Come on Rachel, it is time for a bit of Aristotle. The Tea Party/Mackinac Center believes they know this ancient man. Paint me a more beautiful and realistic picture of this racist. And not leave out his murderous student, Alexander The Great for me. And pleases do not forget the many Alexandrian Cities of Libraries and Learning. And what made the most difference. . slavery or learning
Here is a little secret.
Some people actually have been known to run in fear from mean-old-Ms-truthful Rachel.. And truth is, if I were to ever meet her in a pub. Yes, even I, a big muscularly man, could be a bit intimated. You see she has a power bigger than mere muscles called Reason.
Pop Quiz :
Who said this? And in what year ?? The correct language in which the utterance occurred should add 50 points bonus.
* Give me a lever of correct length and a proper pivot point, plus a good place of footing, and I can Move the World.* No ! Not Monty Python., try again.
hello ?
I believe that was Chumley the Walrus Tennessee Tuxedos' friend.
Archimedes, and I only resorted to Google to check my answer; I would've offered it in pre-Internet days, but not without the certainty.
Now your vocabulary word for that smear you did on Aristotle is P-R-E-S-E-N-T-I-S-M. That's the term for the imposition of present-day values upon historical events.
The "democracy" we celebrate among the ancient Greeks in Athens was limited to men, and, gasp, they owned slaves...
As did some of our own Founding Fathers...
Posting this here for lack of a better place:
Rachel, you are the best. And we love you madly (us old guys, that is — hope you don't mind).
But I am old enough to remember the Watergate hearings in 1973-4. I was 27. And I remember that a journalist asked Daniel Inouye (he was one of the six members of the Watergate Committee as you know) how to pronounce his name. He replied, "It's just like 'in NO way' ", stressing the "no", he said, laughing.
In the news today: California Employee Pension "CALPERS" has been investmented in a "holding company" that in turn owns a firearms manufacturer that produces rifles similar to the one used in the Newtown shooting last week. Now the State of CA is embarassed and is moving quickly to divest itself of this holding. The questions to ask are: Who are the advisors to "CALPERS"? Believe one is PIMCO, a nationally recognized investment company. Another question is: Shouldn't there be better oversight of public pension funds nationally, ie transparency about their investments? For instance, who are the advisors to the pension funds for Federal employees... and who is holding them responsible for making appropriate investments.
Why do you need a gun ?? Who do you fear ?
Hi Rachel, You're my hero! Thanks for all you do. Now, just a teeny correction. Representative Mazie Hirona is Hawaii's Senator-elect not Tulsie Gabbard who was just elected to the House. Colleen Hanabusa (Hah nah boo sa) was Senator Inouye's personal pick for the Senate but she still needs to be confirmed by the Democratic party & selected by the Gov. Probably a shoo-in but ya never know.
Both Mazie & Colleen have worked with him for years in various capacities and will be strong & effective legislators, particularly Mazie. IMO he has trained them well, but I guess we'll see. His loss is indeed tragic, what a great & humble man he was.
Thanks & Happy Holidays!
Love, love, love your show - you're awesome!
Mazie Hirona - Senator-elect from Hawaii
Tulsie Gabbard - Representative-elect (taking Mazie's place)
Colleen Hanabusa (Hah nah boo sa) Senator Inouye's choice, to be selected with two others by the Democratic party & Gov. selected.
Thanks for being you - a National Treasure. :-)
