I know this story is all over the place but I'm posting it here anyway because it's just too refreshing not to want to share it and maybe you spend your time immersed in political news so this is the sort of thing you might otherwise miss. The story is simple enough. Jay Z is taking the subway to the last of his eight shows that opened the new arena in Brooklyn. The lady he sits next to doesn't recognize him even though he's obviously a big deal, so she's asks him who he is.
Then the world realizes that everyone in New York is someone, and the lady is artist Ellen Grossman. In remarking on her sudden fame to her friend Tanzina Vega at the New York Times, Grossman said, "I think the world is in the mood for a sweet, old lady." Yes.
Want a little extra relevance? She did her undergrad at Cooper Union.

Jay-Z proves that you can be talented, Rich, famous and a nice guy and a gentleman.
As an old white dude, I don't know his work, be he certainly is a gentleman and a scholar.
I loved reading this story.
The bond between strangers....
Too cute!
humble man he is! a great video-
She's got 99 problems but a sketch ain't one
What a wonderful, uplifting story!
Sweeet!
Both beautiful.
Who knew JayZ would ride the subway?
I love the Asymetric Resolve. It reminds of when a wave retreats from shore and the sand makes beautiful patterns.
Yes, and so cool that she's connected to the awesome, pizza-pulley students (@FreeCooperUnion) at Cooper Union!
Just in time for Christmas!
My kid is at Cooper Union! Loves it
so, Jay Z should make a BIG donation to Cooper Union if they remain Tuition free! The contribution could be made in honor of ellen goodman.
Fab.
Wow, Cooper Union. Full circle.
I hope there's a 2-minute segment on this tonight!
so, jay Z should now make a very large contribution to Cooper Union provided they maintain free tuition. it could be in Ellen Goodman's name!
Lovely! I am so happy to see Jay Z humble, new found respect and I love Ellen Grossman's work!
Chris; can't say I'm happy about not seeing Rachel.
I'm glad for her she got some time off. Given that she had the night off, I'm glad it was you who stood in for her.
But I sure do like me some Rachel.
I'm thankful that MSNBC new channel shows the viewer's all side of the political news and TRMS is my must see and there is something here for all to get the facts if you want to be informed. Thanks to all of the great people you find to contribute their wealth of knowledge even when it's not a popular point of view. I for one love hearing both sides of anything(as they as 2 side to every story) I love that, thats what the place for politic bring to our country. Ps... I would love to see the reaction of Chris Matthew after the first debate again!
So refreshing! Love it.
Maybe Jay-Z should have asked her who she was! Everybody has a story!
If he had asked her what she did, she'd probably have just said, "I'm just a housewife, I like to paint." And that's probably where it would have ended. I took care of a woman in a nursing home, very quiet, polite, ladylike, and she had these beautiful oil paintings on her wall. Upon looking closer, they were signed by her.
This is the reason we all love and flock to New York from all over the world - even chance for all.
I think we tend to forget that celebrities, when they go home and take off their fancy clothing, are just like all of us. They lock the door, argue with their loved ones, love their children, and watch TV. People are people the world over. I enjoyed watching this because he was willing to be open to a little old lady in the subway. This was cute to watch a second time when I knew the whole story.
This is the reaspn we all flock to New York from all over the world = if you can't make it there you can't make it anywhere = remember Frank Sinatra's song. Also even shot for all.
I know who Jay-Z is, but I'd be more in awe of running into Ellen Grossman if I was on the subway!
Jay Z was sort of adorable, he was all wiggly like he was 5 talking to an adult and telling them he liked to sing and then being proud he sang in his school play or something. I will never look at Jay Z the same again, what a great personality. Beyonce is lucky.
