basis.
The Socialist party only won by 2%. That means 49% of America knows what you fools are up to. The great thing is that 70% more republicans own and know how to use our firearms then you Commies. So keep sipping your little lattes boys and girls.
Our Revolution and the impending civil war is gonna be a thing of Beauty.
That is pure bullsh!t. South Carolina STARTED the Civil War, and the SOUTH LOST!
I'll quote it again:
"South Carolina is too small to be a Republic and too large to be an insane asylum"
He is in South Carolina where he will simply be replaced by another ultra-conservative. Woe to those that exist in those 24 GOP ran states. Looks like the courts will be busy the next four years dealing with the intent of Republican law makers governance. Hey the company towns were democratic right?? I guess that is their idea of a corporate democracy...uh er I mean slavery?
DeMint, tea partiers, and some in the media are under the illusion that being a far-right extremist somehow makes an individaul more of a conservative. It doesn't. It just means that they are extremists.
It's important for those of us who want efficient government to point out the distinction between conservative and right-wing extremist. As long as DeMint and Norquist and Limbaugh and FOX are portrayed as conservative, it validates and empowers them in the mainstream.
The Heritage Foundation is, among other things, a lobbying organization. How can DeMint essentially go to work for a lobbying organization immediately after leaving the Senate. Isn't this a violation of existing rules governing Senators becoming lobbyists?
It's a get rich scheme or racket. It provides housing for undergraduates who have decided their soul was a fair price to pay to join. It's more like how can I use these morons, to make more money for me. It's about unqualified government workers, who have become modern day traitors to the rest of society. If we're not allowed in then neither is our Dad. Our Dad can go there, but he chooses to stay right here with his children.
can a new civil war be far behind?
They don't hardly make 'em like him any more - but just to be on the safe side, he should be castrated anyway.
"we were not able to communicate conservative ideas that win elections."
Au contraire, mon ami- you communicated them quite well, and the electorate got the message!
Shhhhh.......Don't tell him that. They think their ideas are winners......its just the way they made their points was a tad off.I like it when they chase their tails. We could be enjoying this for months.
Good riddance Senator Demented. Have fun bilking the Her-etarded Foundation just like you bilked the public since 2005! Which remedial, completely delusional D-bag will take his place as the leading tea-tard in the Senate?! Stay tuned..
We haven't had long to celebrate the election, and in Wisconsin we had no time to because the money won on the local level and we have monsters in the State Capital. We are in a pitched battle to have any control over voting, health care, mining laws, fracking laws, education, you name it. It truly is a pitched battle and I don't see an end to it. Keeping the faith and working as hard for as little as we've gotten here in WI over the last two years it just shows how hard this fight is and will be. DeMint leaving his elected post just makes him that much more dangerous and makes him an open enemy of the people getting make choices about their very lives. Don't celebrate his departure... he just entered the battle for YOUR life choices.
Come on out to California - we're about to enter a new golden era now that the cavemen are all gone...
I would go, but, it's too expensive to live there. I might make Disneyland my new home. Has anyone ever tried it, to live there undetected? I would be down there mixing it up with the Pirates and then I would sleep in the Haunted House, I should feel right at home.
Thank God. This is good for America. This guy given enough rope would have started another Civil War. The South has died again.
Yet another ill informed that thinks the Confederates were Republicans. Sorry bud, But it was the Republican Party that freed the slaves and it was the Democrats that founded the KKK.
Can we please keep moving forward. Only past good memories are allowed at this site. You'll have to read the rules, you have a multitude of hair colors on your head. You also have to remove your white costume , not allowed. Just take a quick glance at the rulebook they sent you.
Do we have a double reg here? Isn't doing that multiple personality disorder and against the rules?
The other personna seems to have a lust for using guns on fellow Americans.
GOOD NEWS = he's leaving.
BAD NEWS = there are too many more just like him.
People should be very very concerned, it's at the State level where the insanity cliff is harming us. Today Gov. Snyder, here in Michigan, has decided we will now be a Right to Work (what a misnomer!!) State. People, get involved with what is going on at your local levels! What can't be done at the national level IS being done at the State level, and slowly rights are being stripped away.
My favorite part is ""We want to figure out what works at the local and state level" and give those models national attention." But not a certain healthcare program from MA right? That particular chestnut is SOCIALISM!
republicans are traitors. the tea party is a hate group. we have got to get billionaires money of out politics. that is all.
America is not for sale, and if that was their intention, then let's expose it, they have taken all lthe jobs and moved them overseas, what next? Time to move the Republicans to another Country, how about Greenland, there's plenty of land there to rape.
I guess Sheldon underestimated how much money it would take to buy your own government.
It will be much more "cost effective" at the State and local level and just you watch... he will be amazingly successful because it is so much more easy to give a few thousand to win an election at the county and State level and our people aren't generally aware of how much DAMAGE this will do yet.
Concur. Sheldon and those like him might well NOT underestimate next time. They've got 4 years and too much wealth for the Republicans not to come up with some new forms of getting control of our government, our lives, our choices (as per Elizabeth42 @#15).
Places like AZ, WI, TX, FL, and MI are state level GOP testing grounds for what I see is an eventual national coup. These states are living examples what Republican control will be like and I for one, do not welcome it. We've seen just how ugly these folks got in 2012 but I don't think we've seen all of it.
I don't know how much involvement unions have with Adelson's businesses, but how detrimental could they have been (to their bottom line) if Adelson is a multi-billionaire? Here's a guy who's made more money than he knows what to do with and the best he can do is spend millions to keep the little guy down when he could be doing so much good (I know his main goal is to shrink and weaken unions and thereby reduce contributions to Democrats, but it is the workers who will suffer the most).
Brewer, I agree.
I would like the "business community" to adopt a more friendly atmosphere with employees. I know, they think they are doing too much already, but really… the economy would boom of they would pay employees more.
I propose a new direction, since they hate unions and their Democratic donations most of all.
How about this tactic: Pay employees more money without any union involvement? (I am a pro union person, who believes in unions if they are necessary to make employers do right. I belonged to a union for years and personally benefit from that).
Wouldn't it be a much smarter way to adopt the Henry Ford way? Pay employees enough money to buy the products. This could even affect of the ultimate goal, to vote for Republicans.
http://quotes4all.net/henry%20ford:4.html
But yeah, it's a crazy idea (not), but look at the success of Ford. People buy Fords to this day, and carry that over to GM, etc.
http://www.ideafinder.com/history/inventors/ford.htm
The American Way being thrown away with all this promoting job cuts and wage cuts, tax cuts… when more jobs, higher wages would greatly improve the deficit/debt picture and the economic picture, both.
The jobs bills were blocked by Republicans to win an election, they lost and spent so much money doing so. They run up debt to starve the beast. It doesn't have to be this way. We will never all agree, but there are many business people that see the benefit to their business by paying employees well. Even in today's world.
AH, the Republican’s failed “JOBS JOBS JOBS” program... let’s see how that actually worked...
There are now 24 Republican led-states... legislatures, Governor and all.
Half of those ‘Red states’ – 12 of them – were responsible for almost 75% of the TOTAL PUBLIC SECTOR JOB LOSS in 2011.
Republican Governors cut roughly 700,000 PUBLIC SECTOR JOBS in the last three years.
Say you worked for one of those States. Say you earn the average state public sector salary – take home is around $52,000 plus or minus, a year.
That’s a $1000 a week. Let’s assume this... 80% of that goes to living expenses. That leaves 20% for disposable income. $200 dollars. Again, we’re assuming.
So you spend $200 each week... just blowing it on stuff... whatever you want, whatever you need. Good times... what the heck.
WHOA! Republicans close your department... too much government, don’t need it, or you. There’s $200 disposable income a week out of the economy.
Let’s see... $200 times 700,000... that’s $140 million dollars. A week.
That’s $7,280,000,000 in a year... that’s billions... in disposable income – lost. Not counting the peripheral losses, businesses who cater to those 700,000.
$21 billion, 840 million dollars lost to the economy for the those three years. All to satisfy the needs of some Republican politicians’ egos.
That’s not going to pay down the national debt anytime soon. But without those layoffs, economists say, our national unemployment would be around 7%.
@sandyc954,
I agree with you on the American will to work hard for at least half of our citizens anyway. And i agree that unions have, since there inception, have done great things to protect the workers from overly greedy corperations in the past.
But Henry Fords era was a differant one than today. Every union worker has this misconception that every single buisness owner cares nothing for its employees.
But the biggest thing that is different from 100 yrs ago.
You have every bit as much stuff in your home (approximately 89%) as i do and everybody else on this forum including every single union worker that is marked MADE IN CHINA.
Only when we stop blaming each other and start buying products that are made from each other will companies become profitable again.
jonnymoses (#2?)
But, how do you know this?
I would like to have employers stop pushing down on employees so hard, they seem to have decided this was in their best interests, but many business owners say it is good for business to pay employees well and that is why they do it.
I wish I could recall the current business woman that said that recently. It may have been Margot Dorfman below?
http://www.businessforafairminimumwage.org/Quotes
I am not blaming employers any more than employers have been blaming employees.
I agree in a slight way, we should move past this trend to blame or just cut off workers, which has been happening for a long, long time. The facts show this is so Production up, corporate profit up. But employment and wages went down.
That shows me the reason is not because employees are taking a toll on businesses.
http://dailybail.com/home/chart-us-corporate-profits-vs-employee-wages.html
But I do say the lack of U.S. jobs and lowering or flattening of wages is taking a toll on Revenues and Economy.
I don't suppose there are any Democrats who could win his seat?
Gov Haley will appoint a Repub for a couple of years, so we better get to work. In fact, this should be a "call to arms" for the Dems. The Republican push at the state level has worked well so far and if the Dems don't stop them at the state level, we will look up one day and they will have altered the landscape so much that it will be impossible for a Dem to win. I hear the progressives have got some strategies for going after local elections...and they need our support at a local level. Are there any up and coming young people in your state got that you can support? That's something we can ALL do.
So Demint is going to head up the American Taliban. Yeah, good luck with that.
I've often wondered what it must feel like to stand before a crowd seething with the very hatred and derision that you've helped to foment. I guess if I knew that I'd know what it is to be Jim DeMint (or Sarah Palin). Perhaps he saw Dick Armey's 8 million dollar buyout at Freedom Works and the potential end of the sham filibuster in the Senate and figured now was as good a time as any to exit stage right.
Let's hope this is a long ling of GOP resignations! Let them go to the state level. They will ruin the lives of the people in those states and we will be there to pick up the pieces like we always do! Maybe then we can get something done in Congress!
