Abortion and contraception render this system of social control obsolete and unworkable, but the underlying theological tenet, that unsanctioned sex is shameful and evil, is still very alive.

Politicians who want to force their theology on everybody else have found various ways to shame women who have religiously unsanctioned sex and want to avoid the traditional method of stigmatization, the baby. The problem is, fanatics in the electorate elect them specifically to do this, and they are often able to summon enough superficial medical support to survive court challenges.
