Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) made a surprise appearance this morning at a Senate hearing on gun violence, and read a brief, emotional statement to the committee and the public.
"Thank for inviting me here today," she said. "This an important conversation for our children, for our community, for Democrats and Republicans. Speaking is difficult, but I need to say something important. Violence is a big problem. Too many children are dying. Too many children. We must do something. It will be hard. But the time is now. You must act. Be bold. Be courageous. Americans are counting on you."
The same committee scheduled testimony from her husband, Mark Kelly, and the National Rifle Association's Wayne LaPierre, among others.
Away from the hearing room, it's also worth noting there's been a fair amount of action behind the scenes. USA Today reported that another bipartisan group of senators, including Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), are in talks about crafting a universal-background-check proposal, designed to generate broad appeal.
On a related note, even House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is open to new legislation on background checks, telling the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's editorial board yesterday that closing existing loopholes is "reasonable" and "obvious."
What's more, as Greg Sargent noted, Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.) noted yesterday that she co-sponsored "a conceal carry bill in Nebraska that had a significant background check component," and Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) conceded, "We all recognize the need for more effective background checks."
"All," in this case doesn't include the NRA or its most inflexible allies, but it points to a growing public consensus on an idea that enjoys overwhelming support from the American mainstream.

"Bold" and "courageous"?? If only . . .
Anyone voting or advocating against background checks is a gun nut IMHO. The logical conclusion of someone saying these are ineffective is to ban all gun sales, it's like waving the white flag...
More than just a gun nut, Lebowsky. Try just a batcrap crazy nut. Period.
I think it's very interesting that Jeff Flake is not only on the committee, but says that background checks are common sense and something everyone can support. He's received an A rating from the NRA, and has certainly been an advocate against any kind of gun legislation in the past.
It also should be pointed out that Arizona does not require a concealed weapon permit in order to carry. I don't that to Flake, since it is a state law recently passed, but do think it worth noting when bringing up CCW permits at all.
Interesting about AZ. Headline this morning: 5 hurt in Phoenix complex shooting. 1550 people killed in gun violence since Newtown tragedy.
Every day I read where more Sheriffs are not going to enforce any new gun regulations. We need to start finding out how to remove them from office for failure to enforce the very laws they have sworn to uphold.
Back ground heck harm no one. If it comes back you are clean, you get your gun, if not you don't and shouldn't. Don't see a problem.

I wonder how many of these "quotes" are valid. Insurrectionists like Tinfoil are the reason why gun control is necessary if the US is to survive as a nation.
How long before someone suggests Garanimals body armor?
I imagine the firearm marketed to toddlers that looks like a flying Tinkerbell or a fire engine.. Love your comment, snarky and poignant!
The crazy repubs... "Any new legislation that makes it more difficult for me to get a gun is infringing on my rights as an American citizen!!"
If they only made that startling connection when they began pushing so hard for voter suppresion bills.
And that's not to say that voters and inanimate dangerous objects like guns are the same.

LaPierre isn't worthy to sit at the same table as Gabby Giffords. Shame on him, a million times over. I wonder if Gabby and Mark had a chance to speak to him.
What would be great is to give Mark 5 minutes alone with him...
Wayne LaPierre, a gun nut who wussed on the chance to "kill anything that moves" in Vietnam. Like most winger "patriots," he was a draft dodger - just like his buddy Ted Nugent.
Gabby is Wayne's worst nightmare.
His little toy didn't do its job good enough. Not that he wanted to get rid of her but somebody was able to come back from an encounter with Wayne's toy
What would be great is to give Mark 5 minutes alone with him...
That's something to see. The Right Stuff vs. the wrong stuff.
I want 5 minutes with Wayne first.
LaPierre proved he is insane today in the Senate hearing. "We need in every school, a balistic bullett to hit a fired bullett." Lets see him draw and hit a target that small moving at around 3000/ft/sec.

The NRA is whining about having their Second Amendments infringed upon, but they can't even be consistent in that regard. Why aren't they complaining that they are infringed upon by not being allowed to own machine guns, RPGs, land mines, tanks and antiaircraft artillery?
Why stop with conventional weapons anyway?
I demand my nuclear-tipped Tomahawk cruise missile! My Second Amendment rights are being trampled on by an oppressive government!

How about changing the requirement for owning an assault weapon to having to do 2 yrs active duty in the army or marine corps?
That would do a good job of limiting the people who could get the guns. Very few of the "Patriots" would be able to pass the physical and mental tests for enlistment.
Wayne LaPierre, NRA gun lobby.
Gayle Trotter, member of the Independent Women's Forum, a sub-group of the Koch brothers' Americans for Prosperity.
David Kopel, Associate Policy Analyst at the Cato Institute, contributor to the National Review magazine, and benefactor member of the NRA.
Why do these people have seats at the table of a senate hearing addressing what should be done about gun violence?
Because, there are over 4.5 million moms, dads, kids, a$$holes that make up the membership of the NRA. Take it from Wayne LePoo. the 2nd amendment trumps the right to live without a gunshot wound!

If the NRA truly represented gun owners, rather than gun manfacturer's, they might have a valid voice. The fact is that they spend most of their time and energy scaring their members into knee jerk spending sprees everytime a dicussion on gun safety issues is initiated. Gun sales go up, ammo sales go up, everyone stocking up in case Obama (President Obama, please) comes after our guns. The NRA was agitating against the president before Newtown, when many on the left were expressing disappointment that he had said nothing on guns at all prior to the election. The NRA is eating this up, everytime we try to have a sane discussion and invite them they get a chance to spread their propaganda for free. They won't have a reasoned discussion, because they have to have an oppositional stance in order to remain viable as an organization.
Thank you, Congresswoman Giffords and Mr. Kelly for giving your time to this.
And the point being constantly ignored is where does someone's right to own guns infringes on my right to walk the streets of my community without having to "be armed to the teeth"? Why does the 2nd trump all the others?
Bingo.

Not everyone that owns a gun is a dangerous person. And people should be able to walk around with their guns for their own protection if someone tried to jump them. If police officers are allowed to carry guns without a public uproar, why can't a law-abiding citizen do so?
Amber
Police officers carry guns because it's their job to do so. They are highly and professionally trained to do so. They represent the law. An an ordinary though law-abiding citizen is not.
So law-abiding citizens are all untrained when they purchase their guns? No. If they are carrying them around, most likely, they train with their guns. It's not that hard to learn to use one properly.
Amber
Yes to learn to point and shoot a gun is easy. The hard part is learning when to shoot a gun. Personally I don't trust the judgement of my fellow citizen in that regard. I don't trust myself in that regard!
Former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) made a surprise appearance
"Thanks for inviting me here today,"
that's the salient point in this? really?
lets not get all tin-foiled up over what surely is nothing. i don't think anyone is allowed at the table without permission, so a true "surprise" isn't possible. what almost surely happened is that the committee either invited she and Mark both, or invited her and was told she wasn't sure she was up to it but Mark could speak, and then fairly close to the hearing she decided she would be ok to speak. So yes, given how rarely she speaks publicly and the fact that it had been presumed she wouldn't it still qualifies as a surprise that didn't just sit there with Mark.
There is no inconsistency in the two lines in your post. Try not to hurt yourself making such a stretch.
Not at all riled up. It makes absolutely no difference to me if she shows up at every meeting. In fact she should be at every meeting that she can attend.Just don't act all surprised when she shows up when she's been invited. BTW It wasn't my stretch.
Exactly, Inspector12.
We should police what's written here, and we do it all the time. we value truth over sensationalism, and we decry making mountains out of molehills.
Saying it's a suprise appearance when the committee invited her, doesn't exactly constitute a surprise. Even I knew about it, beforehand.
I believe the article said she was invited, but not expected to speak (her husband was). Perhaps it was worded awkwardly, but her speech was the surprise.
Maybe her husband told her she was invited, since he was; and maybe she just mispoke; she did receive brain damage from that bullet that passed through her head and it's amazing that she has come as far as she has. I did hear that her husband would be testifying, but the TV announcer did not mention anything about Gabby being there.
In typical right-wing fashion, Defective is trying to make a mountain out of a mole tunnel.
According to Public Campaign, a non-profit supporting campaign finance reform and public campaign finance, the Republicans on the judiciary committee have in recent years benefited from at least $700,000 in various forms from the NRA, the NRA’s PAC, or the organization’s employees.
Public Campaign put together its numbers with help from data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics and the Sunlight Foundation’s Influence Explorer. According to the group, since 1998, the NRA’s PAC or NRA employees have given at least $120,000 to Republican members of the committee and their leadership PACs. More recently, since 2008, Republican members of the committee have been aided by over $587,000 in independent expenditures.
The biggest recipient of the NRA’s money is one of the committee’s newest members: freshman Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ), who got a $344,742 boost in independent expenditures from the NRA during his race against former U.S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona. According to Public Campaign’s figures, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) has received $136,639 from the NRA, and Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), the Judiciary Committee’s ranking member, has received $78,526. Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is the only Democrat on the committee who has received an NRA donation. Leahy’s Green Mountain PAC has received $7,000.
(h/t to TPM)
This whole hearing is a side show that the NRA will use to delay the issue even longer. They know the attention span of the general populace is about as long as a 30 second TV commercial, so they are counting on that, and the fact that Congress is completely inept at governing in a logical and meaningful way. Public apathy is the NRA's weapon of choice and they know time is on their side. You just can't legislate morality, and the NRA is a perfect example.
I find Wayne LaPierre is obviously mentally disturbed and I'm not being facetious. His arguments are too self assured that the most reasonable restrictions are not acceptable to the NRA. All that I have read or heard on msnbc, is that even members of the NRA think it's time for stricter background checks. All the murders that have happened since Sandy Hook, all those babies, makes no difference to these mongers. I think they can rewrite the 2nd amendment in a way that it is still constitutional but effective to protect the public at large. They twist everything else and yet "why" is this even an issue?

I applaud Gabby Giffords and all who've spoken out in favor of sane gun laws. But I have very little faith in the Congress. Their only real concern is their next election campaign. I expect them to approve only half-measures.
That Independent Women's Forum, despite its representatives repeated use of the word "choice" -- and let's admit that that wording sounded very peculiar and "off" during the hearing -- is a very conservative organization, as its website clearly says. It has much less to do with women and women's rights than with promoting ultra conservative policies. I don't think it would be incorrect to say Tea Party or "NRA Ladies Auxiliary." Personally, as a woman, I found her ridiculous as a spokesperson for women. I think having her as a "women's" spokesperson was disingenuous, and I resent it. Clearly, she was invited by a conservative Senator. There are conservative women and they have the right to be heard. But that is not how she represented herself, and her incongruous (and repeated) use of the word "choice" should not stand unchallenged. She was a spokesperson for the NRA. She should be regarded as such.
Watch this happen. The NRA are going to make an advertisement in the next few days of Mrs Gabby Gifford saying, the Democrats are showboating a 'crippled, spurn woman' and puttin her up front so to make the NRA look bad? Wait for it.
NRA and other gun owner organization members.
Do your leaderships really represent you and your values? Do you like what they are saying? Do you like their actions? Are they the norm of gun ownership or are they the extremist fringe? Your dues pay their salaries. It is the membership that gives them their power. But are they really representing you or the gun and ammunition manufactures? You don't owe me any answers. But I will tell you that what I'm seeing and hearing from the NRA and other gun owner organizations makes me question the sanity of gun owners. Is that the impression you want me to have?
I quit the NRA a month ago because of hearing Wayne LaPierre talk. I had no ideal he was insane? I don't listen to nutcases who say I need a 100-round (MAG5-100) high-capacity magazine to bring down a deer and a military assult rifle to shot ducks. What we need is a new NRA and with sane people from the ole NRA to follow. Is anyone willing to create and make such a program for all Americans to follow? I would not know were to begin. People need to leave the NRA and show them how disgusted you are with their efforts of arming kooks and lying about our second amendments rights. I don't know of one person in the Untied States whom has had their guns taken away from them. Do you?
Lupe:
Start a face book page very simple invite your NRA friends who think like you and the rest will take care of itself.
good luck and I know that many gun owners agree with you.

The photos of the Newtown Massacre need to be released and entered into the Congressional Record!
I was thinking the exact same thing, but the photos are are kept confidential with the police investigation. However, the Senate can subpoena the photos. I would like to see someone leak the photos just for the shock effect that it would have on most people. Then public opinion would radically change in favor of banning assault rifles. I fear the only gun law that will be passed is background checks and little else.

"The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms....I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or native police." - Adolf Hitler, dinner talk on April 11, 1942; Nazi Germany established gun control in 1938 and from 1939 to 1945, 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.
"All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The communist party must command all the guns, that way, no guns can ever be used to command the party." - Mao Tze Tung, Nov 6 1938
; China established gun control in 1935. From 1948 to 1952 10,076,000 political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated in Kuomintang China, and by 1987 another 35,236,000 exterminations were carried out under the Communists.
"US Senator, If I could have banned them all – ‘Mr. and Mrs. America turn in your guns’ – I would have!"- Diane Feinstein, Statement on TV program 60 Minutes, Feb 5 1995
"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government"
– Thomas Jefferson, 1 Thomas Jefferson Papers, 334
"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed, unlike the people of other countries, whose leaders are afraid to trust them with arms." - James Madison, Federalist Paper #46
Obama & Liberals should beleive and uphold the following sentiments, but do not:
Ten times.
There's a man with a gun over there...

Thank you, Gabby, for having the bravery to speak out. You are an inspiration to all.
Does wayne get that more guns give more opportunity for criminals to get their hands on them?
I have no doubt that he gets it and that is exactly what he wants. To the Gun Cult, more gun usage by criminals means more excuses to demand "More guns! More guns!! More guns!!!"
There seems to be developing a bipartisan rallying point around a requirement for background checks. My fear is that, once we get background checks, Congress will decide that's as far as they need to go.
Background checks would certainly be a step in the right direction, but it's a baby step. As long as high-capacity firearms are available on the open market, we will continue to have more massacres.
If we don't want Congress to do a lousy job on this, we just have to keep up the pressure, even increase the pressure, until most Americans are satisfied with the new laws.

Mr. LaPierre, if the bad guys can't GET the guns, then they can NOT commit the gun crime and there would be NO crime to prosecute. If our house is over run with rats should we not, at the very least, put some rat traps out there?
