This kind of History is so interesting. When you can actually see all the small businesses flourishing. Shopping local is one of the keys to sustaining our cities.
I just noticed something else on the map...Satan's mile? Hmmm! what's that all about?
Haha! On the second map there's West 22nd Street - The Street of Whores. That's fabulous.
I'm a huge civil engineering and city planning geek. I love this kind of stuff.
In D.C. that is K street.
Sure, you are. You may want to clean up your language around here, there are ladies present.
I recommend "Sin in the Second City: Madams, Ministers, Playboys, and the Battle for America's Soul" by Karen Abbott. It's a great book about life in Chicago's Levee district during the same time period.
I am trying, but I am a visusual person. I am not getting why this post is posted. too late!
Then you take it to the next level, and Google some of the places on the map, such as "Andy Craig's Tivoli"..

From chicagocrimescenes (dot) blogspot (dot) com, December 2008. Fascinating maps.
It's, shall we say, enhanced reality. Locations are inexact, establishments from disparate eras are shown together, there's never even been a 19th Street east of State, and lots of other things. So take it for character rather than historic accuracy.
