"His kids go to school with armed guards carrying assault rifles. They sleep all right."

If by "his kids" they mean Sasha & Malia - yes they do, but since he's been threatened with violence since the day he officially declared his candidacy for office, and "kidnapping" does happen, I too would have "armed guards" (Secret Service) at my child's school. And if they "sleep all right" - it's because there are armed guards all around 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.!
The nerve! The NRA has officially become unhinged and irrelevant!
Great point Zora and to add it has not just be this president's kids that have received protection.
Educate yourselves before you believe the NRA crap, and I am a responsible gun owner who does not fear losing my guns.
The Secret Service Protection Mission link follows, yes this means the Bush girls too were protected as were all others. All lives whether children or adults are valuable.
http://www.secretservice.gov/protection.shtml
Of course all President's kids get special protection. They are at much greater risk than your or my kids. There is no real comparison. Talk about apples and oranges.
To say nothing of the kids around them. Someone gets it in his head to take a shot at the children, but that nutjob isn't a good shot, someone else gets hurt.
I have no doubt whatsoever that those in the Gun Cult (and a lot more in the right in general) would just as soon see all of the Obamas dead.
Oh, I think those stupid inflammatory remarks have nothing to do with reality and everything to do with amping up emotions among the gun faction of the Tea Party. When emotion takes over, IQ gets cut by a third or more. Who cares if it's accurate if it achieves its goal of keeping the NRA backers from thinking that maybe the other side has a point.
They're definitely not speaking to anyone else.
The children of all American presidents are protected by armed Secret Service agents at all times. Sasha and Malia Obama aren't being treated any differently than the Bush twins or Chelsea Clinton or any others of the presidential children before them.
Just because our presidents' children are protected this way - to keep them and their classmates safe - doesn't mean that's the solution for every child in every school in the country. Presidents and their families are always considered targets. We fund the Secret Service to protect them because we must. We need to figure out something else to do to protect the rest of the country from random craziness.
There are two important things to know about the NRA's role in the current debate:
1. The NRA does not have a reasonable position and does not bring anything to the table, and therefore should not have a seat or say. This is exactly the point Rachel made on tonight's show with the great troll segment. Asking the NRA to contribute to a debate on firearm safety and violence is like asking the Flat Earth Society to contribute to a debate on NASA's future endeavors.
2. The NRA is a partisan, Republican organization. Nate Silver pointed this out on 538: the single most polarizing partisan issue is one's position on guns. Democrats do not have to worry about losing votes for opposing the NRA because anyone looking to the NRA to tell them how to vote is already voting Republican, and they lost the last election. Like abortion and anti-gay bigotry, gun proliferation is a former wedge issue that the Republican party has so successfully politicized that it can no longer serve as a wedge. These are now base issues, and that base is shrinking.
One has to wonder about the future of the party. They've already lost the middle and thus the majority of the country on social issues, on foreign/military policy, and, most glaringly of all, on taxes (all three legs of their metaphorical stool looking shaky). If they also lose on guns, what do they have left? And how much longer can they go on trying to impose increasingly extreme, increasingly unpopular, minority policies on the entire country?
..Well said
Congratulations, the left has sparked a true class war. Keep up the good work.
how exactly did the "left" spark a class war when it's the NRA's add shooter.
Sorry we started that class war, we will just go ahead and let deranged gun nuts with assault rifles continue to murder our kids. /sarc
Just was 'class' did we start a war with? The people we are confronting don't have any 'class' that I can see.
So I have to point something out that is totally tangential to the post but related to shooter. I've been on this board for about a year or year and a half and I have always thought shooters avatar was a snake eating an apple. Only now have I noticed it's actually a basketball net and thus his name finally makes sense.
tiger...
You're right! I've thought the same...
But, looking at it more closely, did you notice... He missed the basket?
He shoots, he doesn't score...
Annie Oakley: Did you attend "class"?
http://moelane.com/2012/06/09/troll-hunting-101/
Shooter "misses" on purpose. He's made his dopey mission to piss you all off, and you fall for it every time. Then he goes into his bedroom and spanks it. Hard. Because of all of you. I hope at some point he at least buys you all breakfast.
Slappy, I don't think anyone is unaware that Shooter is a troll. If he actually thinks he's getting into any of our heads he is wildly mistaken. Sure we respond to his posts but I think it's really just because it makes us feel good to slap down a truly silly argument from someone on the other side.
They may be aware he's a troll, but I still see people take him far too seriously, or at least you can tell their ire is raised.
I'm not saying "don't refute him," but do it with the knowledge that he doesn't care if he's getting negative attention, as long as he's getting attention. The fact that here we are discussing HOW to attack his talking points, is probably setting up another round in his chamber for Tissue Time Two.
Yes Shooter's pic is quite befitting I must say.
Not only does he miss the basket, he doesn't even hit the rim. Airball.
Just like all his right wing talking point nonsensical posts.
This rhetoric has reached a point where some the more excitable will act out their greatest fantasies. Maybe they already have- 900 Americans have lost their lives since the school shooting just a month ago.
Well Shooter, would you suggest that only Republican president's children have Secret Service protection? Your ability to twist facts and rationalize any nonsense that spews from the right is tragic, and by that, I mean tragic for you.
You keep making the mistake that Pooper can read what you say to him.
??? No, I'm stating that "we the people" should be able to enjoy the same peace of mind Obama has, because his children are actively protected. Not just being told they're "protected" by some words on a paper.
Considering how wrong you got my comment, I'm not too worried.
Considering your name, the idea of reasoning with you is pretty ridiculous.
I guess you like emulating another gun enthusiast, Dick Cheney.
I guess Shooter's advocating every child in school get Secret Service protection.
At least it'll solve the unemployment problem.
I wonder what the cost would be to create a new entitlement program that provides every American citizen with a team of armed and highly trained, around the clock body guards employed by the federal government? Aside from the mathematical impossibility, of course. Taxes are going to have to go through the roof. Not to mention that I thought Republicans liked their liberty and were opposed to the concept of a police state?
If we're talking about redistributing presidential perks, though, I call dibs on Air Force One.
To imply that the President has armed security for his children as a matter of choice is repugnant. The children of presidents have had armed protection for decades when it was NUTS WITH GUNS who demonstrated a clear and present threat. Not just apples and oranges but apples and cardboard - one has NOTHING to do with the other. Just as there are armed guards around the President himself and other potential TARGETS and not around the general population - celebrity attracts a certain level of nuttery that the general population typically does not have to consider. The Right Wing Conservative Media Complex is intentionally fanning the flame of their base, once again leaping to far-flung conclusions before actually hearing what's being said. Class Warfare, Shooter? Lazy and predictable observation. I expected more from you.
So sad the NRA has an obsenely dedicated outlook that will appeal to a small crowd of fringe whackjobs. Their poorly thought out attack on the president will continue to rub many of their members the wrong wayu. All I can say is 2014/16 here we come. There isn't one republican with his head on straight these days and the dems will flatten them-again!
Interesting response from the same fellow who supplied the headline quote, when asked if he agreed with anything President Obama said...
"He's not saying anything anyone disagrees with there," Harris said. "But that's always his ploy."
Say what?
...shaking head...
Way to go, NRA. You just made every gun owner in America sound like a bunch of loony fruitcakes.
you mean as in "just" now, right now, today? Yeah Alva, before this week the NRA was spot on as far as representing gun owners, right...
Lebowsky, I've despised the NRA for years now. They have good safety and training courses, but they're a bunch of right wing nutcases.
One thing that I have actually yet to see any discussion about the 'bad' scenario of arming Principals or other in a school ... has ANYONE even mentioned 1. the emotional turmoil of killing another human (even if they are insane) and 2. what about those stray bullets that might not make it to the intended target!!!
Not to mention, JDs grabbing the gun from the holster and using it themselves..
Or pulling out a gun and making yourself a target, or perhaps provoking a gunman who hadn't yet fired.
Right, Chris. There's a reason that candidates for the police force attend an academy for months of training before they're sent out to protect the public. It's a tricky business and not something we're all innately qualified to do just because we have a pulse.
"Impeach him now," one attendee yelled at a screen in the Cafe Presse in Las Vegas' Venetian Hotel, where dozens of conventioneers had stopped before entering the second day of the Shooting Hunting Outdoor Trade show.
Based on how these people think and feel, that statement could have been made during the gun control legislation today OR 12:01 PM on January 20, 2009 immediately after Barack Obama brought down his right hand.
"Impeach him now" is most likely Neo-Confederate code for "lynch the uppity (you-know-what)!"
The far right republican base including the NRA leadership is like a malignant tumor that has been eating away at the party. Soon it will have consumed the whole thing.
Republicans and the NRA: "Rabble, rabble, rabble! Impeach him!"
This is just nuts.
None of the executive orders he signed today take away a single gun.
The President has done absolutely nothing towards usurping the second amendment.
It would be hard for me to sleep at night knowing WHY those armed guards had to be there.
The President essentially threw the ball back to Congress and said, "I can do some things administratively to help you along, but the goal's going to have to be kicked by you. Or would you rather punt to the sidelines because you're afraid someone will run it back?"
We already know the play. Punt.
Stand down, your guns are safe, nothing will change. The next time "crazy Eddie" points a gun at you, I hope you're certain it's a water pistol.
Of course his children get protection. They are the children of the President of the United States. :D Can they really not see why that would be appropriate? How many inches of skull do these people have??
Well really all they can do is repeat whatever they are told and never think about it. It's just another example of lazy conservative, why think for yourself when others can tell you what to think because thinking is hard work.
Hey whom....long time no see....Hope your doing well....I do miss our debates....
TAP
Hey Whom, TAP says you can debate. Can you show us some of that? You know an actual response with some substance.
WHY does Barry have a double standard? Pretty simple question. Let us see if you can come up with a viable retort.
Another Neo-Confederate who really needs to get over himself.
EntropyRules are you addressing me, FS?
Guilty conscience? Oh wait...those on the right don't have consciences.
You assume I am on the right? Okay, can one assume you are DEMOCRATE? Left wing liberal, flag burning, draft dogging, baby killer?
Not that I am calling you those despicable names, just saying.
I have no doubt whatsoever that you knew exactly who I was addressing, but you chose to do a very bad de Niro imitation (Taxi Driver). Your sneering use of "Barry" to refer to the President and your other rhetoric safely marks you as a de facto Neo-Confederate, and I will continue to identify you as such.
Okay, DEMOCRATE bring it.
Thanks for providing more data. I you DEMOCRATES keep this up I will have enough to complete my study.
You might want to learn to spell, but being a Neo-Confederate, such things are probably too "elitist" for you.
let's go back to the question, see if whomitmay or entrophyrules can succeed
WHY does Barry have a double standard? Pretty simple question. Let us see if you can come up with a viable retort.
Barry and his family is protected by those who bear arms, why then are we attacking the 2nd amendment for others to bear arms for protection?
And the answer is??????????
The answer is that there is no double standard except the one you maliciously invented. That has already been dealt with. And you have yet to explain your gibberish construction "DEMOCRATES". AMF.
What's in the American school lunch-box these days?

Change begins with US. I do enjoy all the salient, reasonable, and pragmatic solutions and commentary on this blog. But, while it's great that we share them with each other, in times like these, it really is a form of intellectual activism that needs to be taken a big step further.
If you've never before written a member of Congress, there are tabs and a map, on the website below, that will tell you how to find members, and others that show you how to direct, address, and compose your email.

If we really want to be an active part of the solutions to our collective mires we need to let the right people know how we feel. We must inundate the email inboxes of our members of Congress with our wishes and strongly urge them to vote the way we want them to vote...even those in the GOP. The "will of the people" is what they love to opine about--well, let those intransigent obstructionists hear, loudly and clearly, your urgent call to action. If we bombard their inboxes with emails (even simply paste in your post with some polite urgency--promises to vote against them if they don't do our bidding--and suggested action!), we will have a better shot at achieving our goals. Talk is cheap...let's give it some real value.
Clisk this link to facilitate that end:

I really do consider this an attack and a real threat to the Office of the President and our security because he is the President. Swift action has not been taken for some reason? Fear of retaliation perhaps but it will just be made worse if something isn't done. Its the duty of the SS to protect the president and here they have failed unless its been held under wraps. The FBI should at least be taking action. Its time to start bringing these thugs terrorists who hide behind the right of freedom of speech to justice. Mr. Holder get to work!
xxx...I don't think the NRA should have brought the Presidents kids into this debate....however, the President shouldn't have used the kids on the stage today either...let's not use our kids as political pawns....they are getting used enough as it is...
This could increases the odds of someone trying to hurt the Obama's children and that is terrible....that is why we should leave the kids out of the debate.
I guess you are more than old fashioned, children should be not only not be heard and seen!
Who are you to censor these young voices! Do you think the President would put his own in harms way? REALLY!
PS I do think the President is trying to keep this from escalating. And against my judgment but I hope his gamble pays off and goes off without any incidents!
No problem with their letters being read....just don't parade them around and use them as pawns and put them in danger....
Wow now do you think they will be targets for the GUN NUTZ! I hope not\! I wonder what other kinds of letters were sent. My guess is the ones that were used were middle of the road to represent a more common view and not extreme one way or the other.
Rachel Maddow on the role of the NRA as trolls
So, the President's pragmatic approach of beefing up enforcement and reinstating earlier gun laws is just too extreme? Yet, the NRA's absurd suggestion that every school district in America start forevermore employing TSA-like teams of security guards is somehow realistic? Well, a place like Newtown, Connecticut, might even have the fiscal depth to absorb that kind of payroll bump. But I know that my kids' school district isn't swimming in any extra money. In fact, they're already cutting staff and good programs that people want and use. So, who's going to pay for all this trained manpower that will be required to provide constant armed guards in every school in America? I suppose they'll just squeeze the money out of somewhere, eh? Heck, with the technology today, why do we even bother teaching children to read anymore? Everything's videos anyway. They're never gonna use it.
The National Rifle Association is just corporate gun-industry lobbyists posing as "champions" of American civil liberties. They are exploiting our Bill of Rights for their own profit. Tragedies like Sandyhook are win-win for the gun industry. It’s fear all around. --Unless, God help us, we can break the cycle of their singular, cynical, circular-logic pseudo-solution: "More guns."
Isn’t this why we have government?
"His kids go to school with armed guards carrying assault rifles. They sleep all right."
From "Gun-show reaction: Impeach him now," covering an event sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation of Newtown, Connecticut, and quite possibly related to this ad from the NRA.
HIS kids are guarded as a national security measure, not to protect the kids per se, exclusively.
I have to stop watching this show,at least on fox I get to laugh at them. Last night show should have been called President Loses The Moment instead its Cory Booker selling jewelry made out of guns. No 800 number to call so we can all get one? We all watch as semi's go flying off the shelves and nothing from the President no executive order calling for a 90,60,30 moratorium on stopping the sales. Every time this President wants something done does he use his bully pulpitand get out there? No he tells the American people to call there legislators and Rachel gets all excited. Yea. At least I can change the channel. Oh by the way Mr. President if they are going to impeach you you should have went out in flames
Also you have to wonder how the victim of one of those gun bracelets feels that they are going to become the latest in fashion wear. Its ok that I got shot the gun is serial number is hanging aroung Rachel Maddow's wrist talk about repugent ideas
The real dictators are Congress and the National Rifle Association. The are preventing gun law to be passed that the majority of Americans are in favor of. Howe is this a Democracy when what the majority are in favor of is completely ignored?
If the majority wanted you to register and show ID to vote, what would you call that?
