Looks like the eagle video may have been staged using a falconer's trained eagle and a doll/dummy for the distance shots. Golden Eagles are extremely rare in the Montreal area and the movements of the eagle during the supposed capture are wrong for a bird trying to lift a heavy prey. The toddler probably weighs at least 20 pounds; a Golden Eagle may be able to lift 15 pounds, although that would be exceptional. It's a shame that someone is giving these magnificent birds a bad rap. Now if it was a small dog or cat being attacked, it would certainly be possible.
Fakery didn't immediately occur to me but this did: humans - especially urbanized humans simply don't think of nature as dangerous or themselves as prey. Eagles don't think that way.
I don't know if I would leap to the conclusion that this was faked. Extremely rare is not the same as non-existent and it is clear the bird couldn't generate enough lift to make off with the toddler. I think we need more details.
You are right about cats and small dogs. A big bird took one of our neighbor's cats last winter. You could see the evidence in the snow. I couldn't tell if it was a owl or an eagle but I saw the cat tracks in the snow right up to where it was taken in a large disturbed patch of snow.

Within the last year we had an incident in Missoula, MT (covered by the Missoulian newspaper and local TV news station KPAX) in which a bald eagle picked up a fawn and attempted to lift the fawn into its nest. The eagle almost succeeded but then dropped the fawn on a power line cutting power to all of East Missoula, MT.
Now, as disturbing as this is, it gives me another GREAT IDEA!
We secretly breed and train entire FLOCKS of these birds to super size, big enough to swoop in and carry off nutbag politicians, preachers, North Korean Architects, certain really annoying celebrities and other malefactors... to later be dropped from a great height into various remote locations.

As the Newtown murders were ongoing the first person I wanted to contact was VP Joe Biden! I love Obama, but Obama plays it too safe sometimes. VP Biden will commit himself heart and soul to this venture.
It WILL be his most memorable work! So on last Friday I wrote a letter to VP Biden at the White house NOT President Obama as I felt Biden would be really paying attention to this massacre. Biden is such a good man. I love this dude!

Given how he lost his wife and little girl in a tragic accident, things like this must kill him. I agree that he's a great one to head up the Whitehouse strategy team.
If you think for a second that any of the many times Joe appeared to go off message and get out ahead of Obama on an issue weren't carefully planned and calculated occurrences instigated by the White House to test and manipulate public opinion, and prepare the way for the president to act, you're fooling yourself.

I think Larry is right. I would NEVER sit my baby in the grass that far away from me, and if an eagle had tried to carry it away, I would be hugging it close to me after such a horrible thing happened.

Perhaps the thing I am most surprised about this AM is that SS is being included in the "cliff" talks. NO WAY!!! Why are seniors the first to be tossed under the bus once again? the 1.7% raise I got for 2013 amounted to $13.00. Everything else has gone up far beyond this increase. Now they (Republicans) want to reduce our benefits even further.

If the eagle was handled, and I think it was by how it acted while in flight. I hope they go after the ower of the eagle for putting a child's life in danger. That kid could had broke his neck. Oh a fake. Good.
