Associated Press
It struck me as amusing last week when former Vice President Dick Cheney, complaining about proposed measures to reduce gun violence, complained there "isn't adequate regard for the rights of law-abiding citizens." Given Cheney's track record while in office, it seemed like an odd thing to say.
But these remarks from the weekend were even more striking.
Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Saturday night that President Barack Obama has jeopardized U.S. national security by nominating substandard candidates for key cabinet posts and by degrading the U.S. military.
"The performance now of Barack Obama as he staffs up the national security team for the second term is dismal," Cheney said in comments to about 300 members of the Wyoming Republican Party.
Cheney, a Wyoming native, said it was vital to the nation's national security that "good folks" hold the positions of secretary of state, CIA director and secretary of defense. "Frankly, what he has appointed are second-rate people," he said.
There is a certain oddity that underpins Cheney's whining. For many political observers, the fact that so many national security policies from the Bush/Cheney era are still in place is cause for alarm, though Cheney himself seems eager to suggest this administration has departed radically from his predecessor.
But really, that's just scratching the surface of what's wrong with Cheney's odd perspective.
Whether you agree with their positions or not, there's nothing even remotely "second rate" about John Kerry, Chuck Hagel, and John Brennan. These are experienced, capable individuals, with considerable expertise in their areas. Indeed, Kerry has a broad diplomatic background and was very nearly the president; Hagel is a decorated veteran and sage voice on the use of force (Cheney never got around to serving in the military before becoming the Pentagon chief); and Brennan actually served in the Bush/Cheney administration.
If the former V.P. has specific complaints about these nominees, I'd love to hear them.
But the real kicker here is Cheney's confidence in his ability to make personnel assessments. Obama's team, in Cheney's mind, is "second rate," but his team -- filled with notorious names like Rumsfeld, Addington, and Libby -- which oversaw some of the most spectacular failures in recent memory, was top tier?
Seriously?

Cheney has grown even more delusional in his old age.
No, with age he is seeking greater thrills.
No longer have actions like torture and other forms of Sadism sufficiently naughty to give him a rush. Brennan is too limp wristed in his pretended ignorance of the perverse debauchery of the US's moral high ground.
It was profoundly embarrassing to him to see his accomplice Brennan be forced before the Senate to engage in the pretense that he doubted what is widely believed in the CIA- that the war crime of torture was effective is saving US lives. Is that such an unfair inference? The producers of Zero Dark Thirty claim this was a sentiment conveyed to them in their briefings with the CIA, and Brennan himself stated in his testimony that the view was uncontroversial to him until he read the Senate report.
If Cheney's is a delusion, it is a collective delusion that has been institutionalized in the immense secret bureaucracy of the CIA. The motto of the CIA is "And ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free".
.
Perhaps it is finally time to tell the truth about the torture and the targeted killings.
Something about "incestuous amplification" according to what certain circles explained to that Nobel Prize winning guy about the Cheainy Way .
Second rate: Takes one to know - - - but in a state of delusion, that "knowing" is quite... silly, if you think about it.
Re ""incestuous amplification" You have your finger on something FRP. The language of deviance and insularity applied to the perversity of the cognitive dishonestly. The irony of such incestuous group think is that it aggressively seeks to eliminate thoughts deviating from the group norm. In other words its deviance relies on eliminating any inner voices deviating from the group think. It is the cognitive dynamics of the Penn State and Catholic church perversions.
It essence, the drone program has normalized the deviant. Accurate indication of civilian deaths is counter to the group's goal of demonstrating success, and the perversity of drone video snuff films can be safely conducted under the covers.
Based on the information the CIA has provided, Feinstein forcefully insisted that the CIA’s drone strikes kill only “single digits” of civilians annually. Yet she has taken the CIA's word for it, as did Brennan. This is Management 101. Sure- there's nothing wrong with trusting people you have delegated authority to- in fact the most healthy teams have high degrees of trust. However, anyone with management experiences knows that if you do not measure the performance of your subordinates, and simply accept their self-assessment that it is certain your operation will go off the rails, and do so quickly. Congress must conduct a thorough and intrusive audit into the drone strikes conducted. This will require not just cursory investigations by staff, but a methodical examination of the video and other data on the strikes to independently assess the number of civilian deaths due to the strikes.
Excuse me, John, but I am unfamiliar with the incestuous group think you speak of regarding the Catholic Church. Are you saying I, and others like me, are deviant Catholics since we do not adhere to the "incestuous cognitive dishonesty" of other Catholics?
Just what are you saying?
No one on earth could eliminate my own thoughts or ideas unless they had a scalpel in hand. I am not and never was into group-think.
As for Dick Cheney, he finally got a heart but he lost his soul a long time ago...and it shows.
Literally, the "incestuous amplication" that FRP refers to has to do not with incest but an epistemic trap. Take for example the idea of confirmation bias- that individuals and groups tend to look for voices that mirror their own perspectives- to find confirmation, not contradiction of their views. It is a style that is hostile to pointing out one's own culpability in evils being perpetrated. Such cognitive harmonization is sought instinctively as a means of gaining group harmony. The resonant meming within the group tends to amplify its group narcissism
So no- I was not making a blanket association of any church or sports organization. As for the Catholic reference, I was referring to the group think of authorities in particular dioceses that have conspired to deal ineffectively with pedophile priests. My understanding is that the church is making efforts to correct the situation.
Every organization is susceptible to this weakness. Chris Hayes points to several in his book Twilight of the Elites that have led to a general weakening of the public's trust in its institutions.
Cheney was working under Rumsfeld, as they sold nuclear weapons technology to North Korea:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/may/09/nuclear.northkorea
No, we did not forget...
John Messerly,
I understand that it had nothing to do with incest. I understand the phenomenon of which you speak.
Cognitive harmony would certainly be sought amongst groups of people, as it reinforces their beliefs.
One can learn a lot, however, by those who dissent from the collective view. I guess that is what I was trying to say. The result of too much group-think leads to cults which prohibit dissent. That, of course, is very bad. It needs to be discouraged at all costs.
What happened in the Church and at Penn State were examples of how deleterious group-think can be. The Church is certainly trying to eliminate pedophiles from its ranks, and no longer will cover up this horror.
If a college of Reverend Mothers had an equal vote to the college of cardinals in election of the pope, then it would be a step in the right direction. EJ Dionne was on Matthews' show today and remarked that he tells his daughters, "The good news is that there will be women priests in the Catholic church. The bad news is that the Catholic church moves very slowly and this may take 200 years."
"incestuous amplification" and "groupthink"
One could make an argument for "groupthink gone amok" when considering the behavior of Penn State fans and students, and Catholic congregations rallying to protect their institutions.
College administrators and hierarchy of the Catholic Church, however, were fully aware that people under their authority were committing illegal and immoral acts. I don't see their behavior as fitting the classical definitions of either groupthink or the military's "incestuous amplification".
The knowledge that you could face the loss of a privileged position, the loss of your personal reputation, be responsible for significant financial losses to the institution that provides you with long term financial security, and possibly be subjected to imprisonment with unsympathetic and physically rude cell mates - could lead one to support a lie. It would not be unlikely that other individuals in the institution might view the situation in a like manner. You would then have a group - agreeing on a common course of action – to lie. Using the terms "Groupthink" and "incestuous amplification" to describe their behavior implies that they too were victims - of some irresistible group dynamic.
Theirs was and is a cold, perfectly logical decision – no perceived need for group harmony or fear of group coercion is required. They have simply been figuratively and literally just trying to protect their own individual and collective asses.

sex always is a hot button. more important, the drone killing cover-ups and the big lie.... this notion that there is "hardly any collateral damage" is just that big lie. we know from the evidence that dropping bombs causes collateral damage. how much, depends on the size of the bomb and how many others are near by. so, in reality, in the past four years, how many collaterals have been killed or injured? do we have info on that? and if so, can we get it? bombing may be on target, but the explosion has huge ramifications, which we describe as killing civilians.
When you get a heart transplant, no new connections are made between your brain and the donor heart. On the other hand, even before the transplant, it's not clear that Mr. Cheney had any active neural connections. Hubris is a major euphemism for this person's behavior. A more appropriate description would probably not be suitable for a public blog.
John Kerry, Chuck Hagel, and John Brennan cannot match Dick Cheney's military experience.
Also, none of them have ever shot a civilian in the face.
Good thing I wasn't drinking my coffee as I read this.
5 deferment cheney sold nuclear weapons technology to North Korea..
romney too.
here:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/may/09/nuclear.northkorea
oops, age old secrets coming back to haunt you?
He would know about substandard people being selected to Office.
Chuck, No one would know better than old heartless, soulless Dick Cheney, the sadist with poor aim and poor choices.
I am waiting for Anne Rice to do his biography.
I'm surprised that new heart hasn't tried to jump out of his chest yet. I can't imagine it likes it there.
LOL! That heart tried first to jump out of the ice chest. It did not want to go into an even COLDER chest!
Good one India. In this case, the claims of being one of the few
"heartless" humans- dead on accurate. If they had an artificial heart for him, it would be absolutely fitting.
Also, I agree with the person saying here - the photo is LOL - accurately capturing the man. I would bet there are many just like this one.
Dick Cheney's view of the world is that the US is surrounded by enemies, who want to kill us. which countries what to do this? russia? china? iraq? afghanistan? pakistan? n. korea? iran? the reality is that none wanst to make war with the US. this kind of thinking is paranoia based. and as such is delusional.
I would say that being dissed by Cheney is the greatest seal of approval that anyone could hope to receive. I'd be worried if he DID approve of Obama's choices or actions!
i like this comment,,being approved by cheney ,,,it would be scary, being he was a heartless vp even his own heart did not like him,,, when he got the transplant i thought he did not deserve the new heart , no other human being except boehner ,cantor, ryan, etcis is as low as cheney
Yeah, one would think the new heart could lead to more compassion.
But… no….. apparently not.
Cheny is just another example of how
happymonomaniacal having lotz and lotz of money makes a person.Five Deferments Dick was monomaniacal long before he got his payoff from Halliburton.
a website for you...here:

keep them legal.
peace to all*
Somebody admit this clown to an asylum!!! Please!!!
Na, they just need to do with his conscience what they did with his heart, replace it with a fresh one.
NeedmoreCoffee: Chaney does not have a conscience to replace.
Cheney's heart transplant is a good argument against organ donation. That being said, I still am a future donor as most people on the list are definitely more in need than I would be at that point.
How could Cheney have ever had a heart replacement, which infers that he had one to begin with.
i'd put cheney's opinions of competence and patriotism right up there with those of joe mccarthy and his former puppet.
You're all misunderstanding him...seeing as how he was no better than a fourth-rate congressman and a fifth-rate VP, this was meant as a compliment.
Cheney still believes that he's the president.
Cheney is another one who is a legend in his own mind and a horror in nearly everyone else's.
You nailed it, India.
Once again, I think you are missing something here Steve. Cheney is an old-school, cold-war, American Imperialist. Of course he thinks that Brennan, Kerry, and Hagel are not "up to snuff". They don't toe the imperialist line.
Bingo!! we have a winner. I also like Cheney's subtle, Authoritarian code words..."good folk" meaning wealthy white men, whom share Cheney's own paranoid delusional worldview.
Social Dominating Authoritarian.

"... jeopardized U.S. national security by nominating substandard candidates for key cabinet posts and by degrading the U.S. military."
Yes, Dick, unlike the Mafiosa Mis-administration that you were in. Remember "heck ova job Brownie", how about Rumsfeld, or Addington - all traitors that belong at the Hague! You and George W. ought to be at the Hague also awaiting trial!
Really? Are we shocked to find out that yet another rich old white man is delusional?
Pretty funny coming from the guy who brought the coffee to Reagan's meetings.
Second Rate gets passed on genetically: The Porker Daughter.
He's just a rotten old man. First-rate, though.
That echoes Lincoln's critics -
http://www.theatlantic.com/past/docs/issues/95nov/lincoln/lincrite.htm
1956 Getting Right With Lincoln by David Donald
Lincoln they thought a simple Susan , a baboon, an aimless punster, a smutty joker. He left the highway of principle to pursue the devious paths of expediency. A "huckster in politics," sneered Wendell Phillips, "a first-rate second-rate man." A Springfield neighbor called him "The craftiest and most dishonest politician that ever disgraced an office in America." "If I wanted to paint a despot, a man perfectly regardless of every constitutional right of the people," cried Saulsbury of Delaware in the Senate, "I would paint the hideous form of Abraham Lincoln...."
Well done , carry on ...
#14.1 FRP,
The London Evening Standard portrayed Lincoln as "that concentrated quintessence of evil, that Nero in the most shrunken and detestable form of idolatry, that flatulent and indecent jester."
He was often referred to as a fiend and a buffoon.
This just shows you that we need to go back through history to find words to properly describe Cheney.
That's just piling on , gonna need to flag that . It is good to see the cousins attempting to bring Disraeli and Victoria in from the "Big Game" to project their addeld jingoism .
Good Show ! Carry on ...
Yeah Dick we need more people to get us into unneeded boots on the ground wars, so your buddies at Halliburton can cash in. Oh how we miss you.
here joca 41, for you:

cheney...ethics...war/halliburton..
The man is good on gay rights... It's literally everything else...
He has a gay daughter. Without her he might have no redeeming human qualities.
Given Cheney's history with personnel searches, I don't think this is surprising. Historically, the only person he tends to find suitable for any given job is himself.
Also, the VP who shot a guy in the face while in office probably just shouldn't be talking about guns.
Well Scooter was a Libby
uh huh
Scooter went a Libby
uh huh
Well we don't care what scooter says
Cause he jus a Libby any old how
Scooter went a Libby , uh huh
Rachel, I would love to see you interview Cheney on your show. Send the invitation with chocolates, this time.
Doesn't matter. He's a Republican, he said Obama's candidates are second tier. It is now incontrovertible truth and anyone who dares claim otherwise hates America with the intensity of a thousand white hot suns. Republican claims never have to be true, they only have to be made thus becoming Truth.
Wow , succinct , punchy ,
Wait , wait !
That face that somehow I trust .
It may embarrass you to hear me say it ,
But say it I must , say it I must :
You have the cool , clear
Eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth ;
Yet there's that upturned chin
And that grin of impetuous youth .
Oh , I believe in you .
I believe in you .
...
To see the cool , clear
Eyes of a seeker of wisdom and truth;
Yet , with the slam-bang tang
Reminiscent of gin and vermouth .
Oh , I believe in you .
I believe in you .
I cut out more than half , but this lyric is so excellent it can walk on one line .
Let the senile old war criminal continue to rave to the criminally-insane, the only people stupid enough to believe him.
Yeah, Cheney knows he has nothing to lose! He's been dead for years! -Kevo
This picture of Cheney is pure gold. Does anyone have the context?
" will someone please stand up so I can shoot you in the face"
I did not hide in that undisclosed bunker during 9/11!
The Republican poster boy for gun safety.
Why isn't Dick in jail and why do we keep paying attention to him? Talk about has-beens!! Must have been a slow news day - Dick Cheney speaking to 300 republicans in Wyoming - really?
It's a shame that there are still that many ingnorant people out there. 300 huh!
There are only 302 people in Wyoming. I am the lone resident liberal, and was not invited. Wyoming, where conservative is synonymous with virtue, is the only place where' Dickey feels loved.
if obama is for the people, some of bushes polocies should be revised or dumped, instead they are there and he is adding to them, america is broken, our presidents are sworn to up-hold and protect our constitution, not tear it to pieces.
This rabid dog deserves to be terminated with extreme prejudice. Just look at the hatred exploding from his face !!!
