We talked yesterday about House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), who briefly endorsed universal background checks on firearm purchases, before remembering that he actually believes the opposite. It turns out, as Rachel noted on the show last night, he's not the only forgetful Ohio Republican.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) was asked in an interview about his views on marriage equality. The Republican, predictably, said he opposes allowing same-sex couples to get married, but supports civil unions.
"You know, if people want to have civil unions and have some way to transfer their resources, I'm for that. I just think marriage is between a man and woman. But if you want to have a civil union, that's fine with me."
It fell to the governor's spokesperson to tell reporters that when Kasich said he's for civil unions, that did not mean he's for civil unions. In fact, the governor's office said, Kasich continues to oppose civil unions, which remain illegal in Ohio, despite what he said in the interview.
Why did the governor say the opposite? His spokesperson added that Kasich was using the words "loosely."
Given how frequently Republicans seem to endorse one position, only to quickly walk it back and adopt the opposite position, Rachel asked a good question last night: "How does the other party -- or country at large -- argue policy with a party that so often does not seem to know what their policy positions are let alone actually believe in them?" Rachel raised the possibility of "post-policy" Republicans.

While I don't disagree with the assessment, I'm reminded of a similar and more highly visible gaffe during Secretary Hagel's senate confirmation process.
However, before anyone takes that comparison too literally, recall that Hagel only made a gaffe regarding administrative policy, whereas Kasich here made a Freudian Slip regarding basic human decency.
All I'm saying is that most all politicians occasionally forget to say what they're told.
Hagel was speaking for himself, then he was reminded that he now had to speak for the administration. It was an understandable mistake because he was just hired days ago. Kasich, on the other hand should have no such confusion, since its HIS administration and HIS policy he is speaking for....unless his administration is actually run by somebody other than Kasich. That is certainly possible.
Repeat after me ...If I tell you the truth I will be primaried by a bunch of bat$hit crazy teatards.
Now tell yourself this in the mirror 5 times before you go on camera.
See Easy Peasy
Forgetful? Come on Steve...this is deliberate obfuscation of the truth...this how they got into office in the first place...Look and listen at what is now coming out of the GOP propaganda machine...there is so much flip flopping going on, we need to call Sarah Palin with her Halibut club to calm things down...
He was for being against gay people before he was against his previously stated position.
Clear?
Their hero Raygun was a master of lying and forgetting and got away with it for eight years. Shrub and his mob continue the lies and forgetting to this day without the deserved consequences. Where is the motivation for the gop to be honest?
GOP: Take a cue from Sarah and write your stance on your hand for reference. Der.
Maybe these people ARE stating what they truly believe and the later reactions are the party lines.
Such as the GOP hates white trucks and Boehner says he likes white trucks. Then his office says he hates them because that's what people from that party believe.
While Boehner really does break with party lines and the party can't believe it so they say he misspoke.
So when the statement of Boehner really hating white trucks comes from others in the party, that is not what Boehner really believes.
No maybe about it. They are saying what they and most Americans truly believe. The problem is their evangelical base. If they don't adhere totally to the evangelical line they will be primaried. No one is more intolerant than an evangelical except members of the Taliban.
Wow! Writing that must have given you a headache! Reminiscent of word salad from another Republican. Good snark!
That is basically my mindset. They are, in fact, capable of perfectly rational thought and answered some questions honestly without considering what their political situation dictates how they should answer and probably walk away from the interview only to be met by one of their staffers who points out that such and such donor is likely to get upset over their answer.
How can you tell the difference?
its amazing to me that so many candidates from the gop need their opinions strained through their aides filters. everyone makes mistakes, but you would think that when you are asked about your opinion on important matters of today, you would at least try to remember what you were told to say. here lies the real problem. most government people realize that in todays world the cameras are following you everywhwere. so you should at least try to remember the talking points. when you make a mistake and say what you really feel, you look dumb, or out of touch, or a non- caring horrible person. or you could be like fox news and not even carry the prez getting a medal from the israelis . wouln't it be refreshing if candidates actually said what they really believed. and they got elected based on their telling the truth. wouldn't that be refreshing!
Who. The. Hell. does this man think he is? Governer is not God.
The IRS needs to audit this man down to his last cent, perhaps then, once invasion of privacy takes place in his own life, he will THEN understand how others feel about his unjustifiable intrusion in theirs. OMG.
All these Neanderthals are quietly praying for the Supreme Court to strike down Prop 8, so they can then call it settled law and try to move on a tiny bit. Of course, as with the ACA, the crazies will continue nonetheless...
Like they did with Roe v. Wade?
One man's maverick is another man's flip-flopper.
Vets concerned about not getting what was promised. Well welcome to reality and the facts of life as they say. Vets complain they cannot get treatment for PTSD. But how many women and children have been affected by domestic abuse, have PTSD from the result of that abuse, and have not got any treatment in their entire lifetime. These women and children have had to suffer through PTSD with no help at all throughout the world and in the end too many of them are considered as outcasts because of it. And how many women, men, and children who have PTSD from these wars in foreign lands that has never and will never get any treatment for PTSD, but are so easily accused of doing wrong. Well make sure you can thank your Republicans, rich bastards, false Pharisees, and other politicians that are so eager to cause another war and have created in effect more suicide bombers for you to fight another senseless war in.
All Republicans seem to like to do is inject confusion so no one knows what they are really up to. And in the end it is all bad for everybody, except for the rich bastards. Evil is always famous for injecting confusion, lies, and deceptions.
The basic problem is that many in the GOP don't 'believe' what they profess to believe. Kasick isn't against gay marriage. He became governor around the time we were having the 'civil union' debate. He just shut his brain after that probably due to the many talking points he has received from the GOP since then. So when he relaxed he gave the 'civil union' response. The REST Of the country has evolved since then to gay marriage. But he can't GO there. There are a couple of GOPpers that actually 'believe' but most of them spew the talking points...and then when the overwhelming majority of voters dispute them, they've ALWAYS thought that it should be that way...honest to GOD. Say what you believe and let the chips fall where they may. Remember the Moral Majority? Yeah well they were slapped down in politics pretty decisively because politicians and voters didn't agree with them. NOW they pander to the evangelicals.
If you think it's hard to figure out what their position is, just watch what they do after they're elected.
"How does the other party -- or country at large -- argue policy with a party that so often does not seem to know what their policy positions are let alone actually believe in them?"
You miss the true point, they don't "debate", they do not compromise, there is no negotiations,
the Right only dictates and we are to submit, period.
Liberals are so silly, the Right states a clear vision, total control over the people, period. And the submissive liberal just keeps asking the question, " whats wrong, why don't they listen to me", and complains the Right doesn't play fair. Well it is, as evidenced by their actions, by their deeds, by history, it is because they DO NOT CARE!!
The Dems have proven to over compromise, and we all pay the price, as the country shifts further to the Corporate Right.
What happens is very simple. Republicans lie so much, they cannot keep track of their lies. On the other hand all they care about is the minority of their base where the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
They have that dreaded Politician Disease - "CRS" (can't remember $h*t)
FREEDOMOHIO STATEMENT ON GOV. JOHN KASICH’S COMMENTS ON MARRIAGE EQUALITY.
-- March 21st 2013.
Ian James, FreedomOhio co-founder, issued the following statement today after reading Gov. John Kasich’s comments(included below) on the civil rights issue of our generation - marriage equality.
“I hope Gov. Kasich understands civil unions are banned by the Ohio Constitution as well and they are a cruel substitute for legal marriage. We need equal rights and family security in Ohio for same-gender couples. That's why more and more Republicans are making the right choice and stepping up to support marriage equality,” James said.
“Our simple, balanced and constitutional, 46-word Freedom to Marry and Religious Freedom Amendment will permit the Governor's gay friends and other loving same-gender couples to get married at the courthouse. At the same time, our amendment respects and protects houses of worship by letting them decide if they wish to perform or not perform, recognize or not recognize, a marriage,” James said.
“Gov. Kasich has close friends and political advisers who are gay. Has he truly listened to them, looked into their eyes and then into his own heart, and asked himself the same type of questions that his fellow Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman pondered about equality, fairness and family?”.
FreedomOhio is the statewide non-profit organization that retained constitutional lawyers to draft the Freedom to Marry and Religious Freedom Amendment for Ohio's State Constitution. The Amendment/Petition has been certified by the OH Atty General, unanimously approved by the OH Ballot Board and survived an OH Supreme Court challenge.
The most recent Washington Post Poll of Ohio voters showed support for marriage equality in the Buckeye State at 52% with opposition at 36%.

Marriage equality is a no brainer, but you can still be fired for being gay in 39 states! How about complete equality?
"Loosely" also describes his ability to tell the truth.
The problem the Republicans have is their first rule is to always lie. After a while they forget which lie they are telling. The solution for anyone with a decent IQ is just never believe anything they say. Good job showing this.
Remember, this is the party of "98% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortions". And "That wasn't intended to be a factual statement."
MSNBC has not reported news on the horrific murder of 8 babies by the abortionist, Dr. Kermit Gosnell. Your show should have covered it . Why are you silent?
