Happy Friday!
Tonight's guests include:
- Jim Cantore, Weather Channel Meteorologist live from Boston
- Bill Karins, NBC meteorologist
- Rep. Luis Gutierrez, (D) Illinois
- Rep. Elijah Cummings, (D) Maryland
And here's senior producer Cory Gnazzo with tonight's rundown (accompanied by what's on everyone's mind):

I Heart Rachel Maddow, so much to expose,, so little time,,,
Do you think she will take the time necessary to walk through the nominee for treasury, jack lew- regarding his off shore Cayman Island investments? He did liquidate when Obama nominated him, so I guess that makes him legit- Rachel can ignore, well, since he is a liberal. Making her, well, a hypocrite.
And I see so many sources for your accusation. As usual
Larry, you seem to be wanting to disbelieve it, but, you just don't seem able to. Would you emphatically state that Obama is as dead set against offshore tax investing now as he was during the campaign, that he would never look the other way and nominate someone who made such investments? Guess that's a pretty simple question.
Lol. Maybe an "Ed poll"- Should Obama nominate people to cabinet positions that have had off shore banking accounts in known tax havens?"
A snow storm is hitting New York and New England in February. Yup, proof of Gobal Cooli... err, Global Warm..., ummm Climate Change. Yeah, that's it, CLIMATE CHANGE!
Bush's fault
Any one notice how much better the weather people are today ? I remember when They said sunshine tomorrow and it rained all the next day. The Earth is an engine. Not that much different then under your car hood. You know. electric fuel injection and variable cam timing. Well except that the Earth is way more complicated, but other than that..... can any of you fix your cars engine faults ? I worked on cars for twenty years and can not work on a new car today without first downloading possible computer fault codes.
Wait I think I know what you mean. Global Warming is just to big for us ? Ok you are right. If killing each other off is still exceptable conduct than global warming is small potatos. You are right. .....my bad.
Well, what can be done? We've elected a liberal President- he recently defended his petro position by showing that more drilling is occuring under his watch that at any other time.
Under Obama's policies, drilling and fracking have flourished. The only line in the sand he has drawn would be the transporting of foriegn oil via pipelines through America.
Rusty - actually the reason we have more drilling is the number of permits issued under Pesident Bush. Obozo has completely shut down the gulf to oil drilling. Other countires have moved in and are now drilling there. Also the EPA is doing it's best to deny permits with Obozo's blessing.
Obozo is committed to 'Green Energy".
Hey Rachel, its friday and you have not updated your itunes podcast since monday! I may not always agree with you, but spending this week without you makes me realize just how much your daily dose of wit and wisdom really means to me...and to my sweetheart too. Gosh darn it! We miss you!!! We like to watch your show together, but we can only do this when you remember to post it on itunes as a podcast. Please keep us in the loop!
Rachel, We love you. Why did you vanish??? its been four days since you updated your podcast (I am writing this on Friday February 8 and you have done three shows but never posted any after monday). A week without you is like a week without sunshine!
Ok , Rachel , see what you have done !!
You give people hope. People start to like each other and then you take way their sunshine? Bad Rachel. Now we know how Obama feels.
Would you agree that the terrorist in California, Christopher Donner, would
be a good target for a drone? OK, he has not been "convicted," but everyone
knows he has murdered several innocent people and if he does not surrender,
highly unlikely, he will go on to murder untold numbers of other innocent people.
Trying to arrest him to take him to trial would probably result in the murder of
several more police since he is reputed to be well armed.
Would you agree that it was permissible to kill the kidnapper of the 6 year old boy in
Alabama even though he was not convicted in a court of law. He murdered the bus
driver and kidnapped and held the the boy about a week before the kidnapper was
killed by the police. I think that was totally justifiable.
Would you agree that an "American" who has defected to another country to
plot terrorist plots on Americans deserves to die to prevent him from
carrying out his intentions? I think that would be justifiable.
Logical discourse LeeFromOhio.
However, If one innocent dies in the process of justice, we all fail. America says that all are innocent until otherwise proven. It is a very important rule. The drone thing is just another example of American contradictions. We send our children to war and murder and then act surprised when they come home broken.
Lee,
No, No, and No!
It is easy to point out the obvious. What about Travon Martin? Not so cut and dry!
Our country is based on a system of law. You and I can have our "opinions" but those opinions do not, and cannot, translate into conclusions without due process of law. We all hate it when it seems so obvious that someone is guilty. But our founding fathers set this whole thing up with the guiding principle that "rather ten guilty men go free than one innocent man be unjustly imprisoned".
Re: It has been argued that when a person decides to join a group like al Queda that they have made their decision and we can go forward based on that decision. But legally, it just doesn't work that way. You don't have to like the process, especially when you are dealing with "obvious" cases, but you do have to use the process. And if you really don't like the process, you can work to change it. Just be careful of what you wish for or change. There is always the law of unintended consequences.
ps Apparently, from previous postings I need to identify that I voted for Obama, I am a very liberal-thinking person, and, on this, my president and my country are wrong.
We need to stop living in fear of every shadow. We need to stand up and be brave and be counted!
Apologies if I missed this, but where was the discussion with Rep Cummings of the Post Office being forced to front fund their pensions - which if they didn't have to do that, they would not be facing a lack of funds.
Ben Franklin was, well , different. The Post Office was his idea. It had three rules. First, your mail would not be read and second we would try to get it there in a timely manner and third, your mail would not be read. I still use the Post Office and would pay 75 cents for a stamp. Would that help ?? My bank charges a dollar to pay a bill there. I still see mail as a good deal. Pay by computer ? Great !! Until the computer crashes or the internet crashes or you get picked off by a hacker or some automatic payment system screws up and I have $200.00 in bounce fees.
My mother still sends me a birthday card every year with money in it. The Post Office has never let her down. Are we letting them down ?
No, you did not miss it - I could not believe it!! I was SO happy to have another show besides Ed's take up the Post Office debacle and then to not only have MPH but also the Congressman not make mention of what CONGRESS did to destroy the PO is atrocious.
MSNBC: I understand you probably want your hosts to be independent, plan their own shows, etc. But, at the very least, you should be sending out a daily email to your hosts with the main topics being covered by everyone else (or that were covered the day before). I like MPH, I think she is very intelligent and she cares. I can't believe she wouldn't have highlighted the real problem if she had known about it.

Perhaps everything was a little bit rushed due to being a substitute; perhaps previously scheduled guests couldn't make it in. But, please - at the very least - each show's PRODUCERS should be aware of the big issues being covered by their main hosts in order to support the story correctly.
Melissa !! , you darn show-boater…. Well done.
Melissa: I can't believe you got the second amendment so wrong tonight. You agreed with Wayne La that the second amendment is about protecting against tyranny. It is not! It is about having an organized militia to protect the country instead of having a standing army.
Please correct this point ASAP. It is a point the NRA has repeated over and over until the lie sounds right. Correct this and take the point away from the NRA.
Wow you just gave me an thought. No more military !! Just us nuts packing rockets. ...
did you hear, that without China, there wouild be no fireworks !? Bad old China. Math ?? Invented in islam. No way !! Yes Way !!! Yes, they were once a very fun people to know. What happened?? .......not sure....
Actually I am sure. Guns or no guns. really ?? In not too long a freaking meteor is going to crash into our Earth and all that sh*t will be immaterial. Or we can stop putting all our money into killing each other and go to Mars where we can have a war in peace. Now why did I just get the feeling that Aristotle wanted to slap me ??
Agreed, halj. MHP, your concession to Wayne LaPierre (TRMS, Feb 8, ’13) was off the mark.
You concurred with hm that the 2nd Amendment is designed to give citizens the means to defend themselves against tyranny. You're both wrong. The doctrine of the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with the right of individuals to take up arms against tyranny. It doesn’t say that, and it doesn’t mean that.
The express doctrine of the 2nd Amendment is that an independent government (free state), so as to protect itself from foreign threats or domestic disorder (security), must have armed forces (well regulated militia). That’s the doctrine, the first 13 of 27 words. The last 14 words state the condition necessary in the 18th century to enact that doctrine — militiamen must not be disabled from bringing their own weapons when mustered. (DC v Heller misreads the 2nd Amendment, but it sure as shootin’ does not affirm LaPierre’s reading.)
The Framers had sufficient rhetorical resources to say, “The defiance of Tyranny, being necessary to the security of a free State … ,“ but they said something else entirely. The idea of the 2nd Amendment is to have an affordable, responsive military by the standards of the day — an ad hoc instead of a standing army, a ready means of putting down local slave rebellions and Indian attacks, for example, without having to requisition Congress or meet its conditions. This has something to do with states’ rights perhaps, but not tyranny.
Now, all that said, individuals may indeed have a NATURAL RIGHT to armed resistance against the tyranny of their own government. That argument is made in the Declaration of Independence and in the Ordinances of Secession. But it is certainly not a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT. In fact, it’s the most extra-Constitutional right there could be, because its expression (whether by Colonies or Confederacy) is the violent overthrow of the government thus constituted.
There is no chance, not in the most far-fetched reading of anything the Framers said in the 2nd Amendment or elsewhere, that they meant to confer upon citizens a legal right, under pretext of tyranny or otherwise, to shoot government officials. The Constitutional protection of citizens against tyranny resides, for example, in the more profound provisions of the Bill of Rights (Amendments I, IV, V,VI). It is found in limits to executive authority, in authorizations and consents required of Congress, and particularly in regular and frequent federal elections. Where it cannot be found is in “our 2nd Amendment remedies.”
Friday's show was a big disappointment, the guest host was nowhere near as serious or as pleasant to watch as Rachel or Ezra are. If Rachel had the night off, where was Ezra? The Beyonce section was downright offensive, where the guest host mocked christians and equated biblical passages to fairy tales. When did this show decide it hates Christians? I've been watching for years, and I am Christian. If you are going to allow a guest host with such rediculous opinions, you need to write her a reasonable script and tell her not to say anything you didn't write for her.
Steve Kornacki or Krystal Ball would have done fine I'm sure...there are lots of good options for substitutes.
Oh no you didnt. Yes Melissa is a very opinionated and strong willed woman. And yes, she would probably argue in your behalf to the cop that had just stopped you for speeding until it got you arrested. But she would also be the one bailing you out of jail. I think Melissa is very sexy.
Now as far as religion goes, I see more similarities then differences between archrival Christians and Islams. They both downgrade women and treat them as personal property. They both believe that killing the other guy will solve their problems. Neither of them can tolerate scrutiny or non-believers. So one guy floated up to Heaven by himself while the other rode a horse? Now that is worth fighting over. Really? I wear my hat with the bill to the left, where it should be, and you wear your hat with the bill to the right. That is unexceptable.
You are clearly pretty dumb. You can't group all christians together like that, and you can't assume that someone is republican just because they're christian. Obama is christian, he is a democrat. I am also christian, and I've supported Obama since before he had even won his first presidential primary. Do you have any idea how many christians voted for Obama this year? Check the numbers, he wouldn't have won re-election without us. Your comments were idiotic, and completely detattched from reality.
What MHP read leading into the introduction of the Illinois politician was inaccurate and contradicted what she later read. She read "a city where local gun laws are only as strong as national gun laws" in an attempt to say that laws in surrounding states were failing Illinois. I can tell you that gun owners I know will avoid travel to Illinois in fear of having their lawfully owned firearm confiscated, even when transported unloaded and secured in accordance with federal law. MHP then introduced the politician and said "the city actually has very tough gun laws". Let's think about this for just a minute, Illinois has basically restricted lawful gun ownership into a closet and their gun crime rates soar because people willing to violate those laws acquire guns and perform crimes on law abiding citizens who cannot defend themselves because they do not carry. Implement those laws federally and only criminals will have guns by definition. All crime is a symptom of economic lack of opportunity. Because we are not willing to do the hard work to create good economic infrastructure, we will continue to have crime. The Swiss have guns, all able bodied citizens are issued guns as part of their national militia - and yet because of their good economic situation they have low crime, including low gun crime. The bad economy also reduces the tax base which is where law enforcement receives funding - so less ability to resolve crime.
A 13 year old girl was raped and murdered in Kake, Alaska, Tuesday night. She was found in the Presbyterian Church. AK Troopers are investigating, nothing is known for sure at this point; no one is being held. Kake is a small, isolated Tlingit community - but that should not make it insignificant. It's still part of America.
Please don't let this story go unnoticed. Please help prevent crimes from being ignored and hidden away. Please don't allow people to believe perpetrators of violent crimes against women up here can get away with it because we are isolated.
Please mention this situation on your show.
