On the anniversary of her shooting, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly launch a gun-control effort.
Meanwhile, happy first annual "Gun Appreciation Day."
The attempted Boehner-coup plotter is fundraising off of his anti-Boehner vote.
What people say they did with the money from the recently-expired payroll tax cut.
Some Hurricane Sandy victims are allowed to return to their homes on the Jersey shore.
Pres. George H.W. Bush is still in the hospital.
Remember that mock mission to Mars? The scientific results are in, and they are not so great.

Here is an article that outlines how much the American gun lobby contributed to the 2012 election campaigns of various U.S. politicians:

One would hardly expect Congress to be impartial on gun control with millions of dollars of support, including a donation of over $500,000 to one very prominent politician.
Gotta start somewhere. ARS is getting a check from me today.
I propose giving Jared Loughner and James Holmes guarded furloughs so they can attend the event.
Just have an idea that I think can help with the security in all of our schools. My Mother-in-law has one of those devices that she wears around the house, that calls 911 when she pushes a button that goes around her neck. If all school staff and teachers were given this button to call the police it would make schools alot safer than armed teachers with little or no training. If the teachers and principal of Newtown, CT would have had one the police would have been there alot sooner than dialing 911, they wouldnt need to be near a phone either.
Brilliant, Mark. Simply BRILLIANT!! Let's start pushing this.
Great idea. I would even extend it to the children, so that they could get help if threatened.
Gun Appreciation Day????? Wow, isn't that a slap in the faces of the victims and their families?
Fillibuster, fillibuster, fillibuster!!!! In the end, it's what will enable the change we believe in. Wanna see Rachel's take on the progress.
My first thought was how crass to have gun appreciation day on the anniversary of Giffords' shooting. Then I realized that EVERY DAY is the anniversary of someone's shooting, well-known or not. Every Day.
I'm waiting for Matt1254 to show up any second now. Did anyone else notice that he posted 26 "comments" (some filled an entire screen) in response to the White
House eyes 'far broader' gun-control agenda piece yesterday? He claims to be an attorney, but he can't be getting much work done if he's on the MaddowBlog site all day, trying to muddy the waters.
Maybe business is slow, so he's moonlighting as a troll?
You should check out the excellent work the Mars Society has been doing in simulating the Mars experience in various desert and Arctic settings. I would guess the problems with the European experiment might have more to do with the lack of motivation other than money. The Mars Society folks are dedicated; see this as a cause -- much like any real-life astronauts might.
