Dude, that brings back so many memories. Oh, the feels... #FlipYourWig
Hello Rachel and everyone who works on the show,
Thank you for your reporting, thank you for your integrity. Thank you for the "weirdness" that you have to put long introductions to stories. It brings historical context and greater understanding to what you are reporting, like the escaped German POW story on 1/3 and the Dick Morris story on 1/4. You are right; sometimes a person's response to reporting becomes a reportable fact also.
Thank you Rachel, for writing "Drift", a story and a viewpoint that needs to be told and debated. Don't ever stop; don't ever give up.
Thank you!
Extremely awesome show tonight! Especially loved your take down on Morris!
Long time viewer, love your show, love you, but why did you waste my time with that overly long inside baseball Dick Morris story that has no relevance to anything important? I forgive you for indulging yourself, but please there were better stories out there you could have explored.
DUring the intro you said there have been only 3 two-term Dem presidents in the last 100 years. Wilson was elected in 1912 and re-elected in 1916. Please explain your fuzzy math.
Mike, 100 years ago Wilson had been elected but not inuagurated, so none on his term(s) had begun. Just my guess.
As Mishpocha and while I have already told friends how much I watch your show, I can see perhaps the reason you did not do your own digging for information as to why AIPAC is not supporting Hagel. Perhaps to appear more balanced in your presentation it is of course more neutral to get a guest speaker to present these facts. However I do not think your guest did justice to the issues. Merely indicating that a President should call on all countries in the Middle East equally would be fine if all the countries in the ME were not trying to throw one of those countries into the sea. I think I would tend to side more with the country the other countries see as a pariah since they tend not to be even handed in THEIR approach. Having said that, it is perhaps true that:
"But for Netanyahu, who has been sharply criticised by retired senior officials of Israel’s national-security establishment for allegedly endangering the Jewish state’s strategic ties with the U.S. by repeatedly defying Obama, the stakes are also high.
If he is seen as backing any effort to defeat Hagel’s anticipated nomination, his ties with the White House – already tenuous given his scarcely veiled support for Mitt Romney in the November presidential campaign – will likely only worsen."(Jim Lobe’s blog)
In addition, for the sake of balance I think it would go to thoroughness if you included the fact that Hagel has blankedly indicated:" that the “Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people around here [Washington],”" That kind of stance is hurtful when a solitary ally is given a hard time for trying to speak its truth.
And yes I understand that it is Obama who makes Policy, however if those in charge already categorize Israel's government as being not too friendly during the last election, it strikes me that it would be too easy to forget that Israel is not the Government of Israel, but the People of Israel.
Great show! Loved Al Gore's convention speech.
However, I think this one line challenges that speech for "Al Gore's best moment of the 1996 campaign":
"Al Gore is so boring, his Secret Service code name is Al Gore."

I was looking forward to a cocktail moment, but the department of corrections was better.
I wish Rachel will do some digging on the effect of Obamacare on out healthcare system but I know it's not going to happen so I will:
My wife is a doctor and because of Obamacare her salary has been drastically cut. Two doctors in her group have retired early and her caseload has drastically increased. She works 10 to 12 hours a day and comes home every night, exhausted. She loves her job
but as soon as we finish paying for our son's college she plans on only working
part-time. We have a friend who is a doctor in California and he plans on
retiring as soon as he can.
This is happening to doctors across the country who don't have their own businesses and work for a hospital. The ones with their own business have their own set of problems with Obamacare.
There will also be less doctors immigrating here.
I have had one Doctor tell me he will no longer accept Medicare patients; he can't afford them. Our Brazilian nanny has a daughter that was born deaf and her Doctor told her that he will no longer be able to treat the daughter (she is on Medicaid) because he can't afford it either You don’t get something for nothing which is basically what Obamacare promised! Obamacare also has an Affirmative Action clause for Medical Schools. Medical Schools will be required to admit and graduate more blacks. In the future, chances are you doctor got his degree because of the color of his skin not how good they were. Healthcare quality in this country is going way down!
This looks like it's been quickly copy/pasted from an email.
I hope that silly's wife gave him a vasectomy ! If his story is true !
BS and a bigot to boot. Go back to Faux. I have friends and relatives in the medical profession and they say the ACA should have happened years ago. It actually means the doctors and hospitals are going to get paid instead of tacking on an extra 25% or more to their bills to cover the people that can't or don't pay.
I don't believe your story about your wife's cut in pay. Most of the Obamacare provisions are not even in effect. It seems to me that most of your story is fabrication. The ACA has not changed how Medicare works. Many doctors didn't take Medicare before the ACA. The fees doctors get from Medicare have not been reduced. The only problem with the ACA is that it didn't become universal healthcare, which we need.
Best response to 'sullyman2112' and others of his ilk, slingers of falsehoods who cannot even be bothered to spell check their drivel before posting, is *ignore*.
I expected as much from MSNBC fans. If you do not agree with my opinion you you think the story is fake. Just because Rachel and the other loons on MSNBC don't report it you think it is not true.
The pay cuts have happened and my wife has called friends and associates across the country and they tell her the same thing is happening where they work. The hospitals are doing this so they will have the money to cover the extra costs and taxes of Obamacare. You will see the health-care situation get worse as the years go by.
Afair -Medicare reimbursements have been reduced by an additional 21% to 27%
Phenner - Obama is the bigot, look up what I said about Affirmative Action in medical schools on Google. Also I think you lying about having friends let alone friends as doctors because they would not be applauding Obamacare. No on in the health industry is. The nurses unions in CA went on strike a few week ago because of increased workload related to Obamacare
Mishe - I did copy it from a post I made on another site.
What "costs" more than all the doctors, the drugs, hospital admissions, and wheelchairs combined? Answer: the regulatory healthcare bureaucracy, mostly Federal government but the states as well and more so for those who set up healthcare exchanges.
Before ACA, the healthcare bureaucracy consumed 40% of all healthcare
spending. That was over $1 trillion in one year. That sum is roughly the same
as the U.S. spent in ten years of war in Iraq.
With full implementation of Obamacare, the bureaucratic cost will rise to ≈50%. Make sure you understand: half of all U.S. healthcare spending will produce no health care.
Perhaps the pay cuts are because of Poor Hospital Administration and rather than accept responsibility for their ineptness they are putting the blame on a program that really has not yet taken effect. When people came to the hospital and did not have insurance, did the hospital treat them? Did your wife treat them? If they did how did the hospital and your wife get paid? Do you not believe that Health Care Costs in this Country are very high and need to be brought down, so everyone can afford medical treatment?'
I looked up the Nurses Strike in California - here is the source: http://www.nationalnursesunited.org/press/entry/rns-to-strike-9-bay-area-hospitals-december-24/
No where in this article is Obamacare aka Affordable Health Care Act mentioned by the nurses. One of their quotes however was:
"Sutter has forced us to strike again by immorally proposing to strip us of our sick leave, healthcare, and much of what we have worked hard for over the years,” said Alta Bates Summit Oakland RN Paula Lynn. “Sutter must stop its unfair treatment of nurses and negotiate a fair contract.”
I just love how so many jump on someone who posts a comment here with which they disagree. They don't, for the most part, look at the substance or address the issues. They attack the person!
Granted, some addressed issues and to them I applaud their contribution and encourage more. I don't want to appear to say "everyone" does it.
Just for the record, here's a recent article from CNBC (should be reliable, huh?) that mentions a couple of the things sullyman proposed.
Not jumping, but just curious...can you admit that some of this is being done under the name of ACA, that has nothing to do with it in actuality?
And if you can admit that, which is a rational conclusion, can you quantify how much?
NeedMoreCoffee, when you say "some of this" are you referring to the reaction or response from some in the medical community or you referring to policy that is being written?
My answer would probably be the same no matter. Yes. I'm sure "both" sides are pushing their own viewpoint and/or agenda. But, it stands to reason, pushing millions into the system without much more money or an effective way to redirect the money is going to cause hardship.
Quantifing it is way above my pay grade...someone will have to do a fairly extensive study, which I'm sure people on both sides will eventually do or have it currently underway. But, I get you point.
Need - it's possible. But why the sudden cut in salaries across the country? I just stated what I am seeing and hearing.
You don't get something for nothing.
Hospital management are the ones making the most money and are going to cut whatever they can to reduce the hit they are going to take from Obamacare
I know that I shouldn't waste my time responding to your post as it has "troll" written all over it, but here goes...First, healthcare in this country is already deplorable (and has been for some time). Moreover, the major components of Obamacare have not event gone into effect. Therefore, it is unlikely that your wife's salary has been reduced as a result of Obamamcare---perhaps the reduction in her salary is a result of her skills (or lack thereof) as a practioner?
Furthermore, Obamacare has no affirmative action component (although, I am a proponent of affirmative action). If you believe such a provision is actually in the law, you are even more ignorant that your post suggests...
Cut in pay in hospitals is due to mismanagement and lack of thoughtful strategic planning not any legislation. Placing blame on ACA is an easy shot, but it is not where any blame lies. My mom has been in in the medical service/education/administration field for over 60 years and serves on a hospital board which is doing fine, thanks to her board understanding the direction health care has been moving for some time. And that's toward home based care. The outcomes are better and good health management is going to be more about patient education, not service. I'm not at all dismissing the fine care of skilled medical staff in dealing with immediate need. And the public needs to know they will receive fine care wherever they go for immediate care in a medical emergency. However Medicare and insurance companies, in trying to reduce their expenses, are/have been cutting their payout for return visits for the same condition for some time. Many hospitals simply didn't keep up and adapt to the loss of income until too late. With the ACA structured in a way to reward hospitals for reducing the number of return visits in the future, things will turn around for them but probably not at the same staffing levels. And then there's a billing system that is causing financial havoc for hospitals I'll save for another post.......
Looking at your AV sully, states you have a racist ax to grind so your post is useless,, but thanks for proving yourself an idiot,, :>)
I very much enjoy the Rachel Maddow program, but was wondering about the weird "Hüsker Düe" graphic behind the Chuck Hagel story. In Norwegian and Danish, "Husker du?" means "Do you remember?", which seems appropriate for a feature that recalls previous statements by Mr. Hagel on the excessive power of the AIPAC lobby and on his erstwhile hypothesis about the supposed aggressiveness of gay people, but the umlaut over the "u" is not used in any Scandinavian language; the umlaut-U is used mainly in German. However, the German for "Do you remember?" is "Erinnerst du?"
Kind wishes, Erik
Hi, Erik
I'm thinking Rachel used "Husker Due" as a reference to "Huskers", which is another name for the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, my alma mater.
I suspect Maddow's graphic was a pun. Hüsker Dü was a punk band from Minnesota. They were around in the 1980's but have since disappeared.

... Included "perspective", of .... "Ronald Reagan's", where considering it, set against the "Deficit".
Just watched your show about Shell drilling in the Artic and you never mentioned that Obama is ALL FOR Artic drilling. Why is that? (and this isn't the first time you mislead people, like Obama supporting police in Supreme court ruling last year)
Oh my god, it was so rich to see Rachel do such a thorough job of taking down a real (expletive deleted) like Dick Morris. The only thing missing was the report that Dick Morris had a certain proclivity for sucking hooker's toes!
But I think it's time that someone expose the reality that conservative punditry is nothing more than a business scam. And it now has gotten so bad that the business scam has cost Republicans the White House and who knows how many seats in Congress.
But I gotta admit, I don't know what I like more. Rachel exposing a (expletive deleted) like Dick Morris in this scam, to the fact that the scam is now turning the entire Republican party into a dysfunctional mess.
Just think: the party that was all in favor of business and campaign finance deregulation to such a degree that people like Tom DeLay and Jack Abramoff became household names for their scummy criminal behavior is now a party that is a victim of scummy criminal behavior, because of (expletive deleted) like Dick Morris are too busy cashing in when they're telling their supporters he's trying to win elections for Republicans!
The irony here is richer than Ben & Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie! The only thing we need now are reports that the National Republican Party's bank account has been closed due to Enron-style accounting "errors", and several Republican party leaders have gone "missing".
Right on, Alva!!!
Gary cooper's "meet john doe" is the playbook for today's tea party
I agree it might be the playbook, but the plutocrats haven't found anyone to play Gary Cooper's part.
Freshman Republican Handbook
good one, David!
Thanks for the closing story on Dick, dickhead, Morris. Will they ever learn that when you are sneaky, or greedy, you'll always get caught!
Please spread the word: Democrats won the House of Representatives by over one million votes. The Republicans got more seats because of their gerrymandering. Shame. hj
It is grand that the Representative Markey (and hopefully soon Senator) wants accountability. Unfortunately, the current feeding frenzy over the Kulluk and Discoverer by those wishing to kill all off shore drilling just muddies the water (sorry) as so much of the commentary has been inaccurate (for example the comments by "EdwardTeller" on FDL who argues he doesn't have to be accurate because he is not a reporter.) Whether or not I think offshore drilling (or onshore drilling for that matter) is a good idea (and in light of the likelihood that offshore drilling will muck things up terribly those supporting it could best be regarded as hopeful) Shell's investment suggests that if we stop slobbering and put our energy into an appropriate risk management and compliance regime with real oversight that is funded (the Rear Admiral knows how poorly the Coast Guard in Alaska is funded) to that end, we will either put an end to efforts to such drilling as too expensive, or get drilling in a responsible manner that will allow the Senator to be to inquire of Shell's efforts without the industry's embarrassment (wouldn't that be grand!)
I just watched a thing called Detachment. I guess it was just a movie. But it was way to real to be just a movie. It was the scariest darn thing I have ever witnessed, to be just a movie. Way to close to home. Way to much caring.
