Tonight's guests include:
- EJ Dionne, columnist for the Washington Post, senior fellow at Brookings and author of “Our Divided Political Heart”
- Eliot Spitzer, former New York governor and New York attorney general
Here's executive producer Bill Wolff with a preview of what's to come (and here's tonight's song):

I love the Ed Show and I like and appreciate all the hosts. My question to you Rachel is why do you repeat your points over and over and put so much fluff into your reports. I get so frustrated with your repetitions that I turn you off and watch something else. Sometimes you make mountains out of molehills to fill your time. Don't get me wrong, I am a liberal lesbian but I think you need MORE substance and LESS fluff!
Deborah, I'm a L.L. too and I agree with you. I'd like to see less detailed
explanation and more guests. Hearing more than just Rachel's opinion would
be refreshing. I've become more of a fan of shows like Alex Wagner's where
we can hear from a panel and get different perspectives. Sometimes Rachel
gives so much detail (much of which we've already heard from her before) I
want to fall asleep.
Pay them no mind Rachel, there are those of us who love your program, and I say be yourself. I appreciate that you dare to approach subjects everyone else avoids....now that ain't fluff.
You mean to tell me that you sometimes get tired of her repeating herself? Of her constant repetition of a phrase...the incessant parallelisms in her copy? You mean to tell me that that's what you tire of? that that's what sometimes turns you off? That that's what sometimes makes your eyes glaze over? That it makes you sit there and go, "OK! OK! We get it! Move on!" Is that it? Is that what's bothering you? Is that the problem? ....etc. etc. etc....
Good points, Deborah. I get the feeling watching TRMS sometimes that I'm back in Kindergarten listening to the teacher repeat instructions over and over, concerned we are too lame to get them on the first, second or even third try. We really aren't that dull. Besides, the time could be better spent covering more topics. A little less drama and a little more substance would be appreciated.
Speaking about the weird viciousness of the tea partiers that Rachel and EJ Dionne just discussed, my rant:
Obama has got it in for you....
If you've hoarded all that food and ammo and super duper weaponry, if you've prepared to go Galt, shifted your cash into gold, planted your vegetables, found a subservient woman, made your house into a bunker, if you've prepared for the Rapture and carefully cultivated a deep suspicion and hatred of the 'other'.... you really really WANT the government to fail.
You want to be able to say, "I told you so!". You want to be able to drive past empty grocery stores with rioting mobs feeling only scorn and superiority. You want to justifiably shoot your zombified neighbors through the door as they beg for your delicious food. You want to see the dollar bill become useless, the banks to crash, the world economy to shriek grindingly to a halt while you start a new economy based on gold traded between like-minded heavily armed encampments. And finally you want to rapture up into heaven where you get to mock those stupid 'others' dying in horrific and agonizing ways because they did not happen to be white evangelicals from your particular church.
It's the tedious waiting and waiting and waiting for all this to come about that makes some of the guys understandably try and activate the revolution/ crash/ Rapture by themselves, going out to the school, the mall, the theater or their job site to shoot up a few extraneous people.
Facts don't matter. What you think is the only thing that matters. And you know that Obama is going to personally come to your house and take all your guns away and make you weak and feeble like those hippie fascist commie liberals.
With all due respect Rachel, I have no problems with the Obama administration policy to target terrorists. Using the U.S. citizenship argument is a very weak cover. A terrorist is a terrorist is a terrorist. We have no need for terrorists in this world, no matter where they are born. I think Isikoff and NBC are over-doing this issue big time. This issue won't be big news in the Brennan hearing, much to the dismay of NBC, MSNBC, and all the screaming ultra-liberals! This is easy to figure out, and everything the administration is doing is perfectly legal. You should spend most of your air time on critical issues facing the country, such as the slow growth, jobs, budget, sequester, and so on.
I think the main point she and NBC are making is not whether we should target terrorists, it's how, without a trial, do we know that the US citizens so targeted really are terrorists?
Having said that, I have to agree with what Chris Matthews said, we have to fight our enemies. I don't have a real problem with the policy, I just want to know what checks there are on it.
with all due respect dennis21, good laws are designed to make sacred innocent people and to protect them in any and every way - that is why we live. are are not nor ever shall be the sacrificial lambs of the evils which would cause us harm. if you look at history, every mention of the protections due innocent people comes under the heading of "no moleste". but if you are willing to volunteer your loved ones for death, they might object - and you may or may not care about that. GFY.
In regards to Rachel's question ~"How much evidence does Obama need before he decides to target an American Citizen for death?" The answer is exactly the same amount of evidence GW Bush needed to invade Iraq. Nothing. At least no real evidence. This much is already established by the aftermath of the war in Iraq, -a war which killed 5000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis. As a substitute for real evidence, a couple of emphatically stated lies like Bush's claims of WMD, mushroom clouds, and Saddam's drones overflying America can be repeated as necessary.
In regards to Bush's allegation that Saddam could use drones against America, it turns out that WE are the country doing that. The neocon establishment behind Bush (and now Obama) knew Americans would not tolerate these drones. However, they fully expect us to remain silent while the same kind of drones -only in this case US drones that are REAL, -NOT IMAGINARY, -fly over the homes of people in other parts of the world. Are we such sheep that we can be herded and manipulated like this?
Lastly, by now it should be dawning even on the most stalwart Obama supporters here that he is not the man we thought we elected. When measured by his acts, -and not by his words and promises, the picture of this man changes.
ACTS: Obama twice acted at the UN to block lawful resolutions designed to advance the stalled peace process between Israel and the Palestinians. First, Obama used his veto (being the only vote against) to block a UNSC resolution designed to force Israel to stop all Settlement construction in occupied territory, which is something Israel agreed to do when it signed the Road Map. It is also something that MUST happen BEFORE negotiations begin for core issues and final status. This is a specification of the Road Map. It is what Israel agreed to do. Obama blocked that effort to move the peace process forward by enforcing Israel's Road Map obligations. Second, Obama used diplomatic pressure to lobby against a General Assembly resolution to recognize Palestine as a non-member state. This second resolution was attempted only after Obama blocked the first one. The GA resolution passed overwhelmingly. Still, Obama's vote was against it, on the wrong side of history.
In addition, Obama has used the US leadership position in the Quartet to cripple it and prevent advancement of the agenda for peace it was created to pursue. This is one reason why George Mitchell resigned. He saw Obama for what he really is: -a neocon puppet of Israel posing as a democrat.
Look around you: All the political and social horrors we have had to deal with here at home were entirely self-inflicted. Examples include the debt ceiling, the economic collapse, the home foreclosure crises, the fight over health care reform, etc. These things function as a distraction to keep us worried about our homes and our asses while Obama completes the unfinished neocon agenda of the prior administration to topple every Arab state in the mid east.
For me, the most disconcerting part of that thought is the possibility that Obama and Israel are conspiring to create "Arab democracies" in the region, -not for advancement of human rights, but specifically so that Palestinians will have places to relocate when Israel drives them out of Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the occupied West Bank. If this happens, it will be a war crime on a scope equivalent to Hitler's Final solution. And our president will have sullied the public image of the USA permanently by involving us in it.
RE: US finally sues Standard & Poor...
I think it's pretty obvious what's going on. I don't think it's a coincidence that this action is taking place less than a month into the 2nd Obama term.
Obama has been holding back. He needed Wall Street to help get him elected to a second term, so he wooed and cooed them and convinced them he was their friend. Now that he's unfettered by having to campaign, he has that "flexibility" he spoke about to the Russians.
"Unleash the Kraken!"
i wondered about. if that is true, then he also leaked the stuff on killing americans with drones - at least i hope so.
Rachel,
Can you light a fire under MSNBC to raise a national voice and spotlight on any efforts - existing or possible - to prevent or slow down the gerrymandering in the House of Representatives. How can the nation move forward with one house in this condition?
Kevin
not possible. the u.s. govt has been hijacked by "certain" foreign interests who want a war whereby you die, your survivors pay for the war, and then you owe the cost of the war debt and must work to pay it off. This country has been there done that... get a clue already - when you heard landsey F. N. graham say "we need to declare the red guard a terrorist organization" as a prelude to that war via DRONE STRIKES.
Rachel,
Can you and MSNBC give some attention to any anti gerrymandering efforts that may be happening, or that can happen. We need to move the House of Representatives forward. I don't mind losing a fair fight, but we need change. We need it before the next election cycle.
Rachel,
Have you seen this bit of news yet? http://kstp.com/news/stories/s2921464.shtml
TeaBilly Police Chief in Minnesota police chief is under investigation for comments on Facebook where he tore into a woman for having Pro-Choice views. Before he could take down all the evidence people such as myself took screen shots. Posted here: http://blogs.citypages.com/blotter/2013/02/police_chief_zeb_hemsworth_calls_pro-choice_woman_a_piece_of_@!$%#_scum_sucking_baby_killing_bitch.php
Imagine what this man might have said to a rape victim or a assault victim? Scary. Hope he loses his job and he might keep it unless the bright light of attention stays on him.
Thank you for your time!
if you dont believe that backwoods militarists have something coing on in this country i suggest you do some research on General Smedley Butler and the USS Liberty.
I am sooooooooo happy that someone else recognizes the repetitiveness of
Maddow's rants. Its like she just loves hearing herself talk and she is totally
FULL OF MADDOW. She reminds me of a girl that I went to school with.. KIMBERLY
MERRIWEATHER... well thats another story. My question is, why now are you shining
this so-called "light" on Obama's usage of drones...Hasn't he always been using them.
So now is the time that these "alleged" liberals start peeling back this facade and
show their true colors.... Rachel, please take your show to FOX NEWS...perhaps you
can re-unite with UNCLE PAT.
"Hasn't he always been using them."? no. he inherited this disaster from dumya and he wants out. i wish rachel would READ BETWEEN THE LINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't watch the show last night because Eliot Spitzer was on. It's pretty hypocritical of a show that is all abou women's rights him on Whenever I see him two things happen to me, first my skin crawls and then I wonder if he is wearing socks.
I guess what he did is OK with some people but not me. I sat on a jury one time and all the so called high price hookers were young teenagers when they started who had been sexually abused as children. So now when I hear about people in pornography or prostitutes be they call girls or street walkers I wonder what happened when they were children.
Eliot can go redeem himself somewhere else.
I would agree with you...if he weren't one of the most brilliant men in politics today. Alas, there are so few with his talent that I find myself listening closely to him...while holding my nose...
So that makes it ok???? No thanks I don't care how smart you are doesn't excuse what he did. He was the AG of New York when he was caught that makes him corrupt. If he got caught taking money would it still be ok? Prostitution isn't a victimless crime
well then, you should be all fulla creepy crawly with the likes of "screw the wife" vitter and that "steal the wife" thiever ensign. btw, who is boehner seeing now?
