Today's edition of quick hits:
* It's official: the Senate confirmed Chuck Hagel as the nation's new Defense Secretary. The final vote was 58 to 41. Every Republican but four -- Thad Cochran, Rand Paul, Mike Johanns, and Richard Shelby -- voted in opposition to the nomination.
* President Obama spoke at Newport News Shipbuilding today in the hopes that public pressure will lead congressional Republicans to be more responsible before sequestration cuts kick in. The overhaul of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, which is currently docked nearby, has been put on hold due to GOP antics, reinforcing the real-world impact of the Republicans' tactics.
* Israel: "Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday fired a rocket into Israel for the first time since a cease-fire reached three months ago ended an Israeli offensive against the militant Islamist group Hamas, police said."
* More cabinet: "The Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday approved President Barack Obama's choice of Jacob Lew to be Treasury secretary and sent the nomination to the full Senate."
* Supreme Court: "In a 5-to-4 decision that broke along ideological lines, the Supreme Court on Tuesday turned back a challenge to a federal law that authorized intercepting international communications involving Americans."
* Italy: "Markets dropped and Italians awoke on Tuesday to headlines screaming 'Ungovernability' and 'Hung Parliament' a day after national elections to replace the technocratic government of caretaker Prime Minister Mario Monti failed to produce a majority capable of governing the third-largest economy among those using the euro currency."
* Oh to be a fly on the wall: "President Barack Obama will meet Tuesday at the White House with Republican Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina to discuss immigration changes, a White House official said."
* And all of sudden, the right loves Bob Woodward. That Bob Woodward made obvious errors, which he has not corrected, doesn't seem to bother conservatives in the slightest.
Anything to add? Consider this an open thread.

"In a 5-to-4 decision that broke along ideological lines, the Supreme Court on Tuesday turned back a challenge to a federal law that authorized intercepting international communications involving Americans."
Hell, so what! The NSA is already intercepting all of our communications within the U.S. Do you really thing that the NSA is duplicating all of the major phone & internet communications and awaiting 'court ordered warrants' before viewing them?
That Bob Woodward made obvious errors, which he has not corrected, doesn't seem to bother conservatives in the slightest.
Again, attacking the n!gger president using 'obvious errors' (and outright lies) is a feature not a bug to the repukes.
You need to dial it down about 50%, SOV. You are waaaaaaay out of line here, and I hate being the one who was offended by this.
Tc- I find it amazing that anything could offend you. Oops, sorry- bad things about Obama would offend you.
More petulant self-pity from the troll. Same easy question again: Were the states that made up the "Confederate States of America" justified in seceding? It is a very easy yes or no question.
Hung parliament? Ungovernability? Monti failed to win (he placed fourth)? Berlusconi was close to win? Grillo (the bearded populist with a blog and the traditional "@!$%# them all" message) has the largest single party in parliament (in terms of votes)? Well, this means early elections, possibly in May. After electing a new president of the Republic and changing the electoral system. However, at the basis of anything, do not expect Monti to get back to power...
Of course the right suddenly loves Bob Woodward. It is obvious to all that for whatever reason he holds the President in low regard. He has also adopted the Republican meme concerning the manufactured sequestration crisis.
Does latching on to credit for Carl Bernstein's work 40 years ago provide justification for talking out his @ss since then?
Not sure the right really 'loves' Woodward. More like 'the enemy of my enemy is my friend'.
Yeah, lots of libs are speaking negatively about Obama. Heck, even Bill Maher is calling him the "patronized-in-chief". Msnbc is still the one safe source where Obama would never do wrong...
Those on the right continue to show that they love to lie.
I wouldn't exactly classify Maher to be on the Right...
A lame version of the Peewee Herman defense. You got nothin', troll.
Here's that simple yes or no question, again: Were the states that made up the "Confederate States of America" justified in seceding?
From the Wall Street Journal, on the Hagel confirmation:
Yes, Senator Inhofe. We know that. That's the freaking problem!
Also, Rand Paul? WTF? Apparently, he's willing to join his party in trying to stop a vote and halt any progress by the government, but he's at least honest enough that once delays are off the table, he'll vote yes since it no longer matters towards their agenda of obstruction?
These Reps. and Senators need to stop thinking this super majority crap is "normal". It isn't normal, it's for certain extreme things. But extremism and continuous crisis is not normal, either.
Another day
Another Notch on the Liar In Chief
Todd, on the Monday, February 25 Daily Rundown on MSNBC:
Cool story, Bro, tell it again!
McCain supporter ("Keating Five")and savings and loan villain Charles Keating:
Keating said, "One question, among many raised in recent weeks, had to do with whether my financial support in any way influenced several political figures to take up my cause. I want to say in the most forceful way I can: I certainly hope so."
I'm so shocked.
George, it does appear that Obama has the same spirit as McCain., doesn't it.
No it doesn't, troll, but you already knew that, didn't you.
Actually, Rusty, it would be more accurate to say that I find it odd that this is somehow an issue, even a manufactured one. This is another clear example of a convenient double standard.
LOL- I love it when someone points to Obama's hypocrisy and the Left defends it by equating it with something the other side did as well. Defending Obama by saying he did just what his opposition did. You have to admit that is funny! Then to watch them get angry and try to justify their defense.
No, troll, you love spreading malicious misinformation.
Not hypocritical, but not naive, either. Until
until then, political candidates will need to raise gobs of money. Some will do it more ethically than others.
McCain was corrupt. No, I'm sorry, he "exhibited poor judgment." That's the double standard. Where's Obamagate? Solyndra? Even Romney admits not all investments work out the way you'd like. And Obama has yet to crash the banking system. Oh, right, that was already done before he got here.
Not angry, either. Not LOL, either. Not defending, either. Just saying...facts.
I guess we should outlaw corporations and unions from giving political money. But, so long as Obama is ba by his supporters when he sells influence... Seems the only liberal media to have a problem with this is the NYTimes.
Woodward continues to confirm who was the opportunistic hack and who was the actual journalist, back in the Watergate days.
I am sure that Senators McCain & Graham will show President Obama all the courtesy they usually do. <snark>
IF YOU HAVE TO GET RESPECT TO GET RESPECT BACK
President Obama should learn that!!!
Coherence is preferable to incoherence. Hope this helps.
On a regular basis, there's no shortage of criticism directed at Fox News for being consistently and unfairly biased. But Baltimore Sun media criticDavid Zurawik argues that MSNBC, having hired ex-Obama advisers David Axelrod and Robert Gibbs, is worse.
MSNBC's Axelrod And Gibbs Deny 'Pro-Obama' Allegations, Claim Mantle Of 'Independent' Analysis
The network is now "all but a bona fide organ of state propaganda," he writes, asserting that it is in step with the government's voice, aiding in masking its activities. In making his point, Zurawik looked to a segment on Andrea Mitchell's show in which Axelrod joined in to talk about the sequester.
"There is a belief among some Republicans in Congress that maybe this sequester's all right," Axelrod said on the show. "Maybe this is another way of shrinking government in a dramatic way. That's a dangerous idea, but it's not uncommon in some quarters on Capitol Hill."
Which begs the question: "What is this if not exactly the spin Team Obama seemed to be working on all week?" While the president doesn't seem to be willing to sit down for many substantial interviews, he notes, we're still getting his message loud and clear — through MSNBC, the "so-called news channel."
It's "same kind of oppositional attack-dog stuff" they did when they worked for Obama. Despite their own insistence that's not the case: As you might recall, Gibbs told Howard Kurtz, of his new role, "I don't see it either as being a cheerleader for the president or as a spokesman for the administration's point of view." Axelrod offered a similar view.
Zurawik readily dismisses this argument: They're both on network that "serves as TV mouthpiece for the White House."
Eyesight fading?
Doug,
The main problem is that any ethical sense he may have had faded a long time ago.
At least the majority of the post is coherent.
Unlike the previous post at #7.1
Ex-UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, today defended the war in Iraq:
The lives of tens of thousands of Iraqis, and thousands of troops aside, I have often wondered how much the war fanned al-Qaida's flames and garnered support for its cause from Muslims around the world, united in taking a stand against 'western interference'.
Not to mention the tremendous boost provided to Iran's stature in the region.
Did he indicate, in any shape or form, his thoughts regarding the WMD "lie" about going to war.
Vincent, you can read the full article here.
He adds:
He talks about how complex the decision was saying,
I wonder whether his comment about Iran is based on supposition or actual intelligence.
The leader of the UK Liberal Democrat party at the time of the invasion, Menzies Campbell, is also quoted in the article, saying about Tony Blair:
Word.
Thank you so very much, I am troubled!
I am sort of surprised at the near warp speed that people are changing their minds about marriage equality.
Even Republicans have formed a cadre to publicly support it. I have wondered why there would be any kind of conservative preference for people remaining single and/or secretly cheating on a trophy spouse in a pretend life.
Meg Whitman ran for CA Gov. in support of Prop. 8. Now she has seen the light. Mean time people in CA wait, think about trips to WA to marry there.
I still wouldn't vote for Meg Whitman or Repubs, but I am appreciative of the support and anxious to file our taxes as Married, filing jointly next year.
It's happening pretty fast now, after decades of slow boiling opposition with too much pain and death.
Black Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Harry C. Alford toldNational Press Club that he "ignored" President Obama's "spread the wealth" comment in 2008 and "had hopes" for him "because he was black."
"I don't really support him too well and he knows it and that's a badge of honor. He's bad. He's bad and I supported him. I voted for him the first time around. I had hopes because he was black. Shame on me," Alford told TheDC at the National Press Club after an anti-gun control news conference.
"Then when he started doing all these executive orders, banning right-to-work and other things, hurting my members, my constituents. I had to back off. I had to represent my people."
While running for president in 2008, Obama said, "I think when you spread the wealth around, it's good for everybody."
When reminded Obama's comment, Alford said, "I kind of ignored it. I said, 'well, maybe he's just talking.' He was serious. He was real serious and it is truly — if you read the Communist Manifesto — that's that philosophy. He is not Adam Smith. He does not believe in capitalism the way American, our Founding Fathers did. He is very social and it's getting borderline communist."
The National Black Chamber of Commerce is "dedicated to economically empowering and sustaining African American communities through entrepreneurship and capitalistic activity within the United States."
You didn't bother to name your sourse that you quoted verbatim....

a fake noise opinion....LOL
Thankful, if you decide to invalidate anything Fox puts up, you have also decided to ignore the only media outlet willing to criticize Obama. Will ignorance be bliss?
Once again, The Blank shoots and misses!
I like your show and agreed to your opinion but I have to let you know that for my future generation-- I would like to see them operate a drone than have them operate a machine gun.
The Bank of England is considering a negative interest scheme for retail banks. The idea is to encourage them to lend funds to small businesses, as they're failing to do so at the levels the BofE would like to see. If the BofE were to charge retail banks interest for any funds deposited with it, it would be more cost-effective for them to lend money than deposit it.
It would be interesting to see if the BofE and other EU Federal banks try this out, and if they do, whether it acts as the economic stimulus they hope.
