"The last thing I want to say," Kelsey began, as reporters scrambled to turn their tape recorders back on Tuesday night, "is I'm really, really lucky, because I'm going to get on an eight-hour bus ride, and I'm going to arrive in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and I'm going to walk into my house, and I'm going to walk upstairs, and I'm going to walk into two pink rooms with a 5-year-old and a 4-year-old laying in that pink room, with a bunch of teddy bears laying in that room.
"And I'm going to give them the biggest hug and the biggest kiss I've ever given them. And there's 20 families in Newtown, Conn., that are walking into a pink room with a bunch of teddy bears with nobody laying in those beds," he said. "And it's tragic."
No one in the room knew that was coming, nor the call to action that came next. The only thing that was certain was that Kelsey's voice grew stronger the longer he went on.
"I know this microphone is powerful right now because we're playing the (seventh)-best team in the country. I'm not going to have a microphone like this the rest of the year, maybe the rest of my life. And I'm going to be an agent of change with the 13 young men I get to coach every day and the two little girls that I get to raise. ...
"But," he said, "we've got to change."
Producer Mike sent over the video above, and noted that Boeheim went for it again today.

Way to go coach values is good word to use we asa country need to get back to values . ohh i remember the same values our truely honored preaches and like billy graham , pat robertson , charles stanley and many many other said on election day . Unfornataly my values lost election . My conservative party witch votes for life , and values life and actully belives in god instead of denying god on convention floor 3 times . one last thing if you ever know god from bible you would understand god loves everyone , and wants everyone to be united together . The media divides us with it own selfish reasons . Peole must not read bible in a legalist way and media here tells you things by way of a legalist .
Sigh, that's the problem with you Republicans, lawbaker, you are always pining for a world that never was! Leave it to Beaver was a fantasy, it wasn't reality - but too many of you can't figure that out!!!
I always love men with real balls (not that foot- or basket- type) and these two coaches have them.
Why aren't more sports "heroes" speaking out? Or are their balls just the pigskin type?
It is definitely time to make a serious move on gun control but no one's looking at 2 major sources of validating these actions: Television shows and video games.
Has anyone compared the amount and type of violence that the American public is subjected to every night and when playing video games with the amount of actual violence and murders that occur in our societies and what the motivations are. These contributors to these violence have been looked over and buried by the obvious - Why? We definitely need to limit the assault weapons, but the guns can not fire themselves without motivation. What's in the minds of many that commit these acts? Count the number of TV shows and movies that sensationalize murder and killing, and the number video games that are based on direct killing and elimination of life for scores and you can find your answer. Does the deranged mind have a chance?
If there is an opportunity to give these ideas some press please do all you can to make it happen.
One study after the other shows no causation/validation but still this call keeps popping up.
The movies and the games are wildly popular world wide but the only place with the mass murders is the place with the screwy gun laws.
So now we have another tragedy and not one shred of evidence that the man who did this watched the movies or played the games but there it is again.
This seems to be the ultimate red herring, it crops up from both ends of the political spectrum as an "obvious" point that fails when tested by what actually happens in reality.
I wonder what Bob Costas is thinking, now that EVERYONE is talking about gun control. (Remember way back to Dec. 2 when he was excoriated for speaking his mind on TV about something that should be only whispered in private?)
In a very real sense, I think, Costas doing that back then has made it easier for coaches and players to speak up. And good for Coach Kelsey for voicing his opinion.
The announcement of an announcement to come by the NRA who subsequently said they had a contribution is a joke!! The NRA is so predictable they'll most likely offer up free weapons training for school administrators that want it. In line with what the few mentally challenged senators who think went to college to become teachers to learn to shoot a gun. I for one don't want inexperienced teachers hopped up on adrenaline accidentally shooting my kids because heaven forbid they find themselves in that that horrific situation and they heard a noise coming from behind a desk!! We need common sense gun control. Those of us who have served in the military who have shot assault weapons know their purpose. All the wannabes who never dawned a uniform are the ones clinging to they're "right" to have 30+ round magazines because they don't want to be inconvenienced by reloading their clips. We need to close the gun show loop hole which coincidentally will slow down the killing in Mexico as all they're illegal guns come from the US. further we need to fund mental health centers to the levels they were funded before it became the easy budget cut for states.
All La Pierre will probably say is that NRA is going to donate some money to mental health organizations. I will fall off my chair if he says anything substantial!!
As an outsider looking in the US has to stop skirting around the issues. Stop blaming social problems, video games, TV and film violence. The rest of the world has ALL those influences too, we just don't blame them for a crazy armed nut murdering innocent people. We have crazed nuts too, and they murder too. But not in such large scale because they don't have semi automatic high powered assault weapons. They are not used for sport, not used to hunt and not used to protect your home from a burglar.
I watched this man take a stand against the proliferation of guns of mass extinction and marveled at his decency and command of the English language. He stand taller than every right-winged TEA-Republican in the house and Senate and governor's like Rick Perry of Texas. He is a phenomenal example of what America needs in the house and Senate. Coach Pat Kelsey is to be commended!
