Good Solstice Morning, y'all. As we note, we are all still here and nobody has raptured up to heaven or apocalypsed down to hell or fallen over a fiscal cliff...so could we please grow up and cease this nonsense?
As previously stated, there is no fiscal cliff, actually. If Congress goes home without any deal, our tax rates will all return to the same ones we paid during the Clinton Administration - when, by the way, we had a booming economy, low unemployment and a surplus in the Treasury. The DoD would get a budget cut - which Secretary Panetta has stated publicly he is OK with having. Some other programs and Cabinet Departments would also have cuts - which can be rejiggered at a later time in another budget. What is the big deal, people?

Huh... 100,000 petition signers? So all it takes for Obama to address banning military style assault weapons so only HIS military can use them is less than .09% of the population to sign an online petition? I guess the minority really does dictate policy.

You watched to much TV, here is a clue people didn't rise up during the robber baron era in fact they learned their lesson from a little up rising called the war between the states, the side that did the up rising lost.
I saw the congressman this morning on ‘Morning Joe’
defending 'Assault Weapons'. Might I first suggest we stop talking about
'Assault Weapons' and call them what they are...semi-automatic rifles. What is
commonly referred to as an ‘Assault Weapon’ is simply a semi-automatic rifle
with certain pieces of what the industry calls ‘furniture’ (bling)
installed…because some genius decided that a pistol grip and a collapsing stock
somehow make a rifle more lethal. They do not. If the rifle has a full wooden
stock, it still has the same rate of fire as the ‘Assault Weapon’ version.
While congress will be debating this issue (hopefully), why
can’t we do something RIGHT NOW? The National Firearms Act of 1934 classified
several items, including fully automatic rifles, as Title II weapons, which
require a Federal Firearms License (FFL) to purchase (yes, people do own fully
automatic rifles, but somehow they are never available to these mass
murderers). If I understand things correctly, a joint resolution could be used
to simply re-classify ALL semi-automatic rifles as Title II weapons, making
them much more difficult to purchase. A local gun dealer tried to sell me a
silencer for my hunting rifle, which I declined (back in 1934 Congress decided
that A SILENCER is a device more lethal than a semi-automatic rifle, thus
classifying silencers as Title II), but he explained the FFL process to me like
this: you select your item, purchase it, and apply for the license, which costs
$200.00. You then go home without your item, while the Federal Government
conducts an exhaustive background check (it takes at least 3 months). If you
pass the check, you come back to the gun shop, pick up your license and your
item, and go home. If you fail the background check, you still own the item,
but you can’t have it. You get no money back, and the item is destroyed. If this process is correct, then I would
venture a guess that a lot less semi-automatics would be sold, and would be in
the hands of responsible owners. I also understand that Title II classification
means that the items can’t be openly displayed in stores.
I am a gun owner who does not own a semi-auto, but can see
peaceful uses for them: pest control (pests like coyotes and feral hogs),
personal protection in rural areas (there are parts of this country where your
closest neighbor could be miles away), as well as competitive shooting. There
are also states that allow the use of semi-automatic rifles as legal hunting
rifles. While we may not agree ultimately on the fate of these weapons, would
not immediate and strict regulation be mutually beneficial to both sides of the
issue? The beauty of this simple solution is that all of the paper work,
agencies, and bureaucracy are already in place, it simply re-classifies these
weapons.
Where are the republican voices in congress condemning the shootings and calling for responsible common sense gun laws? What happened to all of those convenient post-election public sightings of Mitt Romney? Where have the 2016 GOP hopefuls of Jeb, Jindal, Rubio, Ryan and others mysteriously vanished to in the past week?
