Another year, another international convention on climate change that manages to raise the term 'gridlock' to new heights of unproductivity.
Today in Doha, Qatar, some 200 countries were set to end their 2-week U.N. conference. But they are still there, and still haggling, unable to agree on issues like how to allot more funds to help developing nations cope with climate change, and how to extend the lifetime of the Kyoto Protocol, an existing treaty that is set to expire at the end of the year.
This, mind you, was supposed to be "climate conference lite." The major talks on how to negotiate a global pact to curb greenhouse gas emissions has been put off until 2015.
But is anyone surprised? Not really. The little animation above says it all.

That animation was good, but to be accurate, it should have shown the oceans rising and the ice caps melting around all the dithering countries.

It is the only approach that has a chance of working at all. Given that there is such a concern for climate change, and I agree that there is a need to address the matter, what exactly is being accomplished by flying hundreds or thousands of people to Qatar instead of trying to do this via teleconference of something? How much did these people contribute to the problem by getting on jets and flying there? How many of those jets were private jets?
How much money was spent from all of the countries for these people to be put up for two weeks at facilities that probably cost a little more than the $79.99 special at the local Holiday Inn Express?
Yes, it is a problem that needs to be addressed, but there sure seems to be a lot of hypocrisy happening at the same time.

Well, it is apparent that this Committee needs to take a long vacation. They need to put together a different committee of people who want to work. If they think for a minute that global warming is going to wait until 2015. They've got some more World disasters to look forward to. Maybe next time it'll be their own Country that is affected by this scientific event. If they can wait, then they better pray that the Earth can wait. Another group of people in a committee of sorts that loves to kick that can down the road. They need to become as aware as the rest of the Worlds' citizens. So many people are sleepwalking.

From a local perspective, I believe one of the reasons that global warming is having a hard time gaining traction in the nation's capital is that global warming is actually helping the Baltimore-Washington climate. The general pattern of winter in central Maryland was temperatures in the low to mid 40's during the day and high teens to low 20's at night, which meant that any snow that was around would change to water during the day and freeze to ice at night, making both morning and evening commutes extremely dangerous. Now that we seem to be having the pattern of high 40's to low 50's during the day and high 20's to low 30's at night, there is much less snow and little to no ice, making the commutes much safer. What about the more frequent and severe storms, you ask? Well, this saying was already "old" in the 1970's: "Don't like the weather in Baltimore? Wait 5 minutes, it will change." So far, those storms are not registering as a bad trade off.
So, you not only have the lobbyists and the campaign contributors pressuring the congressmen, you also have the fact that the current weather is making it easier for the legislators to move around Washington. It could be a very long time before we see any real progress in this issue.
That is just a side benefit the real reason is that big oil is footing the bill for those three martini lunches. Big oil is anxious for the ice to thin so they can drill baby drill!
Another side benefit is a northwest passage.
Just remember big business owns America.(and they have enough money set aside to send their families to some futuristic space camp to live once our planet becomes uninhabitable.)

Except it rarely got below 30 last winter (2011-2012) here in Southern Maryland. What really worried me was that the heat was *too much* for my jalapeños and habanero peppers this past summer, after a 2011 bumper crop. And the resident moles ate all my squash. (sound of stomach growling)
My squash didn't make it either, I might try eggplant or melons.
