Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) complained on Fox News yesterday, "All [President Obama] does is go out and make speeches" instead of negotiating with lawmakers like him. Around the same time, on "Meet the Press," Republican strategist Mike Murphy argued that the president should "stop the speeches" and "stop the politicization." Also on "Meet the Press," Republican pundit Michael Gerson complained about the "outside game [Obama's] been pursuing," in which the president hits the road, "beating up on the Congress."
It's not exactly subtle: Obama's GOP detractors aren't happy about the president taking his message directly to the public though outside-the-beltway events.
Then again, it appears the White House doesn't much care. When Obama delivered a big speech on preventing gun violence, he did so not in Washington, but in Minnesota. When he spoke on immigration reform, the president skipped D.C. and traveled to Las Vegas.
The president will deliver the State of the Union from Capitol Hill tomorrow, but over the weekend, the White House announced the president's plans for the rest of the week.
After Tuesday evening's State of the Union address, the President will travel to three different communities to discuss proposals, unveiled in the speech, that focus on strengthening the economy for the middle class and those striving to get there. On Wednesday, February 13th, the President will travel to the Asheville, North Carolina area for an event. On Thursday, February 14th, the President will travel to the Atlanta, Georgia area for an event. On Friday, February 15th, the President will travel to the Chicago area for an event.
To be sure, this is hardly the first time a president has taken a post-SOTU road trip, but these excursions come against an interesting backdrop.
For one thing, we have Republicans urging Obama not to take his message directly to the public, which should probably be a sign that the president is doing the smart thing, since his detractors probably don't have his best interests at heart.
For another, keep in mind, the president played the game for much of his first term the way the GOP wanted: staying in D.C., huddled in closed-door meetings trying to find new ways to meet Republican demands. It appears Obama has learned a lesson he intends to apply to his second term: the old way wasn't constructive, didn't pay dividends, and failed to make GOP policymakers more cooperative and/or interested in governing.
Whether the new strategy works or not remains to be seen, but it's a deliberate shift -- Obama hopes to change the political environment, and create new public pressures, by making his pitch outside Washington, whether Republican lawmakers and pundits like it or not.

Senile old Wet-Start Johnny complaining along with the rest of the dildos demonstrates that even a moron knows when they're about to be hit with a Louisville slugger.
Or a dick rambone, if you're hitting a dildo with another rather large dildo.
That's Good Mr. President , Do everything and anything to Annoy these repTards , Just WHO do they think they are anyway - Bunch of Goofballs ...... Piss-Them-Off - Always , when you can ...... Hell , for that matter , it doesn't matter to them What you do - they Will NEVER Agree anyway ----- So , Trickle-down on Them ! They R a bunch of Sociopathic,Psychotic,Greedy Idiots ! YKWIS.....
Anything that annoys the goobers is a good thing. Ramp it up till they're in a pants-shhitting fury.
Or he could do it GWB's way and just go on vacation all the time.
The Republicans better get on board with President Obama's agenda because we the people are.
Indeed, the party of free stuff is America's salvation.
And what, pray tell, is the GOP the party of Shooter? Can you enlighten us?
And what, pray tell, is the GOP the party of Shooter? Can you enlighten us?
Why, they're the party of the shooters.
Pain, that doesn't even make sense. Want to try a rephrase?
Are you really that obtuse? Wait, don't answer that...
Isn't that "free stuff" talking point getting kind of old? What kind of person divides their brothers into Makers and Takers? Man it must suck to be so morally and intellectually broken.
Ah Shooter, tell me again who is getting free stuff?

If the GOP doesn't like it, that's how you know you're doing it right. This applies to pretty much anything in life, since those jerks are consistently on the wrong side of history, economics, rights, and even skin and hair care (Boehner and Trump, for two examples of the last).
Apparently, by the people and for the people, doesn't mean anything to the Republicans, and as far as "beating up on congress", if they didn't hang themselves out there like punching bags, they wouldn't get hit as often.
Wow. These Republicans are making these complaints behind closed doors, inside the beltway, in private, good-faith negotiations, right? Otherwise it would be... what's the word... hypocritical? Yeah, that's the word. Hypocritical. Going directly to the American people (on the TV machine) to complain that the President is going directly to the American people (on the airplane machine)... makes me long for the heady days of self-awareness.
Aren't they supposed to voice their opinions in some quiet room?
No. That's what they say everyone else should do. It's just part of the right-wing mentality: they get to have their say and nobody is allowed to say anything in response.
Consider this concerning that bakery in Oregon that refused to make a cake for a same-sex wedding. Specifically, take a look at the part quoting someone as saying "He should be able to freely deny them without all this backlash" (emphasis added). When they speak, that's their right. When we speak, we're just out of line. This criticism of Obama is just another example of that attitude.
How dare the president speaking to the people. He might end up listening to them!
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) complained on Fox News.....on "Meet the Press," Republican strategist Mike Murphy argued...Also on "Meet the Press," Republican pundit Michael Gerson complained...
...becaue I'm sure that the first thing these jokers are going to do, right after they finish delivering their whining rants from their soapbox, is get right back to the negotiating table themselves.
The Republicans would much prefer the POTUS to be quiet of course. They don't want their divisions highlighted...
McCain is just mad because if he were President (which he's entitled to be, of course) then he would be making war across the Middle East instead of making speeches.
F#ck you John McCain!
I wonder if the GOP will be bitchin when Pres. Obama takes time out for this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/11/clinton-romesha-medal-of-honor_n_2661644.html
McCain will certainly be outraged -- after all, that medal should have gone to him.
Maybe Republicans like John McCain should take lessons from the Pope. "... in today's world, subject to so many rapid changes and shaken by questions of deep relevance for the life of faith, ..., both strength of mind and body are necessary, strength which in the last few months, has deteriorated in me to the extent that I have had to recognize my incapacity to adequately fulfill the ministry entrusted to me."
Wow, I did Nazi that coming!
(I'm here all week!)
Most excellent, Trollop!!
Translation: We quit now. (If ONLY)
Why does this remind me of the fuss that was made about translating the Bible & saying Mass in the vernacular so that average folks could understand & possibly read on their own? And form their own opinions?
Funny how the GOTP are saying this on the morning talking head shows. Maybe if they were, I dunno - at their jobs in the Congress instead of whining on the talk shows, there might be a chance to meet?! Who knew....
I think we are unfortunately beyond the two parties meeting on anything. They are polar opposite on almost every issue - and they know it. What good would being in the same room do?
Zora is correct. McCain is doing the same thing the president is doing. Pot, kettle, black.
So McCain going on talks shows every sunday is different? The president is elected by the people and as such he has a right to go out to the people and give talks on topics of interest to said people. What the GOP doesnt like is anyone showing the voters that the GOP is not doing their job
No problem with the travelling, but the speeches are what they are - a political backdrop on a specific issue. The message is the same whether it is said in Nevada or DC. But somehow - maybe to the majority of attention deficit voters - seeing the President talk about immigration reform in Nevada, they will pay more attention(?). This type of message delivery seems to imply that the location and/or props (if any) behind a politician somehow will help the average voter understand the issue more.
There is less opportunity for local media to creatively edit the President's speech when it is given locally and broadcast live. Hannity, Limbaugh, and O'Reilly aren't there to tell the voters (or the local journalists) what Obama "said".
PatrioticLiberal,
The speech is still carried nationwide by the networks, so Hannity, Limbaugh, Maddow, etc. can and will comment on it. Not sure why you think the local media can't do creative editing - I've seen it countless times. The local stations also have bias...like the local Fox news of NBC affiliate.
-- Except local people are at the events so it's easy for them to spot "creative editing" in the local reporting.
OK...so a handful of the American electorate will get the speech unedited. :)
And based on that those couple of hundred folks that saw the unedited verson are what will get the legislation passed....even though they have nothing to do with crafting a bill. And virtually the entire country will see "edited" versions of the speech on the networks, AND Congress - whether they are for or against the legislation - will not really change their stance. Again, these "location" speeches are just for political posturing. They will not change any votes in Congress.
With President Obama bringing the policy challenges directly to the public, the GOP loses some control over (mis)information channels that it has relied heavily upon in recent years. There is something to be said about those who cannot conduct their business in the light of day, and it is not complimentary in the least bit.
See my posts above (#16, 16.2 and 16.4)
shorter gop:
waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
This just in! "(Fill in the blank) annoys GOP!" After all, there's science, and logic, and rational thinking. What's next? GRAVITY! Does "gravity" offend the GOP? What about "Post It" notes & Cheez Whiz? And what about SPAM in a can, my fellow Americans? What about that secretly Muslim, secretly Kenyan, secretly gay, secretly gay married, secretly murdered by Hillary (You know who) canned abomination on all mankind? ARRGH!
They just hate it when he does that! Informs the people directly, instead of letting Fox & Friends tell them what he said ...
I don't suppose that any of the people on the Sunday morning talk shows asked the complainers how well trying to negotiate with the repubs had gone during Obama's first four years. And why it would be any different these next four.
IT”S IN THE WORDING!
How many people really trust the polls, especially when they have their own agenda? The Rasmussen poll Reports are more genuine than the ones administered by the mainstream newspapers, who have a lean towards the Liberal biased idea of government, who already have partaken in a whole bunch of propaganda thrown into the daily headlines about illegal immigration. Alas, much of the media starves us of the truth and repeats the same old rhetoric about illegal aliens not stealing jobs from the 23 million American workers. Illegal Immigration is building into a verbal crescendo of volatile arguments and as most of us know, that if you were around in 1986 the word of Washington, talks with a forked tongue. THEY SIMPLY LIE TO US, ABOUT THE COSTS, THE SUPPORT AND THE PANDERING TO THE LARGE MINORITY GROUPS?
After the great amnesty nothing occurred that could be called real enforcement, the special interest groups saw to that. The promise of no more illegal immigration fell on deaf ears of both Democrats and Republics with very few calling foul and illegal immigrants kept on pouring in to this nation. The great border fence we were promised was cut short, because underhanded lawmakers secretly cut off most funding. That is why the two fences parallel to each other, for the rapid transit of Border Patrol vehicles in between the two barriers was ignored. Even the single fence we have today is no match for the drug cartels and the continuous insurgents of impoverished illegal migrants. Even a visitor tracking system is not up to the restrictions as seen in other countries, so we huge influx of foreigners that never go home. Today we have payback by the progeny of the 1986 Path to Citizenship pyramid of cause and effect. The current Dream Act is the cause, of not only the original amnesty, but years of unconcern of those we elect? From the same cause has been the enacted Family Chain Migration of the first naturalized citizens, were than able to petition for their family members.
Then hidden amongst those families are other relatives or friends, who slipped into America and hide in plain sight, with a job and probably picking up welfare. This and more under President Obama’s sanctuary umbrella, as do thousands of pregnant moms, who have claimed citizenship for their many offspring and living of the public entitlement programs, because of the inaccuracy of the 14th Amendment. This must be changed, so no more children not accompanied by a U.S. citizen can claim this right? There is absolutely room for legal skilled workers, who have the experience to employ in specialist fields? If there is going to be anything like the travesty of the Ronald Reagan/ Ted Kennedy of Immigration Reform and Control act, then we must demand a secure impenetrable wall as in the State of Israel, the Legal Workforce Act and the Birthright Citizenship Bill.
An amendment to the Birthright citizenship law will inevitable save trillions in taxes, and return this money to the legal populace, to our elderly who have been short changed, our homeless and our real low income. This illegal entry into our country will never be slowed, until we enforce the laws.
I DO NOT SEE ANY END TO THIS MADNESS, UNLESS AMERICANS START CONTACTING THOSE THEY ELECTED TO CONGRESS. TO REPEAT THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY FREE FAXES YOU CAN SEND, IF YOU CAN SPARE A MINUTE TO JOIN THE NUMBERSUSA WEBSITE THIS IS A PRO SOVEREIGNTY ORGANIZATION WITH A GROWING MEMBERSHIP OF ORDINARY PEOPLE (LIKE THE TEA PARTY), WHO IS AGGRESSIVE IN STOPPING ANOTHER FRADULENT AMNESTY DECADES AGO.
The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) announced the results of a national survey that found 52 percent of likely voters want illegal aliens to their home countries. Only 33 percent preferred they be given legal status. The results, which were published in a new CIS report, are based on polling conducted by Pulse Opinion Research. “Poll wording matters. Most post-election polls on immigration policy have given the public the false choice of conditional legalization or mass deportations. This poll uses neutral wording that allows us to know the views of the American public,” said Steven Camarota, CIS’ Director of Research. “With border security and the enforcement of immigration laws being a key issue with legislators, the fact that 70 percent of those polled were not confident that immigration law would be enforced if there is legalization and 69 percent believed providing legal status to illegal’s would encourage more illegal immigration is a good indicator of public sentiment.”
Among the findings of the survey:
Of those who want illegal immigrants to return home, 73 percent said that they felt “very strongly” about their view, while just 35 percent of those who support a legalization said they felt very strongly about their view;
One reason the public may prefer that illegal aliens go home is a strong belief that immigration laws have not been enforced — 64 percent said that enforcement of immigration laws has been “too little”, while just 10 percent said that it had been too much, and 15 percent said it was “just right”;
When asked why there is a large illegal population, voters overwhelming (71 percent) thought it was because we had not made a real effort to enforce our immigration laws. Only 18 percent said it was because we didn’t allow in enough legal immigrants;
About two-thirds of voters (69 percent) agreed with the statement that “giving legal status to illegal immigrants does not solve the problem because rewarding law breaking will only encourage more illegal immigration.” Just 26 percent disagreed;
Only 27 percent of voters expressed confidence that immigration laws would be enforced in the event of a legalization, while 70 percent said they were not confident that laws would be enforced; and
53 percent said they would be more likely to support a political party that supports immigration law enforcement while 32 percent indicated that they would be more likely to support a party that supports legalization.
You lost me at Rasmussen because, you know, they did such a smash bang job during the election.
Of course the GOP doesn't like it: the bully pulpit is effective!!! Democrats love it!
Note to GOP: if you want less spending, then quit passing legislation that spends. Sheesh. Don't take it out on me, social security, medicare, medicaid, etc....
I will eat my hat if this ever happens.
1. A so-called GOP leader says out loud that President Obama has reduced the deficit
2. A so-called GOP leader admits that the GOP is responsible for a significant amount of the deficit that they're so upset about. Not only 2 wars, but 2 long wars and all of the payouts to veterans that are due.
Note to GOP: if you want less spending, then quit passing legislation that spends. Sheesh.
OK...we all know it's Congress that "passes legislation that spends"
So:
Democrats controlled BOTH Houses of Congress 2006-2010
Democrats in Oval Office and majority in BOTH Houses of Congress 2009 - 2010
Democrats in Oval Office and majority in Senate 2010-Present
GOP spending? Sheesh
Why is McCain out talking to the media about Obama being out talking to the people? Shouldn't McCain be governing?
