In China, where few have guns and now even relatively less deadly knives longer than 15 cm require registration and showing a national ID card, what's left to do when society continues to produce deranged individuals who want to attack innocent school children?
Among the responses to the 2010 spate of horrific school attacks in China was the distribution of odd restraining devices pictured above.
Other measures are being put in place. In Jiangsu province, local police have helped schools set up "campus security team" composed of 70 security guards with batons and pepper spray. Police in Beijing have distributed "forks", long poles with semi-circular prongs that security guards could use to fight assailants. In Changsha, capital of central Hunan province, parents formed vigilante teams to patrol local elementary schools.
Some of the language about defending schools is familiar even if the specifics don't quite align with American ideas.
Reporting from Beijing — All of 110 pounds, security guard Chen Xiu might not pack much heft, but he says no knife-wielding attackers will get past the red iron gate where he watches over an elementary school in downtown Beijing.
"If they come in here, I'm ready to beat them up," said Chen, 49, pumping the air with a bare fist. "You have to be brave to take on criminals."
So far, however, I've not heard anyone propose personal bodyguards for children. "A businessman in southern China was reported to have hired a well-known kung fu master to protect his 6-year-old daughter."

I think this is important especially when you are confronting the argument that we need more guns and more people need to be armed.
there is a lot of room between doing nothing and shooting someone. Lethal force is not the only answer
now those poles with forks seem interesting, maybe good for those crazy types welding knifes, machetes etc...
However, those would have done nothing. but at lease they are trying to get a head of the problem, which there just maybe no way of getting out in front of it again.

American arms are and have been used to kill civilians including many innocent children in a "war on terror" in Afganistan and Pakistan, outside of battle areas. Drones have made this "easier", unfortunately.
There should be sympathy and condolence for them, too.
Banning knives and hiring personal bodyguards for 6 year olds is where this is heading if everyone continues to see that gun control is the answer to these tragic attacks. The answers lie in understanding what causes these individuals to act in such violent manner towards innocent individuals.
A handful of deranged individuals should not cause us to alter so many things. A handful of people should not cause us to ban guns, or knives, or the next weapon of choice. We recognize in other ares that we will not have perfect success (DUI deaths for example) but we don't ban the instruments, we work to prevent the BEHAVIOR.
It is human BEHAVIOR that has to be addressed, not inanimate objects.
(That said, gun control should be a part of the conversation but so many are making it the ONLY focus of dialog and see guns and not individual BEHAVIOR as the problem.)
Whatever the final efforts, the dialog has to be civil, cordial, considerate, cooperative, etc...and above all, produce results.
@RobDon, there are lots of other "instruments" we ban. Private individuals cannot own chemical weapons, bombs, nuclear devices. They are not allowed to take an unapproved vehicle out on the roads, even if they assume liability for damage done and lives lost. Of course we should work on behaviors. We must also work on removing the market for objects that allow one deranged individual to engage in mass-scale violence.
Comparable to drunk driving...we do not ban cars when someone kills others by driving while intoxicated...we try to find those who abuse before they drive and educate them to avoid driving or we take away the privilege to drive. Some people have no business owning or driving a vehicle because of their addictive behavior for substance abuse. Perhaps similar laws could be applied to mentally ill and exposure to guns.
