Following up on a piece from this morning, the House Republican leadership's decision not to hold a vote on Hurricane Sandy relief aid continues to draw widespread condemnations, and this afternoon, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) didn't hold back.
For those who can't watch clips online, Christie said, among other things, "There's only one group to blame for the continued suffering of these innocent victims: the House majority, and their Speaker, John Boehner." The governor added that House Republicans acted with "callous indifference" to the people of New Jersey, and called Congress' inaction "disgraceful."
Christie also noted that he called the Speaker's office four times last night, and in each instance, he was unable to speak to Boehner directly. As for why House Republicans failed to act, the governor blamed the "toxic internal politics of the House majority."
It's worth noting, of course, that Christie is hardly alone. President Obama issued a statement calling for immediate House action: "When tragedy strikes, Americans come together to support those in need. I urge Republicans in the House of Representatives to do the same, bring this important request to a vote today, and pass it without delay for our fellow Americans."
Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.), meanwhile, said on Fox News, "[A]nyone from New York and New Jersey who contributes one penny to congressional Republicans is out of their mind because what they did last night to put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans was an absolute disgrace."
Pretty much every politician in New York and New Jersey are making similar comments today.
For his part, Boehner has said he's willing to push an aid package for Sandy victims in the new Congress, though the legislative process will have to start from scratch.

Boehner is a turd.
Watch the news tonight - there are strong rumors that Boehner is going to resign as Speaker.
It's like King finally realized: it's the Confederate Party of America, dedicated to "screwin' them Yankees."
Too bad we can't have a mass arrest and trial of 151 traitors.
I heard that, too. Cantor is wetting himself right now.
Or he's measuring his head for his crown....
Oh I just can't bring myself to post in a public forum what I think he's doing!
For once Christy and I agree on something...Who'da thunk it....
You all can have that phat pos. He's a full on liberal now, so enjoy;)
Maybe (God willing) those 85 Republicans will caucus with the Democrats and elect Nancy Pelosi Speaker - for the good of the country.
It is finally happening, the republican party is disintergrating before our very eyes. they have only themselfs to blame. Good for Christie this is the second time in the past couple of months that he has stood up for what he believes is right. I applaud him and King
@LCares
Or getting a taste of what they have been dishing out to smaller groups...take a good look...maybe this is what it takes to see the plight of teachers etc...or Muslims...huh King...huh Christie
People have been saying for four years that the republican party was through, yet they have ruled what happened with a few exceptions. The sad fact is that most all of congress is owned by corporate sponsors. All representatives and senators should wear suits like NASCAR with all their corporate logos. That way it would be easier to tell who they owe allegiance to. Also you would know where they are going to work when they finish with their government career. We better be careful what we wish for about Boehner getting ousted, I think Cantor would be much worse. When a disaster happens in someone else's district, government relief is unnecessary spending, when it happens in yours it is disaster relief. What republicans mean when they say we need to cut spending is that we need to gut SS and Medicare. Buying another weapon system that is not needed and doesn't work is good spending.
He's only howling cuz its his state. If it was Oh or OR, he would be yelling about freeloaders and boot straps. He's an untrustworthy bully.
In all fairness, Christie has always been he type to stand up for what he believes in and he's always been a plain talker. It makes him an @!$%# is some instances, but he's definitely got will when it counts. As much as I have issues with his social policies, what he did was impressive, and I'm going to say that "Rome wasn't built in a day." I'm optimistic at least for now that Christie will eventually come 'round.
They can't disintegrate fast enough for my taste. What a bunch of cold blooded sharks they are.
A bunch of lying backstabbers, too. Especially Eric Cantor. A House of thieves, that's what we have now.
I wish Christie would become a Democrat or an Independent.
It might be time to create the Democratic-Unionist Party. Christie, the 85 Republicans in the House with brains, anyone else who wants to join the grand coalition against the Confederate traitors. We had a party like that 150 years ago and it's certainly needed now.
What's really going to chap Christie's ass is when the House GOP, with one eye over its shoulder looking at primary challengers in their carefully gerrymandered - and therefore staunchly conservative - districts, votes down the relief bill Boehner brings to the floor.
This is Crime and punishment
Christie's crime of working with Obama and putting New Jersey ahead of politics and the punishment for it. Not to mention that none of the southern Republicans will shed even a crocodile tear for a tragedy in a norther state.
No tears need shed! You live in a coastal area, expect tragedy. Was it just Sandy relief in the bill?
what about the democrats throwing 5 tons of pork into the bill. Here is a partial list:
$150 million for Alaskan fisheries, $2 million to the Smithsonian to repair roofs and $8 million to Homeland Security and the Justice Department to buy cars. And that’s just the start. No, this is not Stimulus Part 2, this is the Hurricane Sandy Relief Bill, rightfully dubbed the “Sandy Scam.”.
As Matt Kibbe pointed out earlier, the Sandy Scam Bill whose total price tag is $60.4 billion, also contains:
•$58.8 million for forest restoration on private land.
•$197 million “to… protect coastal ecosystems and habitat impacted by Hurricane Sandy.”.
•$10.78 billion for public transportation, most of which is allocated to future construction and improvements, not disaster relief.
•$17 billion for wasteful Community Development Block Grants (CDBG), a program that has become notorious for its use as a backdoor earmark program.
So your complaint is that you can't care about helping other people enough to vote on something to bypass other things that you don't like? So compassion comes with an asterisk for you? Again Republicans need to realize that this argument is not going to be seen in their favor. This makes you seem uncaring, out of touch, petty, and anti-American. If you could just listen to someone else besides yourself for 6 seconds you'd realize this is the most idiotic defense a person could come up with (not to mention it's a complete red herring logically speaking).
You do realize that all of these programs are going to assist people in New York and New Jersey and that this is all part of disaster relief, yeah? Congratulations all 4 of the "pork" projects you're upset about....are projects going to accomplish the job that you supposedly say you support. Thanks for admitting that Republicans don't actually care about us North Easterners. I already knew that, but your admitting it just sweetens the deal.
No tears need shed! You live in a coastal area, expect tragedy. Was it just Sandy relief in the bill?
what about the democrats throwing 5 tons of pork into the bill.
First of all, I really take offense at "you live in a coastal area, expect tragedy." It's so easy for you to say "expect tragedy" like people were statistics. That's just callous. When people in middle America lose their homes to tornadoes, I would never say, "You live in tornado alley, expect tragedy." What a thing to say.
I am, however, interested in your numbers and figures. As a matter of fact, I am raising my eyebrows to some of those additional costs (if they're true, or in the context you suggest), though I'm not entirely ready to discredit all of them even at face value, since I consider some of those you mentioned essential. Where did you get your figures? Link/Source please. I'd like to read it over and see if these so-called costs you call Pork Barrel is what it is.
"$2 million to the Smithsonian to repair roofs"
Really? Really?
Because it would be a bad thing to repair the roofs of the Nation's Attic. Do you have any concept of what a national treasure is? Any concept of preserving this great country's history? I'm think 2 mill for roof repair at the Smithsonian is pretty reasonable considering how much roof there is. And it's jobs for the construction industry which use jobs right now. Wow small minded you truly are.
Maria, you expect a Repub like Really to understand the value of a national treasure like the Smithsonian? Or maybe even just forest reforestation? Forget about coastal ecosystems because they obviously have no effect on us whatsoever... you know, because Hurricane Sandy was brought by God to punish the sinful, sinful New Yorkers and those scantily clad ladies from the Jersey Shore.
And guess what, public transportation is NOT important to Repubs because people who care to work should really get their own cars. Eff those commuters. They're all moochers for expecting other people to get them to work for a measley $2.50 on the train, or $7 on the bus. Why, those spoiled commuters.
Mr. Speaker, can we afford to help our own recover from a natural disaster?
"HELL NO, WE CAN'T!!!"
And there it is. What a tool.
I stil fail to see any generosity here beyond his own immediate interests. Did he comment on the GOP holding up disaster relief for Missouri, for example? I'd like to know if he's only know crying out because he and his have been hurt, or if he would have the magnanimity of soul to care about other victims in other places?
That would be the dividing line, in my view, between him and Democrats.
Of course he's fighting for his New Jersey constituents. He works for them. He doesn't work for the people of Missouri. He's a state guy who has gone above and beyond for his people, but who has hit a road block with the federal politicians. I applaud his outspokenness against Boehner's do-nothingness for the Super Storm Sandy disaster. Gov. Christie is not a Republican puppet, and he refuses to keep his mouth shut when it comes to being a champion for the people of New Jersey, Republican or not.
There wasn't anything to get gained by it. He'd have made enemies in his own party, especially troublesome if they are on the federal level and Christie wants to head that direction eventually. His constituency wouldn't have noticed or been impressed, it wasn't their problem. And the party wasn't the mess then that it is now.
In this scenario, there isn't any party leadership to upset. Even something as simple as that is in flux. With the divides in the party, he might make as many friends as he does enemies. And the enemies (ie Boehner) see their power slipping, so they can't really hold a grudge over it.
It's all positives for Christie to speak up now. His constituents love it. National independent voters, who are losing patience with House Repubs, love it. He's vying for a 'maverick,' "I speak truth to power!" narrative.
JJM: Wow. You folks sure demand purity. You want the governor of a different state to be on the record about everything?
or ask all the teachers he laid off there. I bet they are not buying his compassionate outrage.
Why they hell would he stick his neck out for the people of Missouri? It's not his state.
uh, a heart maybe?
"Heart" is nice and all. I appreciate humanity as well as the next human being, but there are practical issues involved in the leading of the state, particularly in the politics of getting funding. Missouri has leaders that are obligated to stick up for their people. Christie would be better saving his neck-sticking for his own state rather than impractically using it on another state that has its own leaders to do that job for them.
At any rate, Christie has no business speaking up for other states when the national discussion doesn't deem it relevant. I didn't vote for Christie in the last election. I didn't even vote for the incumbent he unseated at the time (the guy had a scandal, see...), but it would seem a bit much to expect him to speak up for a state that has no bearing on his.
Let's see how much of this is remembered come the 2014 elections. The teapubs will have another fake issue front and center by the time the elections roll around and the people that vote, will as usual, fall for it. And I somehow think it will be sexual in nature. Be it birth control, abortion or maybe this time, forcing people to have what "they" consider normal sex.
When dems get caught with their pants down, they have to resign or get impeached. When teapubs get caught with their pants down, they get re-elected and a standing ovation from the teapubs in Congress. What is wrong with this picture? And they are doing their best to crawl into our bedrooms, I guess to pick up some pointers?
They need to get out of our bedrooms, stop pushing "their" religion down our throats, stop pushing tax cuts for the rich, laws for big business, and do their damned jobs. And their damned jobs are to represent the people that elected them, not the money shoved into their pockets and campaigns. Until that changes, the average American will get no representation. We had a revolution about that once.
Unfortunately, no they don't. WE need to stop "tolerating" their bad behavior! Work to get them voted OUT! Then they can do whatever they want and spread whatever hate and discontent they want, but it won't hurt us!!!
Isn't this just about the last straw? Or maybe we need to be bashed some more before WE get going?
I haven't pulled the lever, or as now is the case, checked the box on the teapub line for almost 30 years. I've seen this coming and been called all sorts of names including crazy for saying they are leading down the wrong path and they are sticking it to the average American. Now I get to strut and say "I told you so!".
And I don't just cry on blogs. I write my reps and even reps that aren't mine when I think they are selling us out.
Phenner, it's good that you write your (& not your) reps, the problem is that it's going to take so much more than you crowing "I told you so". See, far more Americans than you know have been dumbed down and as long as the GOTP is singing "G-d= country = freedom" then the veil that they keep pulling over the eyes of their constituents will remain shut. The other issue is that Americans have either forgotten or never quite understood exactly "what good government" can and should be doing - and that is the job that WE (Americans with morals and intelligence) need to be doing connecting the dots for those that can't even see the dots are there and how the bills and policy positions are NOT benefiting working Americans.
After all the names I was called, I have a right to crow. Now I just smirk when they cry. I know lots of dumbed down people. The sad part, they are STILL dumbed down and STILL buying the lies. Some have seen the light and realize they are cutting their nose to spite their face, but the rest....Hopefully they will wake up, but I doubt it. I've even asked them the last time the teapubs promoted and passed a law for the average American and just get blank stares. Until it affects them, hard, they are going to be duped.
These are the same people that believe SS is breaking the government's back, that people on welfare are driving Mercedes, that people getting food stamps are selling them for beer and cigs, that the companies that have made millions even during the recession need tax breaks to create jobs and the biggest lie, that teapubs are looking out for the average American. These people will never connect the dots because they don't see the dots to begin with, thanks to Rush Lumpbrains and Faux Fake and BS Gnews.
That's true Phenner… the blank stare, or change to some other lashing out at someone else. That's what happens in real life.
Sad… they feel so sure of it, but if they only listened to themselves.
So Peter King (R-NY) says that "[A]nyone from New York and New Jersey who contributes one penny to congressional Republicans is out of their mind because what they did last night to put a knife in the back of New Yorkers and New Jerseyans was an absolute disgrace.". Will he name names and return their contributions that they made to him? I want to see that list. Is Koch Industries on it? Rove? Why is Christie still a Republican?
He walked his statements back later in the day.
Boehner did not put the bill up because it would have failed in the Republican caucus in the aftermath of a Fiscal Cliff agreement that did not include any spending cuts. That would have been an even worse outcome for the Republicans because it would have more clearly shown their black hearts. Christie may actually squeeze more blood from Republican rocks in the new congress.
When you say spending cuts you mean it didn't gut SS and Medicare, that's what the republicans are talking about when they talk of spending cuts. they talk about cutting spending while they try to give Defense trillions that they didn't ask for
Don't worry Northeastern people...Congress will give you aid after they give themselves a pay raise.
Some people in New York and New Jersey people may not have electrical power but they DO have voting power...
As the President said, "Let's cut the red tape" (and put that tape over Boehner's mouth)
Amen!
Congress gets an automatic 3% cost of living pay raise every year. Unless they get embarrassed enough to vote against it. And because they were so generous to give SS a 1.7% cost of living increase this year, they got their pay raise.
It begins to look more and more as though we need a new party so that those Republicans who are not in tune with the tea party but do not want to become Democrats, have some place to go.
Bull Moose, perhaps?
The GOP is way to busy trying to drown the Federal Government in a bathtub to pay any attention to the actual needs of our citizens.
They have been so effective at breaking our government it can no longer function even when they want it to.
People need to understand that.
Reagan defund mental hospitals in CA as Gov. The result homelessness and many, many mentally unbalanced living on the streets.
That was in the late 60s-early 70's, right?
http://www.nytimes.com/1984/10/30/science/how-release-of-mental-patients-began.html?pagewanted=all
Of course it was the old "the private sector communities will provide for these people".
Sandy, that was the final straw for me when Reagan did that. I voted for Ronnie the 2nd time but that was the last Republican I ever voted for. I never will again, either. Not under any circumstance.
I never liked St. Ronald. For more reasons than just that.
I do like his son, Ron Jr.
I've never voted for an R in my life, but I do appreciate balancing budgets.
I just don't think it will be helpful to economy to slash spending now (especially for neediest). We can look at war and defense spending cuts, but Jobs and wages increasing would be the first priority.
Glad you recognized the truth long ago, MsJoanne.
Eventually every executive had to cut loose life long inmates from institutions . Mike Dukakis had to , every one did . The fad found its durability and success from the magical idea you can save a lotta money by simply creating problems to be swept under the sky .
When , "just folks" , realized it would become blood money , it was a little too late . Many institutionalized souls who never were going to be able to function in the brave new world of Dickensonian cut throat capitalism were now responsible for concepts that were beyond the mental grasp of so many .
The heart breaking issues of trust and faith found many a nightmare from the magical release of the institutionalized souls into impossible conditions . Directed by as disturbing as they are incurable conditions these many schizophrenics , Bi Polar manic depressives , paranoids , Down syndrome , and paranoids were set free to mingle with the sociopaths who rationalized that it was all good .
You can see them arguing with themselves in every city , in every downtown , in America . When you hear of a senseless crime committed by a disturbed person who has become a part of society , remember it is not just any part , but the inimical Reagan's Part .
Well, the Northern Republicans are learning the hard way that once a Confederate, always a Confederate. Hoist on their own petard of 40 years of tolerating the takeover of their party by the southern traitors.
The South Is The Problem.
This should come as no surprise. Didn't we see GW Bush's reaction to Katrina? And the House's insistance that any disaster relief be "paid for" with budget reductions in other places? Republicans are a bunch of mean-spirited, hard-hearted, hypocritical bigots. Of course they don't care about the victims of Hurricane Sandy--nor about anyone's misery. They want to balance the budget on the backs of the old, the sick, and the elderly--not because it makes economical sense--but because their hard, stingy hearts delight in hurting those who are already hurting. These people are NOT Christians!
The teapubs only want budget reductions when it's anything that helps the average American. When it's for their wars, no-bid contracts for those wars, deals with pharma for Medicare Part D and tax breaks for the rich, it's on credit. And why not? They get to blame the dems and people buy into it.
Not Christians? They're not HUMAN.
True, but they don't brag about being human; they brag that they are Christians.
Gov. Christie was unable to reach Boehner...but did speak with the President today:
http://www.politico.com/politico44/2013/01/obama-talks-to-christie-cuomo-153160.html
Also see http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/01/christie_cuomo_blast_congress.html
"It has now been 66 days since Hurricane Sandy hit and 27 days since President Obama put forth a responsible aid proposal that passed with a bipartisan vote in the Senate while the House has failed to even bring it to the floor," Christie and Cuomo said in a joint statement.
Christie is still a blowhard, but he's earned a lot of points with me over the past couple of months. I love that he genuinely seems to put his constituents ahead of party orthodoxy, but he's pretty much screwed himself in the GOP primaries come 2016.
I think this event may have a profound effect on Christie's actions. At least I hope so. We do not live in a world of imaginary ideals, but reality steps in and cannot be "rationalized" as well… they will pull themselves up by boot straps with no help from Congress.
At the same time, this is is what some folks would call "pork". So there you have it. People in need is just their own problem, or is there something the government has more of a role here?
I am not sure Christie will be ready in 2016, but for sure 2020. He'll still be a young man.
I think he sees what a lot of us see - that the Tea Party's days will be over if there is a populist movement that rises up against them. I don't think that the ultra rich will be so willing to support a Tea Party hack, given what happened to them with Romney, and especially if they they see a populist uprising - why put good money up for someone that can't win?
The one thing I think most people realize about Christie is that the country will be "safe" in his hands. We might not like his "politics" but he's shown that when push comes to shove, he will do what is right for his people.
Christie is a reactionary blowhard and bully. Just because you are enjoying the fact that his latest target is the House GOP, does not mean that anyone would be "safe" in his hands.
Don't forget that, prior to Sandy, he was in full voice in the GOP choir and telling "his people" to shut up if they didn't like it.
@rayward, I totally agree. Christie is fighting the good fight now because the people in his state are suffering and he wants to be re-elected governor next year. He will not, by any means, continue to be so reasonable if he ends up running for president. He is, by nature, a very mean-spiritied and unlikeable kind of guy, current circumstances notwithstanding. I don't trust him as far as I can spit.
Christie vetoed gay marriage. That shows me alot. I still would favor him over virtually any other prominent Republican because of his unwillingness to go along with crazy orthodoxy.
Just more stupidity and complete lack of responsibility coming from the GOP. One debacle after another! What a dysfunctional party and that dirt bag Issa from CA once again wants to blame the senate. Read this guys bio on wikipedia it reads like a police blotter!! The reality is Boehner and his imposter's turned their backs on their own party and more importantly all those people who suffered from the devastation of Sandy in NY, NJ, and Ct.... unconscionable! Now, only after Christie, King, and even Cuomo adding his disgust have the GOP decided they better do something to save their political lives! Which leaves you disgusted with that as a first intention. Take heed GOP you are soon to see the biggest tsunami that ever hit your party in history! It would be unfathomable to think anyone could vote for these misfits again!!!
Our family is feuding and its a shame.I have nothing against my brethern from the north-east or anywhere else.I love America from shore to shore. This baptism by fire we are enduring is gonna purge the by-products from the steel. You're either limited government or something else. You believe in state's rights and strong national defense, time tested traditional and rational approaches to problems that plague society. We are not anarchist nor Victorian Scrouges, we believe in fiscal and personal responsibility. We need this test.Fractured like an extreme sports yuppy we may be, but gone we are not.Who knows what other attachments lie in a bill? Vote for it you loose, vote against you still loose. The games that the party in power play are often down and dirty.Just chill Gov. Christie and Mr. Speaker, please. The left doesn't feed on their own and you can't get all of us together in a wheel barrow.
Was that supposed to make sense?
He's just another Fox generated "blowhard". He only knows what they tell him. He has no common sense or no clues.
Just put him on ignore.
Billhilli, You are nuts, and you don't know anything about the history of disaster relief in America. For longer than I can remember Americans have been shoulderiing disaster relief. We haven't tied disaster relief to a reduction some place else. We have just taken on the problem and dealt with the disaster. What House Republicans are asking is entirely new. They are utterly unAmerican. billhillie, if you think they are right, so are you.
Bucko, disaster relief is a serious part of "provide for the common defense." That is as American as it gets.
Give the guy credit, he did get us to try to make sense of that...
http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lhkdez69U81qblm06.gif
Except the poor, liberals, gays, non-Christians, Democrats, etc. All the people you've spoken out against before on your blog posts. Heh.
Apparently bill you're for something else. You cannot believe in limited government while also believing in a strong national defense. Either the government is limited in it's scope and power and thus it's influence over the states OR a government is not. Now which one is it? See this is one of those situations where you've bought into mindless talking points over pointed reality. Either government can be limited OR government can solve problems plaguing society. If government is limited at the federal level from addressing these problems (which oddly enough have no name and have no answer) then that leaves it to the states. But you cannot leave it to the states if you want the national defense to be strong.
Which is why we whine like babies when it's our taxes going up (as you did on Maddowblog), but we don't care if other people's taxes go up (this is the antithesis of "personal responsibility"). Hence why we accuse everyone else of having no personal responsibility, but we never hold ourselves accountable (hence why you don't offer facts, you resort to name calling, you don't make well reasoned arguments, etc). And hence why you complain about fiscal responsibility, but then are totally happy with bills that expand the deficit.
I think the Republican Party is filled with those who actually understand and research the problems facing our society and filled with those whose only indoctrination to government, policy, and politics came at the soundbite of a Fox News broadcaster. The former group sees serious reality complications within it's own element and wants nothing more to do with the nutballs who perpetuate this stupidity. The latter want only the nutjobs to run the asylum. Christie is attempting to tap dance across this balancing beam, but he's not that agile (no that's not a fat joke- that's a joke about his Irish/Italian personality). And it's going to come to a point where he, like the remaining sane Republicans, are either going to purge the nutters from their midst or they are going to split and try to form a 3rd party.
Sounds a little desperate? Billhillie… When they start apologizing and pleading… desperation.
We need to understand cutting spending like they want to right now is going to tank the economy.
There needs to be some rational thinking. There was a massive storm, killing and destroying Americans' lives. The aid would rebuild and create demand, jobs, revenue, economic recovery. Get it?
The stoppage of government spending and holding debt limit hostage is HARMFUL to America. It is not going to help economy here or anywhere else if we cut more jobs. The revenues need to come from more jobs in the U.S. and economy would improve. People would get their neighborhoods fixed… what a concept?
Doesn't anybody recognize his name? He's been banned at least once.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the package raises taxes by $620 billion while cutting spending by only $15 billion — a 41-1 ratio. Plus it adds $329 billion to the federal deficit in 2013, increasing it by $3.9 trillion over 10 years.
No surprise, since President Obama, Democrats and Liberals feel that the 16 TRILLION that will soon go to 20 TRILLION has any consequences!!!
Of course, once we get out the two Bush-inspired voluntary wars, give Medicare the ability to negotiate drug prices for the Bush-inspired Medicare Part D, and recover from the recession that Republican-inspired morality caused, then we can consider raising taxes on everyone to the levels set during the first Clinton administration.
With any luck, when that latter occurs during HRC's first administration, we'll also be able to go back to the pre-Reagan marginal rates of 50% on all income over $2 million.
There's no reason to reward incompetence...
Isn't it about time that you realized that America does not have a revenue problem we have a spending problem?????
Obama at the time said
Since becoming President, however, Obama has added more debt than Bush ever did, and he did it in less than half the time.
Not only has Obama added more debt, he has provided no plans for deficit reduction and his only budget so far was so radical and extreme it got no support in the Senate whatsoever.
Morrissey adds:
Since his inauguration, Obama has done nothing but rack up more debt with feckless policies that now threaten the nation's economy
He has done little more than blame everyone - especially President Bush -for his own failures.
Er president's don't spend money. Congress does. Obama is responsible for ~3 trillion in spending. That's it.
So let me get this straight. He hasn't tried to help reduce the costs any, except for when he did. But that doesn't count because our roadblocked congress (you know the people who actually control spending) did not want to vote for it.
And you're quoting a person without providing the actual source and then saying that Obama has offered policies that would increase the deficit. Based on what facts?
Obamacare= reduced the deficit
SCHIP= reduced the deficit
Ending the Iraq war= reduced the deficit
Tax increases for this stupid fiscal cliff= reduced the deficit
Stimulus measures= reduced the deficit
What exactly has he done that has increased the deficit so dramatically? The only things I can think of are the War in Libya.
And what does anything of this have to do with Chris Christie and the issue of Hurricane Sandy?
Heh I have a follow-up question to. I am going to ask this of everyone who complains about the deficit and debt. Why does the debt matter and why does the deficit matter? Provide evidence for your assertion(s).
"Tax increases for this stupid fiscal cliff= reduced the deficit"
According to the Congressional Budget Office, the package raises taxes by $620 billion while cutting spending by only $15 billion — a 41-1 ratio. Plus it adds $329 billion to the federal deficit in 2013, increasing it by $3.9 trillion over 10 years.
"Why does the debt matter and why does the deficit matter? Provide evidence for your assertion(s)."
On a per person basis, that means U.S. debt is $53,400 for every man, woman, and child, compared to $39,400 for every man, woman, and child in Greece.
The national debt has increased from $10.6 trillion to $16 trillion, or 50 percent, since President Obama took office.
The national debt will increase from $16 trillion to $25.4 trillion in 2022, or 59 percent, under President Obama’s budget plans.
Again that's a statement that says it is reducing the deficit. You're complaining because the Republican Party insisted that the bill not be paid for by not covering the entire 2% increase. Congratulations: you've just proven that Republicans increased the deficit. Good job
A. this is not evidence for your assertion (nothing you've stated has been backed with evidence)
B. This does not explain why it matters. So please actually respond to the question instead of repeating a talking point that doesn't fulfill any purpose.
Correct. But this is not because of spending initiated by Obama which you falsely claimed to be the case. There is a difference between the debt increasing and government spending. Let me ask you another question: how much of this debt was already projected before Obama took office?
You mean the budget that you stated never passed? So now you're flip-flopping. Good job. Again provide evidence, explain why it matters, and then explain how much of this was projected without President Obama. What you're going to find is that we've been projecting a 20 trillion dollar deficit by 2020 since before Obama took office. Thanks for paying attention just now when it's politically convenient.
What did Christie expect? Just because he made that useless, stupid gesture with the Affordable Care Act he thought he was back in the good graces of the Tea Party cult leaders? He should have recalled the inspiring words of his friend Willard Mitt. Those New Jersey parasites are just moochers who "are dependent upon the government, who believe they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it."
And how exactly did President Obama respond to your new found discovery of our Union Governor Christie?
You starting to get the picture fathead?
I firmly believe both parties will debate the debt crisis fiercely but at the same time with conviction to do the right thing for this country. Unfortunately, through the cold realty of final decisions rendered people will be effected by the programs deemed expendable. It is the majority perception that a balanced budget is needed, just not that simple. When you have gas and food prices rising, 2 million people reliant on unemployment, a huge contingent of seniors who have paid into social security and medicare their entire working lives and now have that threatened, wars being fought, Wall street fraud duping thousands out of their savings, a government that can't reach across the aisle for the betterment of all Americans, financial aid for foreign countries, and the wealthiest of Americans such as Warren Buffet who pays less in taxes a year then his secretary, then what you have is chaos. This will be no different then the cliff in regards to getting something accomplished in the waning minutes before our Government will be forced to shut down. We are in for another pardon the term "cliff hanger" Spending cuts will be hard to swallow for many but in the end I really do think we all will be better off as a "whole". I wish all people well and sincerely hope Congress finds a common ground here that is humanitarian in nature but aso effective in restoring not only our economy but our faith in the Washington elite.
Rachel should have a weekly segment called "Boehner's Boners".
My suspisions are that Mr. Boehner has' nt had a legitamate BONER in many many years. It is clear to me the man? has no balls!!!!!!!!!
BAY-ner???? This is America where, "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking." Boe=BO, not BA!!!
Boehner is a German name.
Boehner is a German name, as is Hermann Goering (pronounced Gairing).
German? Sounds foreign to me. Was his dad born in the United States? Has anyone demanded to see Boehner's birth certificate? And how about his college transcripts! : )
I am an independent,no politcal afiliations. That said I am really beginning to like Gov. Christie. The man talks straight to the facts wherever they lead.He does not bow down to the IDIOTS that are the Republican Party. I beieve he is his own man.He talks plain no polical garbage. But more important than all of that.HE DOES THE JOB HE WAS ELECTED TO AND IS PAID TO DO!!!!!!! This is the essential difference that sets him apart from every Republicanthat is in Congress. The people of N.J. would be wise to retain this man's services for as long as they can.His like may not come their way ever again.
