Vice President Biden met with opponents of gun control today, including NRA officials.
Today's edition of quick hits:
* Try to contain your surprise: "The National Rifle Association on Thursday said it was 'disappointed' with the results of a meeting with the gun violence prevention task force led by Vice President Joe Biden." Apparently, Biden believes in some gun control measures.
* On a related note, the task force is ahead of schedule: "Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will present President Obama with proposals for stemming gun violence by Tuesday, setting in motion legislative and executive actions that will encompass guns, ammunition, mental health services and violent images in popular culture."
* Brutal violence in Pakistan: "Bomb blasts in two Pakistani cities killed at least 115 people on Thursday and wounded more than 270, offering harrowing evidence of how the country's myriad internal conflicts could destabilize it as elections approach."
* Another school shooting: "A high school teacher and a campus supervisor talked a student into surrendering after he opened fire in a classroom, wounding a classmate at a school in California's southern San Joaquin Valley on Thursday morning, police said."
* In case anyone's curious, there is a uniformed deputy sheriff that monitors the school's campus all day. Update: it turns out the deputy sheriff didn't make it to work today.
* Would the trillion-dollar coin lead to another downgrade of America's credit rating? As it turns out, no, it wouldn't.
* A welcome change of heart: "Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) on Tuesday toured areas in the Northeast devastated by Hurricane Sandy and left with the impression that it is now 'time for the federal government to provide immediate relief to those affected by the storm,' the Gulf Coast lawmaker said in a statement."
* Fascinating piece from Chris Mooney: "The Science of Why Comment Trolls Suck: The online peanut gallery can get you so riled up that your ability to reason goes out the window, a new study finds."
* Stay classy, Rush: "Limbaugh: liberals 'would never use their guns to kill kids. They'll use abortion for that.'"
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

NRA takes ball and goes home...
Here's hoping that they were ''gravely disappointed" and will go to the grave.
Proof the NRA is pro-murder:
Crackhead, I remember when Rachel mentioned this idea on the show some time back, and thought it would be a good idea...for about 2 seconds.
...do you have any idea of what happens to a bullet after it's fired?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfDoQwIAaXg
Now, if you were to put a serial number of the shell casing, that could work. I would be all in favor of that.
I've been using guns for over 50 years and I know EXACTLY what happens to a bullet after it is fired.
When it is fired into steel at a target it is mangled. The blunt end of the bullet where the serial number is printed is flattened and distorted but not destroyed.
When a bullet is fired into a body it is usually less distorted.
The blunt end of the bullet is usually legible when I get them out of the sandbox at the local pistol range. Same with bullets removed from the sand at the outdoor rifle range.
The only exception is with assault rifles where the bullet tumbles.
The serial number printed inside the brass cartridge would also be visible.
The Ammunition ID Act requires a serial number on both the blunt end of the bullet as well as inside the brass case that is ejected by automatic weapons when you fire and revolvers when you reload.
I have to tell you this gun ban is bad for the administration. USUALLY it is the loony right trying to punish everyone for what the few have or have not done. The right. Now it is the president himself trying to punish everyone for the acts of a few. You are more likely to be struck by lighting than shot as a student or otherwise in a school shooting but by all means shoot off your nose to spite your face. ; ].. pun.
Besides the fact that all of the money contributing supporters of the President telling everyone he would never touch guns are made out to be the liars we now are he will further push the right to dig in and never co operate with him. Because he will have made the conspiracy true in there eyes. I have to tell you it disgusts me as well to see this path taken by the administration. ; ] Guns are not the problem and I have seen NO steps to enhance treatment of the mentally ill nor have I seen any steps being made toward identifying those youths who may want to kill in mass there fellow children and teachers. ; ] Yet guns are the target? Hmm. Indeed.
I can tell you simply due to this issue I feel regret of the monotary support I gave this president especially when I am being made out to be a liar by him when it was initially on his behalf. ; ]
What a joke indeed... ;]
Cheers
Cheers!
The pres had no intention of going after any guns until 20 babies were slaughtered and the people of the US, at least those with functioning minds and hearts, stood up and said enough is enough. You poor babies who feel the absolute need for military style weapons and monster size magazines are way to self absorbed and apparently incapable of seeing the big picture here. Y'all sound like the seaguls from Finding Nemo... "Mine, Mine, mine, mine, mine..... ad nauseum
The NRA is a part of the Koch Coalition. The Koch Coaltion includes the gun makers and ALEC (american legislative exchange council) who developed the model laws for Stand Your Ground and Right to Carry. The Koch Coalition includes the Koch Brothers, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, Vice President Dick Cheney, Rupert Murdoch, Grover Norquist, Mitt Romney, Karl Rove, among others. The Kochs established the conserrvative "think tanks": Heritage Foundation, American Enterprise Institute, among others. As of 2010, the Koch Coalition had a corporate takeover of the Republican Party and they still have effective but diminished control of it. With the Romney candidacy, they came close to taking over the country.
So, if you are going to do something about gun control, you have to do something at the same time to diminish the power of the Koch Coalition.
By the way, the Kochs are doing quite well with all the subsidies and tax breaks and government programs from which they profit. 2010 - Koch Brothers combined worth - $44 billion, 2011 - $50 billion, 2012 - $62 billion. Nice takeover money.
Crackhead, fair points, but going into a body, it's often badly mangled. Even more so if you're using defensive rounds like hollowpoints. You could put them on the blunt end of the bullet, I'm just not sure it would do ya much good. I think an ID on the shell casing would certainly help, and would be less likely to get distorted. Putting them on both is a good idea I think.
Freedom is dangerous it has always been dangerous. Thee unfortunate circumstance of living with millions of other free people in the same country. You must live and deal with all of the other free peoples wants needs habits and desires. They must mind yours as well. Responsible law abiding owners are that. The are responsible period. To see ones family or ones self punished as a responsible law abiding owner due to psychotic minds acting is right how? That is not to mention the money that will be taken from the economy.
Like the illegal immigrant issue. Americans shot themselves in the foot by demanding cheap labor leave our country never to return. Ever sense the republican tea bagging congress has done nothing to earn its money except stopping the growth of the nation we are going to continue to stifle growth? Growth is growth and we need dollars flowing period. That's capitalism.
Cheers

The "Chris Mooney" piece brings up an important question about why nobody has figured out how to stop depressions and recessions.
Take a look at this:
Nearly half the wealth of the United State disappeared between 2006 and 2009.
Wealth continued to grow in almost a dozen states while the rest of the economy collapsed.
We need to use evidence to establish exactly why that happened.
The real story of the Great Recession economy emerges when we look at population growth.
That is almost the same list that escaped the Great Recession.
A coincidence emerges when we look at states that nullified the Real ID Act of 2005. The downturn in the "bikini graph" corresponds to when enforcement of the Real ID Act began.
The database established by the Real ID Act is actually being used for voter suppression and not for national security.
An examination of the past 100 years confirms the link.
If you omit Reagan and Taft, then republican presidents have a record of 100% economic failure for over a century.
Reagan and Taft are the only republicans presidents with pro-immigration policies, and the only republicans that did not collapse the economy.
good stuff as always my friend.
Thanks.
I came across this because a DUI check point funded by the Real ID Act is in front of my house.
Kind of hard to miss.
The Real ID Act of 2005 bans drivers licenses for immigrants.
The police are using that to steal cars from immigrants because they can't get a drivers licence. Police used that to steal about 6 million cars.
The automotive industry collapsed when those 6 million stolen cars were sold at auction.
That is why 6 million dwellings were abandoned after 4 immigrants "self deported" and another 2 million were forced out of the country.
Empty houses as far as the eye can see.
Banks up to their a$$ in bad debt because immigrants stop paying rent and mortgage after they are gone.
You doing something right when you want immigration.
I think you're wrong. Reagan did crash the economy. Under his tenure, unemployment skyrocketed after he gave tax cuts for the rich. It reached double digit levels for the first time since the Great Depression. Then in '87 the stock market crashed. If Greenspan hadn't stepped in and flooded the market with liquidity, we might have gone into a deep recession, Reagan would have gone down in history as an incredible failure.
Even still, the recession at the end of the 80's/early 90's was the result of Reagan's mishandling of the economy.
It is a fact that Reagan improved unemployment - after collapsing the economy during his first term.
People get in trouble when they "think" about documented facts that are easy to look up.
Reagan inherited a 7.20% unemployment from the Carter administration. In 3 years it rose to 10.80%. By the end of Reagan's 2nd term it lowered to 5.4%, which was lower than at the end of the Carter administration.
You can get detailed unemployment statistics from Bureau of Labor Statistics (click the link).
http://www.bls.gov/bls/unemployment.htm
It is a crime for government employees to post false information on the web, so you can be sure this information is factual with lots of proof.
Crack, I'm well aware. Unemployment did improve by the end of Reagan's term, but this was largely what I call "fake growth". It's the same reason why you see lower unemployment rates for Dubya than Obama. It was growth fueled by new debt creation. And anyone can live large with a 4 trillion dollar credit card like Reagan did.
By the way, you can look up the unemployment data on google too. They have a nice little interactive graph over there. Here's a link.

The online peanut gallery can get you so riled up that your ability to reason goes out the window...
Of course, there are exceptions to this rule. For example, Pooper242 has never displayed the ability to reason.
Interesting that Rush was listed right after the troll item. Rush is a great example of a troll. And, it's obvious that some of his listeners have lost the ability to reason...
:)
Remember when we had a problem with gang violence back in the early 2000's and Dubya appointed Laura Bush as head of the anti gang violence task force? Remember how successful that was?
Ah, good times.
The surprising thing I found is that if you track the number of firearm homicides to the unemployment rate, you see a pretty interesting correlation.
Here's an interactive graph from google that lets you look at the unemployment rate.
http://tinyurl.com/ahwflo6
Notice you get spikes in the unemployment rate around 1980, 1992, and 2003.
Now take a look at this.

Pretty interesting, eh?
BTW, that wiki link came from this article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_violence_in_the_United_States
Violent images in popular culture, hmm.. How about an air-strike on an Afghan wedding party? Does that qualify as a violent image to be edited too? Anybody want to (and yes, I'm parroting the Drone lady from the other thread) consider the violent image of a drone with hellfire missiles committing undeclared acts of war abroad? Now I'm no gun fan but I think popular culture involves much more than film and video games, killing things is our fecking national credo! I hope we get the guns and not waste (even more) time on the games..
I recently watch on TV one of our helicopters shoot up an ambulance, seriously wounding a 5year old girl and a 7 year old boy. Someone in the helicopter remarked don't bring your children to a war zone (the middle of the kid's town). Our trooper who was then trying to save the boy was ordered to let the kid die and go secure the perimeter (words to that effect).
Wow, so it's OK for the U.S. to shoot ambulances and kids,, but boy howdy if they should do that to us.
I think the original gist of the story had to do with is it OK to shoot seven people if one of them might be carrying a gun. I would think this clip is on You-Tube but, I can't find it.
In every discussion about assault weapons and large ammunition clips, it should be said over and over...ELEVEN BULLETS IN ONE TINY BODY.
If you are a responsible gun owner, you can take down a target with one shot. You don't have to spray the area with bullets and hit everything in sight...several times over.
I don't know why a "responsible gun owner" would need an assault rifle with the ability to "spray the area with bullets." ELEVEN BULLETS IN ONE TINY BODY refers to the Newtown Elementary tragedy.
If the MEDIA would stop taking the NRA seriously the American public would follow. The NRA only represents 4 million citizens. That's a very small fraction of our population.
yes but sadly the non-leadership of the NRA does not listen to or help them out. the NRA is noting but the weapons industry lobbyist.
More weird weather news: Winter storm in Lebanon and Israel.
I would just like to note that it's January in Washington DC. I've lived in the DC metro area my entire life. I never remember any day in January getting much above freezing. This weekend local weather reports are that we're going to be in the upper 60's. Who knows, I might even have to turn on my AC in January if it gets much warmer.
This is the most important issue facing us right now. If we don't fix this, we're doomed.
Liberals use their brains to kill failed conservative policies from being reintroduced.
The "mini report" is maxi bovine excrement. Propaganda that's Orwellian is today's report.
I remember consertives during all of the voter suppression attempts by states, saying whats the matter with having to show three or four forms of ID to vote. But some of these same people think it's ok to buy an assault rifle without ID or background checks because it violates their rights. They do'nt want their weapon or bullets serial numbers on any databases. You can go to any gun show and buy a weapon no questions asked. But OMG do'nt go to a polling place without an ID no matter how long you've been voting.
Love the show and content this week. Time for common sense on Gun control, for sure!
This suggestion will bring republicans and NRA to the table: All american citizens whether by birth or naturalization, especially minorities, which include african americans, hispanics, asians and persons of mid-eastern decent, should express their second ammendment rites and purchase atleast one fire arm...
