Alexandria Police Dept.
Tthe booking photo for Sen. Michael Crapo (R-Idaho).
It's extremely rare for a sitting U.S. senator to get arrested for any reason. The only recent example involved former Sen. Larry Craig (R) of Idaho, who had an unfortunate incident in a Minneapolis airport men's room in 2007.
As it turns out, the newest example involves another Republican from Idaho. And while this incident from the weekend isn't quite as bizarre as the Larry Craig story, it's still pretty embarrassing for Sen. Michael Crapo.
Senator Michael D. Crapo of Idaho was arrested early Sunday and charged with driving under the influence in a suburb of Washington, D.C., the authorities said.
Mr. Crapo, a Republican, was pulled over after his vehicle ran a red light, the police in Alexandria said. He failed field sobriety tests and was arrested about 12:45 a.m., said a police spokesman, Jody Donaldson, and then was taken to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond about 5 a.m.
"There was no refusal" to take sobriety tests, Mr. Donaldson said, and "no accident, no injuries."
The legal limit in Virginia for blood alcohol content is 0.08 percent, and Crapo registered a 0.11 percent. Adding insult to injury, the senator was one of the policymakers who helped change the law to mandate a federal 0.08 limit.
Making matters slightly worse, Crapo is a Mormon who has said he abstains from drinking alcohol. Apparently, those claims were untrue.
The 61-year-old senator, who isn't up for re-election until 2016, issued a statement Sunday night: "I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated."

Hypocrite, thy name is republican...
This Holiday Season, I'm just so pleased there are Republicans in power to force their morality on the rest of us.
Funny, I am a republican, and I hope they hang this jerk; he should be expelled from office, I have no sympathy for drunk drivers no matter who they are.
A Mormon huh, It would seem that they follow their religious beliefs about as closely as Christian's do, Incredible, I wonder just what faith of religion Really means to these people ?
Hi Rachel, It will be good to see you back !
Wow who would have thought a lying republican who believes laws are made for other people who aren't as important as he is. Funny how the members of the moral superior party always prove how morals are about others and not themselves, but we know their defenders will be out defending him by pointing fingers everywhere else, its the GOP master plan, when one of theirs gets caught just bring up Clintons BJ.
The right hates Clinton because he actually balanced the budget rather than simply talk about it. Bush lied and even refused to take any oath while requiring his menions to take an oath to him rather than God or Country. You idgits on the right are pro-communists and yet too ignorant to see it.
Right and in other news cliff makes up stories just like he did when he did back in 3rd grade to get himself out of trouble with the teacher. Lied about what cliff? He answered the question pertaining to the case, He was being questioned for his involvement in White Water not who he was getting BJ's from, so reality is the GOP had nothing on him so they made a big deal out of nothing. Really cliff I don't hear you whining about Newt kicking his sick wife out of her bed so he could put his mistress in her spot while whining about Clintons personal life, oh yeah thats right IOKIYAR. As far as the rest of your nonsense, You are confusing GWB with Obama, it was GWB that was a drunk and it was GWB that used coke who then married a pot dealer. DWI is a big deal cliff people are sent to prison for DWI's only ignorant morons with serious drinking problems whine that DWI's are not real crimes. BTW cliff, you just proved me right about the GOP apologist.
The reason Republicans come off as so hypocritical is that they have more to be hypocritical about. Would American society be better if we all acted like Republicans say we should act? Yes, but unfortunately none of us are saints. Democrats are more realistic and look to build people up after a fall because, as any evangelist will tell you, we all have fallen at one time or another. I hope Republicans remember this and be more compassionate when they draft legislation.
First you have to admit that you have fallen to yourself which requires one to look at himself conservatives lack that ability. Instead they look everywhere else to find someone to blame, didn't get the promotion at work it was because a less deserving person who happened to be a minority that took it away from them, got fired it was an illegal that took their job. It is also that lack that keeps them in delusional land, everyone lost when Wall street crashed in 2008 except for the conservative, he won because he is so much smarter then everyone else, except its pure delusions made up to hide the fact that they failed. I used to laugh at how conservatives could whine about theft at the work place then brag about what they managed to take from the job or whine about how lazy someone else was in one breath and in the next brag about paying someone to punch his time ticket off the clock because he went home before his shift ended.
Cliff,
you would do well to remember that the hypocrites who went after Clinton, were doing the very same things themselves. newt gingrich, who led the charge, and was married at the time, was having his own affair. the "Clinton impeachment" is just another example of repubs hating democrats so much, that they think the same standards do not apply to them. repubs wanted every blow-by-blow during the impeachment of Clinton TRYING TO EMBARASS HIM, and make the american people turn against him, BUT IT BACKFIRED.
were it not for Larry Flynt (Hustler magazine) who outed bob livingston, (the repub who was going to be the "speaker of the house", if the impeachment against President Clinton was successful) was HAVING HIS OWN AFFAIR.
lets also remember the repub president, H.W. bush who had a longstanding affair with Jennifer Fitzgerald, starting when he was ambassador to china, an affair that lasted throughout his presidency.
LETS BE CLEAR. many presidents have had affairs, along with congressmen, THEY HAVE ALSO LIED ABOUT THEIR AFFAIRS. this was not about President Clinton lying, this was about repubs hypocrisy and wanting to get President Clinton out of office. i am sorry that President Clinton made it so easy for repubs to EXPRESS THEIR HYPOCRISY AND HATRED FOR A POPULAR PRESIDENT.
President Obama does have a drink now and then, i am sure, but those other things you mentioned are part of his past, just as we remember w. bush had a VERY COLORFUL PAST, WHICH ALSO INCLUDED RAPE. much of that was hidden, because of daddy bush, who we now know had his own longstanding affair.
What don't you get cliff? Clinton was brought before congress for his dealings with White water not who he was messing around with in fact Monica wasn't even involved with White water so why did the GOP congress ask questions that had nothing to do with White water criminal activity, it was because they had nothing and they wasted 50 mill on the investigation. Really cliff you just keep digging your hypocrisy hole deeper by insisting that Clinton did anything more then what the republicans were doing themselves. Where is your whines about Newt and the rest of those Greedy Old Perverts, really cliff you can't hold others responsible for their actions when you pretend that your side isn't as bad or worse. All you did cliff was show that IOKIYAR, really cliff you have done nothing else.
I would have held my nose and voted for him.-------------why would you have had to hold your nose?
Oh crap(o).
Another hypocritical, lying, Mormon republican? My faith is shattered.......
Is it my Liberal bias, or is it mostly Republicans who live- and 'die' - by the "Do as I say, not do as it do" meme?
I'm thinking of all the "Family Values" politicians who cheat on their wives, and the Pro Life fella who had his girl friend(s) get abortions, and the anti gay ones who get caught in police stings, and have sex with pages, (it is now time to go all Latin on you);- ad infinitum. . .
It is not your liberal bias but their conservative bias. All this behavior you mention is equal opportunity for both parties - it is just handled differently when it is exposed to the public since you can quote Senator Crapo and other Republicans on the subject and follow their legislation. They should just accept the punishment their laws call for and silently fade into the background.
I was so disappointed that no one used the obvious headline: CRAPO SH!T-FACED
I would just love to see...
Lindsey Graham, John McCain, John Barrasso, Eric Cantor or Paul Ryan arrested for a DUI. Wouldn't that be lovely?
No. Drunk or impaired driving is so deadly and selfish that even the prospect of a Republican "leader" getting popped for it is nothing to root for. Finally as a society we seem to be making progress on this, so it's kind of an outlier. I'm not sure Crapo will survive this, and he should be disqualified from public service for endangering innocent people. I lost three friends in high school to a drunk driver, and my older son recently had a friend who killed himself in a one car drunk driving crash. This hits home with many Americans, and we will soon see if conservatives have the backbone they claim they do...
I certainly do not approve of drunk driving at all. I know the first hand results when there has been a drunk driver during two different incidents. I am still living with the after effects of a drunk driver 23 years later.
I loathe the group I stated and would love to see them publically humiliated (that would not include harm to anyone else).
Says the guy falling off his bar stool before getting up and staggering out to his car. Yep good old cliff has nothing to say yet he still has to say it and prove that he has no ideal what he is talking about. Oh and cliff for your information it is already illegal to drive while on drugs so you are just saying that you are ignorant of drug usage as well as ignorant of prescription drugs which are abused more then illegal street drugs ask your idol Rush.
But don't worry, Sweet Baby Jesus, lying in His manger, will absolve you of your sins if you ask Him for forgiveness. Oh, wait
I'd drink if *I* were a republican - a lot.
When Sen. Larry Craig pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for appearing to solicit consensual sex with an adult, Sen. John McCain called upon him to resign.
Some people suspected that McCain, who was then a candidate for the Republican nomination for President, was trying to pander to anti-gay elements within the party. But Sen. McCain said it was a matter of a straightforward principle. He said, "My opinion is that when you plead guilty to a crime, you shouldn't serve [in the Senate]. That's not a moral stand. That's not a holier-than-thou [sic]. It's just a factual situation."
If Sen. Crapo is convicted, it will be interesting to see whether Sen. Straight Talk continues to stand on this principle.
"I am deeply sorry for the actions that resulted in this circumstance. I made a mistake for which I apologize to my family, my Idaho constituents and any others who have put their trust in me. I accept total responsibility and will deal with whatever penalty comes my way in this matter. I will also undertake measures to ensure that this circumstance is never repeated." This is part of the problem, driving under teh influence is more than a "mistake" it can and does cause death and injury. Choices are made to drink and then a choice to drive . http://www.causes.com/causes/808636-every-bottle-or-can-alcohol-advisement/actions/1719646
