Monday's interview with Montgomery, Alabama Police Chief Kevin Murphy about his apology to Rep. John Lewis for his predecessors not having done anything to protect the Freedom Riders from racist violence included in the introduction a map of the Freedom Rides of 1961, with notations for where they encountered violence and arrests.
The map comes from the online collection of David Frankhauser, a professor of biology at the University of Cincinnati's Clermont College who was an active participant in the Civil Rights movement. The page containing his recollections and documentation of the movement is pretty amazing.

I think instead of 1916 the text should read 1961.
Seems like just yesterday. No, that was voter I.D. , the Acorn flap, the gerrymadering and the challenge to the VRA.
We've come a long way haven't we?
Fixed.
Note that the 'snow bird route' from New York to Florida was violence free.
Wouldn't want to scare the Yankee tourists, after all.
Don't know 'bout the Northen part of the route but down here anything that breaks the monotony is appreciated. Besides we got plenty of game to shoot at without wasting ammo on dreamers.

Great post. My WASP parents had a hair-raising anecdote about taking infant me to meet my southern relatives in Alabama in the fall of 1962. Due to their northern license plates, they ran a gauntlet of traffic stops by various police and sheriff's deputies trying to catch "northern agitators".
