The hearse carrying the body of 6-year-old Jack Pinto in Newtown, Connecticut.
Today's edition of quick hits:
* Funerals for Noah Pozner and Jack Pinto: "With tears and hugs, a grief-rocked Connecticut town said farewell Monday to the first of its slain children: two 6-year-olds being buried in unbearably small coffins on a cold, gray day."
* Connecticut's congressional delegation will hold a vigil in about a half-hour in the Kennedy Caucus Room of the Russell Senate Office Building. The vigil will be live streamed.
* The parties appear to be inching closer to a fiscal deal. More on this in the morning.
* Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suffered a concussion over the weekend after fainting and striking her head, part of a stomach virus that left her dehydrated. Clinton will miss this week's hearings on the Benghazi attack, but deputy secretaries of state will testify on her behalf.
* An Oklahoma high school student was arrested over the weekend on charges that he was plotting to carry out a shooting and bombing massacre at his school.
* A Los Angeles man was arrested over the weekend after comments he made threatening to conduct shootings at multiple area elementary schools.
* An Indiana man, equipped with a 47 gun arsenal, was arrested over the weekend after threatening to kill children at a local elementary school.
* North Korea's dud: "The North Korean satellite launched into space last week is out of control and most likely dead, astronomers reported Monday."
* Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) is apparently under investigation by the House Ethics Committee over possible violation of House rules, though details remain sketchy.
* A White House first: "U.S. Marine Corps captain Matthew Phelps asked, and his partner Ben Schock said yes. On Saturday night, Phelps was photographed getting down on one knee in what is believed to be the first same-sex marriage proposal ever made in the White House."
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

On the spending side, the Democrats’ headline concession will be accepting chained-CPI, which is to say, accepting a cut to Social Security benefits. Beyond that, the negotiators will agree to targets for spending cuts. Expect the final number here, too, to be in the neighborhood of $1 trillion, but also expect it to lack many specifics. Whether the cuts come from Medicare or Medicaid, whether they include raising the Medicare age, and many of the other contentious issues in the talks will be left up to Congress.
THIS IS WORSE THAN NO DEAL. GOD DAMN YOU OBAMA TO HELL IF YOU TAKE THIS CRAP YOU SPINELESS P.O.S.!!!!!!!!!
Congratulations to Mr. Phelps and Mr. Schock may their union be a long and happy one.
It's nice to have something good to think about it has been a long weekend

Yea, gay men proposing in the White house! What a pleasure to see that!!!
In your face NOM bitchez! Take your entropy with you, you miserable mother-feckers..

Just sit back and enjoy the schadenfreude
Trollop isn't a troll and very often posts what I am thinking so I don't have to bother posting. Such as Trollop's post above.
Regarding gun laws.
The best defense against the horrible event of last week is to hold the owner of the gun equally responsible for a crime committed with their weapon. A national law would force gun owners to secure their weapons and perhaps not make their stock of killing machines public knowledge. Further, holding the gun owner responsible forces gun advocates to actually take this responsibility. Rights come with responsibilities. Own a gun, own 100 guns, but they should be your legal responsibility. Given the emotional struggles of the perpetrator last week, the owner of the guns should have had them locked up securely not accessible to anyone, especially her son.
She paid for that failure with her life--but thanks for bitching.
Did anyone else see the "Richard Engel missing in Syria" on Breitbart.com? I know, I know...extremely unreliable, but if there is a grain of truth to this story then I would hope we hear something soon. Don't see this story anywhere else really, but you can never be to sure, especially with someone who goes as in depth as Richard...
Great to see the DOD and Ag Departments are off the hook, NOT. When the hell are they going to be asked to give a little on spending? The Ag Department is particularly galling--paying farmers not to farm.
Hawaii Democratic Senator Daniel Inouye, 88, has died.
His last word was "Aloha"
Ron Byers: I was not bitching. I was posing the best possible solution to f-ups who think they should have a mini arsenal in their home. Please, regale us all with your solutions to this problem. Love to hear them.
RIP Inouye.
So if I got this right, based on what Rachel just said on the show, the Bush administration wants to make tax cuts for the wealthy permanent but they're okay with allowing gun restrictions to expire and never be brought up again.
Doesn't that just cream your corn?
Instead of going after the guns, which will be nearly impossible, #taxtheammo. The .223 and 7.62x39 rounds and the like, tax to $500 a round. Heavy fines and jail time for black market selling. Similar for semi-auto handgun ammo. If one wants to shoot at an approved gun range, create a system that allows bullets bought and fired there at much lower cost, but no removing from the premises.
Make it too expensive to contemplate a mass shooting. 30 round magazine, $15,000. Who has that kind of money, and lack of touch with reality to commit such an act? If the stories are accurate, this would have cost upwards of a half million. If we can track the sale of pseudoephedrine, why not ammo?
Aloha Rachel,
I live in Hawaii on The Big Island and thank you for the very nice tribute to Senator Inouye. He was a wonderful man and leader to our state it is a great loss. But it made me crazy every time you pronounced his name it was grossly incorrect!!! It is pronounced "E No Way"
Mahalo!
With Obama in the white house, this country will keep going the way it is.. for four more years of school shootings, middle class becoming the new poverty class and where will those be who are in poverty now? .. healthcare a mess.. and gays now proposing in the white house... that's what happens when there is no God in the white house, schools, workplace. I just hope after these next four years of Obama trying to bring our country to it's knees, that we will be able to recover and Obama doesn't do too much damage. This is starting to look like the time before the flood.... When God decided to start over... in the midst of uncontrollable chaos and hedonistic living. God save us that love you , honor your commandments and honor Jesus on the cross ....
