Photojournalist Meryl Schenker took this picture very early this morning in Washington state, in the first hours when same-sex couples could get marriage licenses. Meryl writes:
One month after Washington State voters approved the state's marriage equality law in Ref. 74, same-sex couples get marriage licenses for the first time on December 6th, 2012. At around 1:30am, Larry Duncan, 56, left, and Randy Shepherd, 48, from North Bend, Wash. got their marriage license. The two plan to wed on December 9th, the first day it is possible for them to wed in a church in Washington State. They have been together for 11 years. Originally from Dallas, Texas, they moved here 7 years ago because it's more gay friendly. Randy is a computer programer and Larry is a retired psychology nurse.
Thank you for the picture, Meryl. (You can see more of her work here.)

I think I may have met these guys, back in Dallas. Mazel tov to the groom and groom!
I didn't realize the guys from ZZ Top were getting married.
I'm So proud of my State! Gay Marriage and Legal pot both! It's about time! :-)
The State of Washington made both gay marriage and pot smoking legal as of 12:01 a.m. December 6th, 2012.
It's the fulfillment of the Biblical prophesy: Leviticus 20:13. "If a man lies with a man as he would with a woman, they should both be stoned."
Other Things The Bible also Forbids - hope you don't qualify
1. No Tattoos:
Leviticus 19:28:
Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.
2. Gossiping
Leviticus 19:16:
Thou shalt not go up and down as a talebearer among thy people: neither shalt thou stand against the blood of thy neighbour; I am the LORD.
3. Eating a Ham Sandwich
Leviticus 11:7-8:
And the swine, he is unclean to you.
Of their flesh shall ye not eat.
4. Getting Divorced
Mark 10:11-12:
Whosoever putteth away his wife, and marrieth another or whosoever marrieth her that is put away from her husband committeth adultery.
5. Working on a Sabbath
Exodus 31:14-15:
For it is holy unto you: everyone that defileth it shall surely be put to death.
6. Women speaking in Houses of God
1 Corinthians 14:34-35:
Let your women keep silence in the churches:
If they will learn anything, let them ask their husbands at home.
7. Eating Shrimp, Lobster or other assorted Seafood.
Leviticus 10-11:
And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and of all that move in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:
8. Losing your virginity before marriage
Deuteronomy 22:20-21:
Then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she die.
...lets see...go @!$%# yourself...is that on the list?
they should have down arrows on these discussion boards
LinusNC, your list proves that the bible is full of nonsense, just as I'm sure you intended.
The Old Testament was replaced with the New testament, Jesus is the way and the light, from here on out. I am currently working on the newest Testament, The Greatest story never told. Not available in stores yet, I'm stuck on Chapter 7 though, I call it Uncle Freddy.Santa is gay, I thought that suit was kind of flashy.(just kidding).
Yes, this picture just warms my heart. I'm so happy for our victory here in Washington. It's about time! Thanks for posting this Rachel.
Sweet.
Sweet???
Sweet. Thanx for that moment of happy sanity!
Such a nice couple. Sweet photo, beautifully done. Made me weepy!
I wish Randy and Larry and all the soon-to-be newlyweds in Washington state all the happiness in the world.
That is the cutest thing I've seen all day. Congratulations to them both.
Awesome couple ! Support the freedom to marry :

Best Wishes to you, Randy & Larry. May you have many happy years together!
My late uncle and his partner were the sweetest couple for over 15 years. They had a rich, happy, monogamous relationship. Even though they registered as domestic partners in their SF hometown, when my uncle passed, his spouse lost the following:
1) rent controlled apartment;
2) survivor benefits of social security;
3) survivor benefits of pension;
4) waiving of estate taxes
My uncle's spouse had to relocate out of state to find an affordable place to live on own his limited pension and social security benefits. He had to leave his network of friends, doctors, family and community and religious support systems. He was able to find a gay-friendly city in Portland, Oregon.
I wish I had been able to attend their wedding!
Even with state marriage we don't know what our vulnerabilities are from
outside the state. How will this impact inheritances and custody? We
are on the cutting edge and will suffer the wounds of warriors. We really
don't know all of the unintended consequences of this to us and the
larger society. I truly believe that even though it may be kicking and
screaming that the larger society will gain from what we do today as
they have with where we have lead in the past. I love the pictures of
those who have been together a lifetime. It belies the stereotype of short-lived relationships and bathroom sex. Yea for them and all of us!
A Brady, Sorry your uncle missed out on the unfolding events, very sad his partner had to start over.
We must also get rid of DOMA to ensure the things you mentioned get changed.
There are many things tied to federal laws, which need to be addressed before this is done.
I recommend those folks who can, get pension cash out if possible. Put the spouse as beneficiary. Find ways to streamline, make contracts with legally binding agreements if the worst happens to make sure the surviving spouse remains in the home, gets monetary security, or whatever.
It should not have to be that way, but we are not there yet. NOM is still trying to spread untruths about LGBTQ folks.
I know it happens. In Iowa, neighbors of mine were a lesbian couple. One of them was killed in a car accident, her family came in and took the kids, the furniture, the car, and had power of attorney over the house. Obviously these two should have had a will, but they were young and healthy and didn't think about accidents. So the surviving partner had nothing.
Heartbreaking, Willow. Lots of young folks do not think of these things, and wills are something many people avoid.
It's hard for some people to deal with this stuff, especially if they are faced with people that are "against" them.
We need a 'Like' button here!!
REALLY!
Cathy
That's what the arrow button is for.
Are either of these guys hired to play Santa at local malls?
To have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.
Lovely Photo Meryl!
I thought for sure these guys were in the South and getting a hunting license. Been planning to move to Washington where folks like this could be anybody....
meaning their politics could be out-of-this-world. That's OK, I'll just assume their harmless wherever I go and mind my own business.
That is the beauty of what this photo captures anonymoose . . . we cannot read a book . . . or gay or straight people . . . by their covers . . . ; = )
You're right, I've been in New Orleans for a couple of years (it's a wonderful place) but I'm usually wary when I'm in Mississippi, Alabama, or visiting my relatives in Tennessee. They're white and I trust the whites a lot less than people of color when I'm on the street. New Orleans is an exception and most folks here are extremely tolerant of everything (I wish they weren't about smoking).
It is impossible to find decent work though so I plan on going to Washington. I've been to Oregon and there are more opportunities in Seattle/Tacoma than all over Oregon. I support Gay rights, but mainly other people's choices are their business not mine. Marriage is their choice and I support that.
anonymoose & squirrel
C'mon down (Or up, as the case may be).
We are very laidback in general in Washington State (well, at least, in the Seattle-Everett-Tacoma area.. things get a bit dicier in the "flyover country" counties in the eastern half of the state, on the other side of the Cascade Curtain. But hardly anybody chooses to live there anyway).
Part of the resentment in the hinterlands probably stems from the fact that Seattle is big. And rich. And liberal. And the rest of the state, isn't.
In the Deep South, if you throw a rock in any direction, you hit a Southern Baptist Church. Here, in Seattle, if you throw a rock in any direction, you hit an espresso place.
Contrary to popular belief, it really doesn't rain more here than in other cities. We actually get less rain per year than many other places. It just occurs more frequently. We learn to ignore it after a while, unless it's particularly heavy or hard-driving. Lots of us don't even own an umbrella.
If you've never been here, take the Boeing Everett Plant Tour, see the Pioneer Square Underground Tour, ride the DUCKS (DUKWs), visit the Space Needle (of course), downtown Seattle, Westlake Center, Seattle Center, the Monorail (a toy), the Seattle waterfront, Ivars Restaurant (go for the cedar-plank baked salmon). If the weather is nice, take the ferry to Bainbridge Iisland and back and bask in sunshine on the upper deck while keeping an eye out for seals and breaching orca whales.
Also, bring your passport. Vancouver, Canada is two hours away and absolutely amazing.

"Seattle International Rain Festival. January 1st - December 21st"
I was raised in Seattle but have only lived there 2 out of the last 39 years. (We originally left in 1973 when Boeing was on a downward spiral & the job market was lousy.) At age 65, I still considered mysef a Seattlite. "Seattle-Sunset's" suggestions above are some of my own favorites. I'd also add: go walking thru the University of Washington Arboretum, head over to the Olympic Penisula and drive up Hwy 101. Visit Port Townsend. Take the Black Ball ferry from Anacortes over to Victoria, BC especially in the summer when all the lamposts in the harbor have gorgeous flower baskets.
I am SO proud of the many people in my home state for casting their vote to assure equality & justice for everyone when it comes to getting married to the person they love!
"Seattle-Sunset's" right about the rain. It doesn't really rain tho it just drizzles for days on end. Just throw on a jacket and go. I loved living there for the most part. I didn't like the cold so moved back south. I miss the amazing people there.
Come on over, Wa is a great state with good people. Be sure to visit the Olympic Peninsula..one of the most beautiful places in the west.
Awesome, congratulations to all!

Thank you, Meryl. I love this picture...it's so beautiful.

Although i do mostly align with the Conservatives. I don't agree with all of it. Just the sane parts.
But i do want to say this before you all collapse me. I live in Washington State and voted for this. (also for legalization ;). My sister will be getting married soon to another great female. I just wanted to say Congrats to them, the two guys in the photo and all the other LBGT partners out there on your long fought Victory.
@jonnymoses0 You're welcome to hang around here. Just don't call people names, etc. Mama said play nice.
Ummm 7 years ago a gay magazine voted Dallas the best place to live for gays in the entire country. Yes, even over San Fran. Dallas is the "gayest" city in Texas and has voted blue for the past two elections. I'm not sure these guys actually lived in the city. Our suburbs and rural areas do get a bit more racist and homophobic though.
and there's the pain and suffering of living in Texas in general. Secede already.
Do these guys LOOK like they lived in the city center? I usually say that I'm from Dallas even though I'm actually from Irving (home of Trinity Broadcasting Network).
A little good news goes a long way. Congratulations to this couple.
Cool !!!!!!!!!
I am so incredibly pleased, honored and overwhelmed that I was able to vote for marriage equality in Washington, and overjoyed that it passed. This an amazingly historical day that I am glad I got to see in my lifetime. I wish happiness to all of the couples who are now able to marry, and hope that this right spreads across our country. Having been able to be married legally for 20 years, I can only shake my head that this was something denied others for so very long. It's only the right thing to do.
Love is great. God bless Larry and Randy and their marriage.
This is such a sweet couple. Eleven years together and finally getting to get married. I predict that for the first several years, there won't be many divorces because these couples have known each other for so long before wedding.
Congratulations, guys!!
Nice. Just plain freaking nice.
I just love how it busts the stereotype of what a same sex couple looks like.
