In a few short months, the bugs in the design of a 3D printed high capacity magazine were worked out, bringing the possibility of homemade firearms from fairy tale to reality. Anyone concerned about the gaping hole this puts in any new gun safety legislation understands that this is not really a Cinderella story. More like

GAH!! Sorry I keep forgetting to turn off the comments. :(

Hopefully we will not go through a national emergency. We had neighbors in the civil war that went in and killed people for their food (hogs, pigs or chickens). Vigilance..
So the argument for not doing anything to moderate gun violence is "The decline of western Civilization"?
I don't think we are quite that far gone yet
I suspect that 3-D printing would more likely be used to create gun magazines. After all, magazines are nothing more than a case, a spring, and a plate.
Prints harming?
I think you're supposed to use the special thread for your answer. This ruins it for others still working on the answer.
This is not a big deal. Guns can already be built by any number of methods, including CNC milling machines that are not too much more money then these 3d printers, AND the mills use metal. They make real guns by downloading plans off the internet.
They make pump action shotguns in third world countries with very basic tools. So as Rachel says, this is about politics, not some grand technology change. People can make slap shotguns in ten minutes with pipe available in almost any hardware store. Or a sub machinegun with a few more parts.
There are already guns that regular people are not allowed to have. Gun nuts act like this is the thin edge of the wedge, or the start of a slippery slope. But they don't freak out because they can't own a 1.5" shotgun. They are banned. The world didn't end, and they government didn't swoop down with black UN helicopters.
It's time for the adults in the country to have a reasoned conversation. Everyone else can go to their rooms.
