Bueller
It was PRO-assault-weapons in the ad. But the smoking gun is something different. it's the alleged ANTI-Israel. That's a pure RW accusation. The average liberal (as opposed to DEM party official) is very critical of the RW Israeli government and would count Hagel's statements on the lobbying arm of that goverment in the US in his favour, not attack him for it. The fact that Israel (not the lobby, not the RW government) features in this ad at all is a near perfect sign that this is false flag concern trolling from the Right.
Bernie Sanders on the Ed Show: "We could only get, to the best of my knowledge, 47 or 48 votes. That was the reality." (link to video- 5:10)
3 votes. For Pete's sake. Does Reid actually think that after a month of him and the White House cutting deals and arm twisting he could not get 3 more fricking votes?

Well the one bit of bright news was to see Spitzer contributing his observations. It is such a joy to listen to someone with a first rate mind express themselves with agility and acuity- whether I agree with them or not. It was disheartening he was not selected for a position in the Obama administration pursuing Wall Street shenanigans- Hopefully Obama can carve out a place for him where he can relaunch himself as a formidable up and coming political star. In the meantime, how about a daytime slot from MSNBC, or a weekend show following Hayes or Melissa?
It would be so cool.
Anyway, thanks for having him on tonight. He gave some plausible reasons to come off the ledge about Mary Jo White. Today was otherwise pretty damn depressing, starting with that lame OFA mail from Messina.
I really hope they are thinking a little more innovatively about data driven social media techniques for electrifying and moving the base in ways that politicians will not just notice, but respond to legislatively.
I think the PBS Frontline story on "The Untouchables" is going to be a starting point for the SEC, Mary Jo White and Elizabeth Warren who sits on the banking committee. For years Republicans have staved the SEC of funds to hire the proper personnel to investigate and file civil and criminal complaints against the mortgage companies and banks. I hope White and hearings before the Senate Banking Committee begin the process of unfolding everything from mortgages to fraud on Wall Street that lead to the economic crash. It is about time that something is done since Holder and Obama have not seen fit to prosecute any major figures involved. I don't know what they are waiting for because it is not a big secret of which people and companies were involved. White and Warren can leave bread crumbs for the Justice Department, but it is the USAG's decision to prosecute. The only way I see that happening is for a lot of public hearings and grand juries convened by the NYAG with the attendant publicity to put the Justice Department on the hot seat.
Thanks for the pointer. I think I missed that one.
SEC funding requires increased budget which will never pass Schumer or the House defenders of Wall Street. But can't Obama use manpower in the Justice work to offload preliminary case work up for the SEC? He even has lattitude to run a Presidential commission run by a knowledgeable Wall Street prosecutor like Spitzer, right?
All the talk on Hayes' show in the aftermath of the fiasco in the Senate was Executive actions. It seems to me Obama could bypass Congressional efforts to choke SEC funding- at least with this sort of option.
There was a presidential commission on the banks and Wall Street's conduct that lead to the crash. This commission and the Senate Committee sent cases to the Justice Department for prosecution. None of the cases ever resulted in criminal charges and there were further hearings by the Senate oversight committee to find out why no criminal charges. The person who appeared for Justice was Lanny Brewer who is chief of criminal division in for the US Justice Dept. He gave a song and dance routine which is cited in the Frontline report. The day after the report aired on PBS he resigned.
Hi Rachel,
I've been following your reports on REDMAP, especially as it applies to PA, where I live. However, in the 1/25 broadcast you implied that the effort is not happening in PA. That information is incorrect. My state representative (R) was happy to tell me that he supports bill 94.
House Bill 94 would change the way the Electoral College votes in Pennsylvania. Rather than all of our electoral VOTES going to one CANDIDATE, the bill would require our Legislature to allot two VOTES to the winner of the majority of the primary and leave the rest to be DISTRIBUTED by the districts-districts that have already been corrupted by gerrymandering.
This is a problem for PA. Please correct your reporting on this so other PA TRMS watchers won't be deterred from following this issue.
Thanks,
Gregory
Sounds like they set this Aaron Swartz up, as an escape goat and on top of it to silence him. What was this let’s crucify the innocent guy again? These documents that Aaron took was Public Domain in which American taxpayers paid for. Now as an American citizen why should someone be denied to this information? Or care to say any American citizen? If our tax dollar’s pay for all this research than as an American citizen you should be allowed access to this information. It can be realized some things are kept secret, because of national security, but come on there is a limit to everything. There is people on wall street that literally steal huge amounts of money from the American people and basically destroy many people’s lives and what do they do about that? Nothing, basically letting them get away with it. Now how corrupt is that or is it all depend on how much money you have to what is acceptable in our society?
These certain politicians keep talking about wanting to privatize schools, but really for what purpose? One we can see for purely huge profits, but what about the flow of the Public Domain information. That is another way of also having a controlled society and limiting people to what they can know or be allowed to think. If anything these Republicans and other politicians want to claim they represent a Democracy, but at the same time would wish to control you on what you should do or think. Now doesn’t that sound a little like Communism and not a Democracy?
Da folks behind the anti-Hagel campaign are perhaps white knuckled because if Chuck Hagel does receive confirmation, the Defense budget would become more tightly symmetrical, leaving out pet-lobbyist-boondoggles that have been so profitable up to now! (See R. Benjamin's Pentagon Wars, HBO)
The true overspending of our welfare state, where private citizens receive taxpayers' monies many times under dubious circumstances, wears a uniform with a lot of brass on it!
I for one am rooting for Mr. Hagel!
Wait -- Mary Jo White prosecuted the Blind Sheik for the '93 WTC bombing? Weren't there documents from that case that revealed specific plans for a 9/11 type attack? Docs that were never translated? Maybe I'm being duped by truthers (I'm not one), but I don't know that the '93 prosecution was so exemplary. If I were in the senate (if there's a hearing in the offing) I'd also be interested to hear what her involvement is with the prosecution of Lynne Stewart (attorney for the Blind Sheik).
In other news, BIG congrats to Rachel and the whole team for the "RedMap" story -- you led the way, and it seems the national media (for a change) has wisely followed. You may have saved our democracy from a tremendous disaster. Thank you!
Re REDMAP and electoral college bill, why are we so shocked that Republicans are being ruthless and, yes, smart in doing whatever it takes to win? I wouldn't be the first to bemoan Dems' comparative fecklessness.
When Republicans overreach, as they always do, the Dems will just gerrymander back in 2020. Long ball.
George- if democrats are actually against gerrymandering and this whole process, they should lead the way in Illinois to change it. It would be totally under their control. They have super majorities in both houses, and the governor. I suspect, though, they really aren't against it. Just against it when Republicans do it.
I guess I'm really old. I remember when governance and ethics weren't opposites. Campaigns and politics were the world of the wily, but the gloves were put away after an election, for a bit, anyway, when the winners worked TOGETHER to represent their states' constituents. Sadly, greed and ideology now reign supreme. And I do seem to recall that the Crusades didn't really go well for those Christians either.
Some of the comments about Mary Jo White being too sympathetic to business interests mirror the controversy over the first SEC chairman, appointed by FDR.
When he was asked how he could appoint such a crook, he replied: "Takes one to catch one."
Rachel, I think you're right that the anti-Hagel ads are NOT coming from the Liberal faction of politics. The tip off for me? That Hagel is "anti-Israel"--not a progressive, liberal issue, let alone litmus test. Quite the opposite, in fact. It would almost establish his bona fides as a liberal for him to be "anti-Israel" (whatever under the sun THAT'S supposed to mean).
