The contradictions in party line votes, as presented on last night's show, has and will always be part of our representative democracy. Not because of gerrymandering, but by design! Funny, but in the long list of contradictions (how more people voted for democrats yet there were more republicans elected) Ms. Maddow didn't point out these...
In each of these states more people voted FOR a Republican Governor while voting FOR a Democrat President.
In the national Presidential race, Obama got only 51% of the vote YET he got 332 electoral votes to Romney's 208.
Ms. Maddow also never gave example of just 1 supposedly gerrymandered district. She said they HAD to be there but provided NO example.
When you have large rural areas with few voters and a few very large metropolitan areas with huge number of voters, if the trend of more Democrats in the city and Republicans in the country holds true, you will have many situation just as happened in these states. To correct it would require...gerrymandering! You would have to carve out small areas of large cities and place that geographical areas with a large rural area.
While these certainly is a valid point that using the states districts to apply electoral votes certainly is worthy of discussion and has very valid criticism, all the other stuff, minus examples of the gerrymandering, is useless.
It's fine when we have a representative democracy.
What's not fine is gerrymandering by both sides, and one party, so BUTTHURT IT LOST, is now resorting to tactics a mafia (which is way better qualified) would use. with extortion (fiscal cliff) at the top of the list.
The Electoral College being open to rigging in favor of a particular party is not what our founders intended.
It's not broke, and it doesn't need "fixing" in the manner the Republicans want.
All they are guaranteeing is more Democratic voters coming out to vote in a colossal effort to get them (Republicans) out of office. I'm not normally a mid-term voter..but I am, now. My mission is to vote out Lou Barletta and Pat Toomey.
Don't ever tell anyone they can't do something, they will prove you wrong. This last election should be all anyone needed to know about how well Republican efforts to suppress, obstruct, and misinform worked out.
"Don't ever tell anyone they can't do something, they will prove you wrong"
Very true. Just look at the failed attempts at voter fraud and voter suppression. Look at the long lines. Look at the hours spent in those lines.
Never tell someone that they cannot do something. If it is something they believe they should do... nothing will stand in their way. And, the more the blocks go up... oh, then it's on!
Great post Knobson. :)
