We talked Friday about Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) affinity for McCarthyism, including allegations he made at a far-right event in 2010, when he argued that Harvard Law School harbored 12 secret communists -- each of whom supported "overthrowing the United States government" -- on its faculty during his time as a student there.
As the story gained attention, the Republican senator's office felt compelled to respond. So, Cruz aides contacted a website created by Glenn Beck -- I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried -- to explain that Cruz was correct and communists really did enjoy a role on the Harvard Law School faculty.
His spokeswoman Catherine Frazier told The Blaze website that the "substantive point" in Cruz's charge, made in a speech in 2010, was "was absolutely correct."
She went on to explain that "the Harvard Law School faculty included numerous self-described proponents of 'critical legal studies' -- a school of thought explicitly derived from Marxism -- and they far outnumbered Republicans."
For those who still care about reality, it's worth noting that some scholars can embrace critical legal studies without actually being a communist intent on, in Cruz's words, "overthrowing the United States government."
In an amusing twist, the senator's office also said it was "curious" that Jane Mayer's New Yorker piece noted remarks Cruz delivered way back in 2010.
Why is that amusing? Because Cruz, as part of his smear campaign against Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel, has said Hagel's previous speeches are of critical importance -- includes remarks delivered before 2010.

This yutz is as "Hispanic" as John Cornyn. But he does have McCarthy's Boozer Noze.
His father is Cuban-American and his mother is white, as is his wife. He grew up in Canada.
It took his father 48 years to become a citizen, only when it was apparent the Ted was destined for politics did his father become a citizen.
When Eisenhower was President, Lyndon Johnson was senior Senator from Texas. Johnson was smart enough as a politician to cater to big oil and the right wing in state politics to get elected, but when he became President he signed into law: Medicare, the voting rights act, the Great Society and other very liberal programs. If he had not gotten us deeper into the Vietnam mess, he might have been considered a great president.
Wow, cuckoo for cocoa puffs!
That Cruz defense is so sophomoric and lame. Dick Cheney supports equal rights for gays so does that make him a Communist? It doesn't look to me like Cruz is not ready for primetime just as Glenn Beck was found lacking and pushed off the center stage.
Never mind - problem fixed.

"To the outside observer there is nothing particularly striking...there is no fire, no perceptible fanaticism, and curiously no oratorical powers. Words come more easily...than sentences, which is normal; but even words fall grudgingly from his lips--his eyes, meanwhile have all the dispassionate intensity of a lion who is having his own private troubles gnawing a juicless knuckle. His voice is plaintive by nature, and trembles obediently when a particularly emotional tone is ordered by the brain. On other occasions, it tries the elusive intonations of sarcasm, sounding much like a car with a dying battery, and even attempts the major key of jocularity when bonhomie is called for, but it is a sad laugh, and one which does not invite participation...His own lack of wit makes him impervious to the wit of others; his own inability to listen makes him immune to argument; his own tortuous train of thought wears down the opposition; his...often muddled delivery force(s) quicker minds to function at a disadvantage below their normal speeds...
Whenever...compelled to admit that he doesn't know, he does so with an inflection suggesting that it isn't worth knowing. Whenever he says he does know, he does so with an inflection suggesting that others don't--and won't. This then...is the face of man who recognizes his potential enemy in everyone he meets. Like a water diviner, he treads the desert with a homemade rod and shouts his triumph with every flicker of the instrument, leaving hardworking...men to scratch the soil for evidence. No one who has enjoyed an argument, no one who has ever entertained a challenging doubt, no one who relishes an unfettered view of history and the current scene could possibly be a communist. But anti-communism is no creed--democracy is no creed--it is a vehicle for the enjoyment of freedom, for the ventilation of thought, for the excercise of mutual respect, even in opposition. This is the heritage which is traditionally so near the heart of this immense republic, and for which so many of her sons have died. When anit-communism attempts to become a creed, it fights with the arms of its enemy, and like its enemy, it breeds injustice, fear, corruption. It casts away the true platform of democracy, and the destroys the sense of moral superiority without which no ethical struggle is ever won...
Sir Peter Ustinov, BBC commentary on Senator Joseph McCarthy, not certain of the daste, quoted from his autobiography, "Dear Me."
any typos are mine...
Man...you're a really informed dude! I think you like to hear yourself talk.
Tail Gunner Ted is doomed to crash and burn.
Thank you Texas for this steaming pile of dog s***.
Can't you just see a Harvard professor human resources recruiting: "We have competitive benefits and compensation; Communists encouraged to apply."
This is another example of the American right practicing the opposite of what they preach.
McCarthyism has long been a cautionary tale about big government threatening individual freedom. It was an era when the US government shredded the First Amendment by reaching into people's homes, businesses, schools, houses of worship and, if it caught them expressing unsanctioned opinions, hauling them before a government inquisition and destroying their career. It was the closest the US has come to an Orwellian big brother state.
The Tea Party are people who claim to be First Amendment purists and enemies government power, who scream "big brother" when the First Lady suggests that people may want to consider the possibility that it would be in their best interest to eat healthy foods. For this group to embrace McCarthyism is demented. It shows a complete separation from reality.
In the 1950s, McCarthy claimed to support American values, but actually moved America closer to the Communist-style oppression he was supposed to be fighting.
Today, Rick Snyder in Michigan claims that government is the problem and that empowering the people is the solution, yet he has abolished local democracy and replaced it with government appointed dictators.
And in the midst of this, the freedom-cheering Tea Party has decided to re-embrace McCarthyism.
How do we finally make the American people understand that actions speak louder than words?
As I have long suspected people like Ted Cruz always hire staff that have less going on intellectually than themselves. In Cruz's case this is really hard, while Cruz is indeed educated he is one of the most ignorant sentators........well since Rand Paul was elected 2 years ago.
I'll never understand how someone like this gets into a political office. I keep wondering what the tea parties real agenda is. Maybe it's just conspiracy theory but it feels like there's more going on then meets the ears. These people scare me. Can't we do something to keep these nut cases out?
When will politicians learn that instant news and social media will be their downfall. They are so stupid.
I'm really sick of seeing cruz's face plastered all over the place. He looks like he has a mask of makeup on - a clown or a kabuki player - scary.
After reading all of the above comments, my bottom line is this, Sen. Ted Cruz is about as sharp as a marble.
The term "critical legal studies" actually means nothing. It's a meaningless term. "Critical studies" can be applied to ANYTHING, certainly not just law. How critical they actually are, or whether they prompt critical dissection or thinking, is subjective, of course, and open to accusations of self-promotion and exaggeration, but that's all.
And Harvard Law had to call the course SOMETHING, didn't they?
Here is an example of an online library catalog critical studies:
Critical Studies ...
in American art
in antebellum sectionalism
in Arnold, Emerson & Newman
in black life & culture
in educational theory
in Irish literature
in native history
in Cynewulf group
history & thoery of art
in history of anthropology
of key texts
of Sir Gawain & the Green Knight
of the works of Charles Dickens
All it means that these subjects are examined. Nothing more. Ted Cruz is an idiot. He ruins the dignity of the Senate
Ted Cruz, my senator, whom I always refer to Sen Cur Dog. I own a TX ranch, and a cur dog is considered a dirty low-down stinking, no good worthless critter. Many decent honorable Texans are deeply embarrassed and appalled at Sen Cur Dog's disgusting behavior.
vlyons,
I understand your embarrassment. Here in Wisconsin we have Ron Johnson!
Your comments are laughable...no wonder the wussy Obama got reelected with mentally diminished idiots like this getting to vote. Cruz is awesome!!!
