President Obama is cutting his vacation short today.
The shooter who killed firefighters in upstate New York used the same kind of gun as the Sandy Hook shooter.
We may find out who the new Senator from Hawaii is today.
Here's who won't be running for Sen. Kerry's seat in Massachusetts: Ted Kennedy, Jr. and Ben Affleck.
Fmr. Pres Bush 41 is still in the hospital.
Tagg Romney on his dad: "He wanted to be president less than anyone I've met in my life."

President Obama is cutting his vacation short today.
Really? What's the point? Unless Boehner called him about that epiphany he had about Obama winning the last election, I don't see why Obama should come back before the new year.
He's going to be working with Senate Democrats to come up with a plan that will pass there first, before going to the House, since starting with the House failed. Coming back early also has the added benefit of preventing Republicans from credibly arguing that the President is more interested in a vacation than a practicable solution, ignoring their own inertia on the issue.
food stamp taker banned, re-reg of multiple accounter cellarppl.
Pres. Obama needs to get his message out there. People think it is only him that wants to cut Social Security, Medicare and preserve the tax shelters for Big Business. People have no idea that it is the GOP that demand this.
Yes, Tagg, your father never wanted to be president. And the grapes in the White House are sour, anyway.
By her several comments during the campaign, I suspect that it was Ann who really reaaaally wanted to occupy
Versaillesthe White House. If only to use that "let them eat cake" quote from another Patrician. (Say, what ever happened to Marie, any way?)
Let us drop the Romney family - every last one of 'em! - from our collective memories. Their 15 minutes ended on November 6 and they can all go off somewhere expensive and secluded and grouse all they want to...to each other. I, for one, do not want to hear any more goddam sour grapes, stages of grieving or other fantasy bullpucky! FANSWAT!
Romney - is not anyone a young kid can look up to. In sports they tell you to lose with dignity; A sore loser can't do that-he was a man that could have anything in his life. The one thing he wanted most the Presidency he couldn't buy and now says he really didn't want it. Tagg you are your fathers son!!
I think Tagg was trying to say that Mitt is too modest to be president. He never wanted all the attention that comes with the job but ran for the good of the country.
They are still trying to convince us that he's human.
Why does the media publish such self-serving lies??
The Romney apple does not fall far from the tree.
I keep seeing a commercial on television for a product named TagAway, I wonder if there is a message there ? Or, if it is a product that really can work !
Wait, so the Romneys wasted all that money just to put on a show to pretend that they wanted to occupy the white house? Really?
Nukes Don’t Kill People, People Do
The leaders of NRA have made it clear that they oppose banning semi-automatic weapons. In their support of Farmer in Farmer v. Higgins, they opposed the banning of fully automatic weapons as well. One has to wonder where they would draw the line, if any, for the banning of weapons of any kind, say bazookas, biological, chemical or small nuclear weapons. Do they support governmental controlled access to any of these weapons? Would they argue that a determined individual or terrorist group could probably acquire any of these weapons to commit mass murder? Thus, attempts to control access are essentially futile, and that individual possession of these materials would not produce any greater threat than already exists. Thus, “the only way to stop a bad guy with a nuke is with a good guy with a nuke.” I don’t feel any safer if we replace 'nuke' with 'machine gun, or with 'semi-automatic weapon'. I’m not sure that if everyone were packing, I’d feel safer replacing 'nuke' with 'gun'.
I agree. If it's our fundamental right to bear arms, why can't I have a tank, or nuclear weapons? I mean, they don't hurt anyone unless I fire them. So I guess you'll all just have to pray I don't go batsh!t crazy and fire them. There, feel safer?
I can't believe it just occurred to me that this argument also loses all credibility when applied to international situations. Why are we trying so hard to stop Iran from making nuclear weapons? They're not going to hurt anyone unless they're fired, right? ;)
Gun Insurance - both the NRA (gun lobby) and the AARP (insurance lobby) should be willing to get behind this idea. If a gun owner had to pay a monthly fee to insure each weapon they'd be less likely to own so many they'd fail to notice when a bushmaster AR-15 goes missing.
And like with cars and illegal immigrants, people would avoid giving the police a reason to come to their house or stop them in public and ask to see their "proof of gun insurance".
I know about ten young guys who would have to reduce their inventory because they wouldn't be able to justify the cost of insurance to their girlfriends.
And the cost of the insurance should be set by how many rounds it can fire at once.I think $10 per month for "normal" guns (10 rounds or less) $30 per month for 30 rounds, $100 per month for 100 rounds, etc. The insurance would cover the damage done by the shooter.
NYT 12/26 article on College no longer being a reliable pathway to prosperity for low income and working class youth; immigrants and minorities. And worst, that it is becoming more than ever, in recent American times, a priviledge of the wealthy, a distinct advantage and now, as perhaps never before, a driver of the widening and deepening inequality thats quietly and persistently tearing at the fabric of the republic. Amazing how well turning education funding over to interloping bankers worked... for the banks ... and how amazingly it has sucked for the rest of us... amazing!!
I’m sure Republicans have forgotten some of the words to Auld Lang Syne. So, to be helpful, I’ve jotted down a few verses that Rubublicans can sing while popping the corks:
Republican Auld Lang Syne
Should auld acquaintance be forgot
I can’t hear their little screams
My 2nd Amendment trumps their right
To have their little dreams
On radio Rush Limbaugh barks
And tells us what we ought
That saves us all from having now
Even one tiny little thought
I signed a pledge to raise no tax
To the middle class I’m blind
I really now should pull my head
From right out of my fat behind.
Romney spent 8 years running for a job he didn't want?
Good thing he didn't get it then.
rachel i love it when u brighten my day with news of the romney debacle!
I thought I was the only one who saw the old Aesop fable of the Fox and the Grapes, sour said the fox. Sour Grapes!
God Bless the first responders!! Now they don't only need to deal with Fires but being fired upon. Same gun as Newtown, CT. What will the NRA suggest, let's guard our firemen with police, better yet-let's give fireman guns!! Let's become a police state - isn't that what the right/tea party fears the most!! and that is exactly what the NRA is suggesting. The only way to stop a bDa guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun - who is the bad guy with the gun!!
Rachel congratulations on your Spoken Word Grammy Nomination!!
IF this convicted felon bought his guns at a gun show (and I am saying IF because we don't know yet how he got his guns). Will the NRA finally support closing that background check loop hole?
They are adamant that new laws won't change anything but IF this turns out to be the case then maybe it would have been different.
It seems the 'pro-gun' lobby has turned their 'sights' on Piers Morgan..! I am no fan of his (to say the least) but when someone makes sense - regardless of who they are - its only fair to concede it !
Someone has already suggested a 'Licence' fee for each gun - I would go much further and perhaps help to resolve some of the Fiscal problems the US has.
Ban all automatic and semi automatic guns as well as the ridiculous ammunition clips that have no pissible legal use outside of gun clubs. Then TAX every gun ANNUALLY - much the same as a car ! It would reduce the number of guns, record their owners and bring in a whole lot of revenue bot for federal and State needs. If your caught without an unlicenced vehicle it can be impounded - why not your GUN ? Lastly - an even HIGHER tax on ALL ammunition - only gun clubs could claim a relief of course ! The shooting HAS to stop !
The Second Amendment guarantees citizens the right to keep and bear arms. It doesn't guarantee that they get to do so at no cost. We don't GIVE people guns, we (supposedly) require that they purchase them. So why not require that people pay for a license for each one?
We license and register cars. Why not guns?
I have a policeman friend who argues that any restriction of guns will be ignored by criminals and crazy people, so why saddle 'good guys with guns' with more restrictions? My answer to his argument is this: perhaps we should do one of two things. (See if you can spot where the snark starts)
1) Make murder legal. This would save a lot of time and hassle, since we would no longer have to fret about abortion (depending on your point of view), suicide, hunting, mass murders of children, people shooting their significant other during an argument, drunken fight, etc., because they'd no longer be doing anything wrong. Also, with this solution we wouldn't have to do any of the hard work like getting rid of some of the 300 million guns in our country, or tell people that some arms aren't OK to have.
2) Decide that maybe it's time to alter or repeal the second amendment. I have a feeling the forefathers thought it should be OK to own a musket for the militia. Maybe if we just went back to what they intended it would be better. I suggest making everyone serve in the military. I realize it would train them to use guns, but maybe the military is a little better at finding the crazies than the general populace? They've also realized they need to keep the guns away from the soldiers when they're not using them; they know what the suicide rate would be.
A substantial license fee for guns – but with the exemption that you get one musket, free.
Substantial license fee, yes, but also with a need-to-use license (one rarely granted); otherwise only the rich folk will have them.
If we should just shrug our shoulders and say "oh well" when bad guys use guns, and not bother with gun laws, perhaps we shouldn't have traffic laws. I mean, I see people running red lights all the time. If they're going to do it anyway...
But driving isn't your God-given unalienable right. Only having guns is.
The Romney article was great. Might be oversimplifying, but appears the worker/management ratio contrast bwtween the campaigns is a metaphor on the differences between the bases of both parties.
from a linked article ""He was equipped to go to war, kill innocent people," the chief said of a felon who wasn't allowed to possess weapons because of his criminal past. It was not clear how he got them."
so we have a guy who was allowed to plead down the murder of his grandmother committing a new crime with a gun he couldn't legally posses. and Rachel and a bunch of you are trying to criminalize me for owning a semiauto rifle. yeah that makes lots of sense.
if you just want to do some foolish feel good measure.
For a father who didn't want to be President then why did he stay in the running for so long? Oh, maybe he decided that after the 47% comment.
Thanks, Rachel for your updates and I am so happy to know that Richard is safe and well.
Happy New Year to you and your family!
We always knew Romney was just a puppet.
I really hope that as the Repubs 'reverse engineer" the Romney campaign, Rachel's show puts together all the failures and shows how they stem from the 'privatize' mentality of the Republican party.
Maybe if they could just shift their allegiance from Reagan to Eisenhower...
